Can you get Washington ESD unemployment if you are on social security benefits?
I'm 63 years old and currently receiving social security retirement benefits. I was working part-time at a retail job for the past two years to supplement my income, but got laid off last month due to store closure. My question is - can I still file for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD while collecting social security? I've heard conflicting information and don't want to mess anything up with either program. Has anyone been in this situation before?

Yes you can collect both! I'm 65 and have been getting social security for 3 years. When I got laid off from my part time job last year I was able to get unemployment too. Washington ESD doesn't count your social security as disqualifying income.

•That's such a relief to hear! Did you have any issues when you filed your initial claim?

•Nope, the application process was pretty straightforward. Just make sure you report your work history accurately.

The key thing to understand is that Washington ESD looks at your work history and wages earned from employment, not other types of income like social security. As long as you meet the base year wage requirements and were laid off through no fault of your own, you should qualify. You'll still need to do your weekly claims and job search requirements though.

•Good to know about the job search requirements. At my age I'm wondering if they have any different expectations?

•The job search requirements are the same regardless of age - you need to make at least 3 job contacts per week and keep a log of your activities.

I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD when I needed to ask about this same situation. Their phone lines are always busy and I kept getting disconnected. Finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Made the whole process so much easier.

•Never heard of that service before. Is it legit? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks about my claim.

•Yeah it's totally legitimate. They just help you get through the phone queue instead of having to redial constantly. Saved me hours of frustration.

wait so theres no reduction in unemployment benefits because of social security?? that doesnt sound right to me

•No reduction from Washington ESD side. Social security might have different rules but unemployment benefits are based on your work wages only.

•I think there might be some impact on the social security side if you earn too much, but that's between you and SSA not Washington ESD.

I'm in a similar boat - 61 and just started collecting early social security last year. Been working part time since then but worried about what happens if I lose my job. This thread is really helpful! One question though - do you have to report your unemployment benefits to social security?

Lara Woods
•Yes you should report any income changes to SSA. Unemployment benefits might be considered income for their purposes but I'm not 100% sure on that part.

•Thanks, I'll make sure to check with them directly about reporting requirements.

Update: I went ahead and filed my claim online through the Washington ESD website. The process was pretty straightforward and I didn't see anywhere that asked about social security benefits. Fingers crossed it goes through without issues!

•Good for you! Make sure to file your weekly claims on time and start your job search activities right away.

This is so confusing to me. I thought once you start social security you can't get any other government benefits??

Adrian Hughes
•That's a common misconception. Unemployment insurance is different from welfare programs - you paid into it through your work history just like social security.

•Oh that makes sense when you put it that way. Thanks for clarifying!

The Washington ESD customer service is absolutely terrible. I've been trying to get through for my own claim issues and literally spent 6 hours on hold yesterday before getting disconnected. How is this acceptable??

•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. Couldn't deal with the endless hold times and dropped calls anymore.

•I might have to look into that. This is driving me crazy.

My neighbor is 67 and collects both social security and unemployment when she gets laid off from her seasonal job every winter. Been doing it for years with no problems. Don't overthink it!

•That's reassuring to hear! Sounds like it's more common than I thought.

I work in HR and deal with this question a lot. From the employer perspective, we treat employees on social security the same as any other employee for unemployment purposes. Age and social security status don't factor into UI eligibility determination.

•Thanks for the professional perspective! It's good to hear from someone who deals with this regularly.

•Happy to help. The key is just meeting the standard work history and wage requirements that apply to everyone.

Does anyone know if there are special job search requirements for older workers? I'm 59 and wondering what I'll need to do if I have to file for unemployment.

•The job search requirements are the same for everyone. Age discrimination in hiring is a separate issue but Washington ESD requirements don't change based on age.

•Good to know, thanks. I was hoping maybe there were some accommodations for older job seekers.

Just wanted to add that you should probably check with a tax professional about how unemployment benefits might affect your taxes, especially if you're also getting social security. The combination might push you into a higher bracket.

•That's a really good point I hadn't considered. I'll make sure to talk to my tax guy about that.

Been there done that! Collected both for about 8 months after my company downsized. No issues whatsoever with Washington ESD. The weekly certification process is the same as for anyone else.

•How did you handle the job search requirements at your age? Was it challenging?

Evelyn Rivera
•It was definitely tougher than when I was younger, but I just focused on applying to positions that were realistic matches for my experience.

I think there might be some earnings limits though? Like if you make too much from unemployment it could affect your social security?

•That's more of a social security administration issue than a Washington ESD issue. You'd need to check with SSA about their earnings test rules.

The system is so complicated! Why can't they just make this stuff clearer? I'm 62 and terrified of messing something up if I lose my job.

•I understand the anxiety, but really the Washington ESD side is pretty straightforward. Focus on meeting their basic eligibility requirements and you should be fine.

•Thanks, I'll try not to worry so much about it.

Final update from OP: My claim was approved! Got my first payment this week with no issues. Thanks everyone for the encouragement and advice. For anyone else in this situation, don't let age or social security stop you from filing if you're eligible.

I had to use that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Really helped me get through to someone who could explain what was holding things up. Wish I had known about it sooner.

•How much does that service cost? I might need something like that for my claim issues.
