Can't submit appeal on NY unemployment website - tried everything!

Been trying to file an appeal for my denied unemployment claim since November but the website keeps crashing. I lost my construction job in September when the project funding got cut, and filed my claim right away. Got denied in October saying I didn't have enough working hours, which is completely wrong - I worked full time the entire year before getting laid off. I've tried submitting the appeal form at least 15 times now on different browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari), cleared my cache, used my phone, laptop, even borrowed my sister's computer. Every single time, the page freezes when I click submit or gives me an error message saying "system unavailable" or sometimes just a blank screen. Called the helpline 20+ times but can't get through to anyone. The appeal deadline is coming up next week and I'm seriously freaking out. Anyone else having this problem or know how to actually get an appeal submitted? Starting to think they designed it to fail on purpose.

classic nysdol website garbage. their tech is from 1995 i swear. try doing it between 2-4am, thats when I finally got my stuff to go through cuz less people on the site. also try using microsoft edge browser, for some reason that worked better for me.

Thanks for the tip. Never thought about trying at weird hours. Will give Edge a shot too, haven't tried that one yet.

Edge is basically internet explorer with a different hat on. But yah its weird, sometimes it actually works better with gov sites 🤔

After weeks of dealing with the same issue (website errors, endless holds on the phone), I found a service called Claimyr that got me through to an actual human at unemployment. They basically call and wait on hold for you, then connect you when a rep answers. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast - they fixed my appeal issue in minutes once I actually reached someone. Best thing I've tried after wasting so much time. Here's a video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different? sounds like another unemployment 'hack' that never works

I was super skeptical too. The difference is they don't promise to fix your claim - they just get you to a real person so YOU can explain your situation. That's what I needed - just to talk to someone who could override the stupid website errors.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? been trying to reach someone for 3 weeks now 😩

It worked for me! The appeals process is impossible without talking to someone. They just wait on hold so you don't have to. I finally got my backpay sorted after talking to an agent.

So I was about to throw my phone after 3 hours on hold when I saw this. Tried claimyr.com yesterday and got a callback in about 50 min. Agent fixed everything. Just wanted to confirm it actually works.

I had the exact same problem in August! The key is to SAVE after each section before hitting final submit. Also, try using an older version of the form - there should be a PDF version you can download, fill out, and mail in (yes, snail mail 📮). I know it's ancient but they legally have to accept it, and that's what worked for me.

Wait there's a paper version? Do you know where to find it? I'd much rather just mail it in at this point.

https://dol.ny.gov/forms-and-publications then search for "appeal" - should be right there. Print it, fill it out, and send it certified mail so you have proof you submitted before the deadline!

The NY unemployment appeal system is a complete joke rn. I work in IT and their website is running on dinosaur servers that crash anytime more than 10 people use it at once. You have 3 options: 1) Keep hammering that submit button. Sometimes it goes through on the 10th or 20th try even with the error message. 2) Call and try to get a rep to submit the appeal over the phone (good luck getting through though) 3) Find your nearest DOL office and submit in person Option 3 worked for me but took half a day waiting.

Thanks for the ideas. I didn't even know you could submit in person. Might be worth the trip if I can't get anywhere with the website.

I wouldn't bother with the in-person unless you live super close. My cousin went to the office in Brooklyn and they just gave him a computer to use... which had the SAME website issues 🤡

Depends on which office. The one in Albany actually has staff that can take paper forms and enter them into the system with their admin access. But yah some offices are useless.

Same thing happened to me last year. Their appeals system is DESIGNED to fail so they don't have to pay people. The absolute best way is to get a human on the phone who can override the system. I ended up using claimyr.com after 2 weeks of calling nonstop. Their service got me a callback with a live agent and they approved my appeal over the phone. Sometimes talking to a human is the only way through the bureaucracy.

0 coins

THIS!!! 💯 They design these systems to be broken on purpose. It's all part of the plan to deny benefits.

0 coins

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

No catch that I found. They just call and wait on hold so you don't have to. Was able to explain my situation to an actual person who could help instead of fighting with their broken website.

ur not alone, legit EVERYONE is having trouble with the appeals site. My roomate is going through the same nightmare rn. He contacted his state senator's office and they have a special liaison who can help with unemployment issues. They got his appeal submitted within 48 hours. Try reaching out to your local rep!

As someone who previously worked for NY unemployment (quit last year), I can tell you the appeals system is completely overwhelmed. The website issues happen when too many people try to submit at once. Here's what I recommend: - Try submitting between 1-5am when traffic is lowest - Use Internet Explorer (yes, really) or Microsoft Edge - Disable any ad blockers or browser extensions - Make sure your answers are short and don't use special characters - If all else fails, call the appeals unit directly at 518-402-0205 The direct line is rarely published but can get you to the right department faster. If you explain the technical issues, they can take your appeal over the phone. If you're approaching your deadline, document your attempts (screenshots of errors, notes about when you tried) so you can prove you tried to submit on time if they try to deny based on missed deadline. Alternatively, services like claimyr.com can get you connected to a live agent who can take your appeal by phone, which bypasses the broken online system completely.

Thank you so much for this insider info! Taking screenshots is a great idea - didn't think about needing to prove I tried. Will try that direct number tomorrow.

mvp comment right here! that direct number is gold.

you have to use the OLDEST browser u can find. i had to dig up my old laptop with window 7 and used internet explorer. somehow that worked when nothing else did. the ny unemployment site is coded for technology from 2010 i stg

contact ur state assembly person asap! they have special contacts at unemployment and can push appeals through when the website fails. worked for me after 3 weeks of trying on my own. google "[your county] NY state assembly" to find who represents you.

•

I'll try this! Didn't realize they could help with unemployment issues.

Zainab Yusuf

•

they def can! my assemblyman's office has a dedicated person who just handles unemployment problems. they got mine fixed in like 3 days after i spent months trying

0 coins

sounds to me like the site might be blocking your IP address from too many attempts. try using your phone data instead of wifi, or use a vpn to get a new IP. that fixed it for me when i had similar issues.

yo this happened to me last month!!! what worked was clearing ALL my browser data (not just cache but cookies too) and then trying in incognito mode. for some reason the appeal form has issues with saved data.

Yuki Yamamoto

I'll try incognito mode! Haven't thought of that one.

the appeals deadline isn't actually hard and fast. if you can prove you tried to submit before the deadline (screenshots of errors etc) they have to accept it. send everything certified mail to the appeals board with a letter explaining the technical issues and they'll still process it. speaking from experience.

0 coins

have you tried calling the TECHNICAL SUPPORT line instead of the regular unemployment line? 888-209-8124 and then press options for technical assistance. they can sometimes submit the appeal for you if their site isn't working. their regular agents can't help with tech issues.

i swear these sites NEVER WORK when you actually need them to. same thing happened with my UI claim. spent 6 hours trying different browsers just to have it fail at the last step everytime! the dol website is absolute trash 🗑

facts. they prob built it to fail so they dont have to pay people 🤬

100% this. makes me so angry how they treat people who just need help

Call the unemployment office and ask for a "reasonable accommodation" under the ADA. Tell them your disability (anxiety, ADHD, whatever) makes it impossible to use their broken website. They legally have to provide an alternative way to submit your appeal. Worked for me - they took all my info over the phone.

0 coins

Yuki Yamamoto

•

That's a really interesting approach. I do have anxiety that's gotten way worse dealing with this whole situation.

0 coins

Oliver Becker

•

It's your legal right! They hate when you mention ADA because they know they have to comply. Just be prepared to wait on hold forever or use something like claimyr.com to get through.

0 coins

bruh the ny unemployment site is built on windows 95 or something i swear 😂 what worked for me was filling out the form in ALL CAPS (weird but true) and keeping all answers super short. anytime i wrote paragraphs it would crash.

Fax it. Seriously. Find a fax service online (there are free ones) and fax your appeal letter to 518-402-6208. Old school but they legally have to process it and it bypasses their trash website completely.

Yuki Yamamoto

•

Is this the official appeals fax number? Where did you find it?

0 coins

yep it's on their appeals paperwork but buried in the fine print. I had to call like 50 times to confirm it was still active but it is. Just make sure to include your full name, SSN last 4 digits, claim ID if you have it, and why youre appealing.

Bro I literally had to drive to my local library and use their computer to submit my appeal. Something about their public network worked when nothing else would. Might be worth a shot if you're desperate.

sounds to me like u need to talk to a live agent ASAP before your deadline hits. I was in the same boat last month - website kept crashing, phone lines always busy. I finally used claimyr.com and got connected to a rep who submitted my appeal over the phone. Saved my claim and got all my backpay. worth every penny vs losing all those benefits.

sounds like one of those ads that pops up everywhere. anyone ACTUALLY try this?

It's not magic - they just wait on hold for you. But yeah it works. After 2 weeks of trying to get through myself and getting nowhere, I got a callback in about an hour. Rep fixed everything that the website couldn't.

another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol

Not trying to sound like a commercial but I used it too when my account got locked. It's literally just a service that waits on hold so you don't have to. My issue got resolved in one call after weeks of frustration.
