Can you file unemployment claims online through Washington ESD website?
I'm trying to figure out if I can file my unemployment claim entirely online or if I need to call Washington ESD. I lost my job last week and want to get this started but I'm not sure about the process. Is it possible to file everything through their website? I've heard mixed things about whether you can file unemployment claims completely online in Washington state.

Yes, you can absolutely file your initial unemployment claim online through the Washington ESD website at esd.wa.gov. The online application is actually the preferred method and it's available 24/7. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license or state ID, and employment history for the past 18 months including employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation.

•That's a relief! Do I need to have all my pay stubs or can I estimate the wages?

•You can estimate if you don't have exact figures, but try to be as accurate as possible. Washington ESD will verify your wages with your employers anyway.

Just to add - after you file your initial claim online, you'll still need to file weekly claims every week to get paid. That's also done online through your eServices account. Make sure you file your weekly claims even if your initial claim is still being processed.

•Good to know about the weekly claims. How long does it usually take for the initial claim to be approved?

•It varies, but typically 2-3 weeks if there are no issues. Sometimes it can take longer if your claim goes into adjudication.

I had trouble with my claim getting stuck in adjudication for weeks. If you run into issues where you can't reach anyone at Washington ESD by phone, I found this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to an agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. It was a lifesaver when I couldn't get through on my own.

•How does that work exactly? Do they call for you or something?

•They help you get connected to an actual Washington ESD agent when the lines are busy. Way better than sitting on hold for hours or getting disconnected.

yeah i filed online last month, pretty straightforward but make sure you have all your info ready before you start because it times out if you take too long

•How long do you have before it times out?

•i think like 20 minutes or something, just have your employment history written down beforehand

One thing to be aware of - you need to register with WorkSource Washington as part of the requirements. You can do that online too but it's a separate system. Don't skip this step or it could delay your benefits.

•Is that required right away or can I do it after filing my claim?

•You should do it within the first few weeks of filing your claim. They'll send you information about the job search requirements.

•I didn't know about WorkSource registration and it held up my benefits for a week. Definitely don't skip it.

The Washington ESD online system is actually pretty user-friendly compared to some other states. Just make sure you answer all the questions honestly, especially about why you lost your job. If you were fired, they might need to do an investigation.

•I was laid off due to company downsizing, so hopefully that's straightforward.

•Layoffs are usually processed quickly since it's not a misconduct issue. You should be fine.

Just went through this process myself. One tip - screenshot or write down your confirmation number after you submit. You'll need it if you have to call Washington ESD about your claim status.

•Great tip, I'll make sure to save that confirmation number.

•That's exactly why I used Claimyr when I needed to talk to someone. Saved me so much frustration trying to call on my own.

Make sure you file your claim as soon as possible after losing your job. There's a waiting week in Washington but the sooner you file, the sooner that week starts counting. Benefits are retroactive to when you filed, not when you lost your job.

•Good point, I'll file today then. Better to get it started right away.

•Exactly. Even if you're missing some information, you can always provide it later. Don't delay filing.

The website is usually pretty reliable but sometimes it has maintenance windows. If you can't access it, try again later rather than assuming there's a problem with your claim.

•I'll keep that in mind. Is there a particular time of day that's better for accessing the site?

•Early morning or late evening tend to be less busy. Avoid Monday mornings if possible.

i made the mistake of waiting two weeks after getting laid off before filing. cost me money because benefits only go back to when you actually file your claim. file as soon as you can!

•Ouch, that's expensive lesson. Thanks for the warning!

Something else to remember - if you have any severance pay or vacation payout, that might affect when your benefits start. Washington ESD will ask about this during the application process.

•I do have some vacation pay coming. Will that delay my benefits?

•It might push back the start date depending on how much it is. Be honest about it on your application and they'll calculate it properly.

The hardest part isn't filing the initial claim, it's dealing with any issues that come up later. That's when you really need to be able to reach someone at Washington ESD, which is nearly impossible through normal channels.

•This is so true. I had an issue with my employer disputing my claim and couldn't get through to anyone for weeks. Finally used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and got it resolved in two days.

•I should have known about that when I was going through my appeal process. Spent hours on hold for nothing.

Pro tip: create your eServices account before you actually need to file. That way if there are any issues with account creation, you can resolve them without being under pressure to file your claim.

•That's smart thinking ahead. I'll set that up first.

Overall the Washington ESD online system is pretty decent. Just be patient with the process and make sure you keep filing your weekly claims on time. Missing a week can cause delays in payments.

One last thing - keep records of everything. Screenshot your weekly claims, save confirmation emails, keep track of your job search activities. If there's ever a problem, having documentation will save you headaches.
