Can I get unemployment benefits in Washington - what are the basic requirements?
I'm thinking about applying for unemployment benefits but I'm not sure if I qualify. I worked at a restaurant for about 8 months before they laid me off last week due to slow business. I made around $28,000 last year. Can I get unemployment in Washington? What are the basic requirements I need to meet? I've never filed for UI before so I'm not sure where to start or what documentation I need.

Yes, you can likely qualify for Washington ESD unemployment benefits. The basic requirements are: you must have earned wages in Washington during your base period (usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters), you must be unemployed through no fault of your own, and you must be able and available for work. Since you were laid off and worked 8 months, you should meet these criteria.

•Thank you! What's a base period exactly? And how much do I need to have earned to qualify?

•The base period is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file your claim. For 2025, if you file now, it would be Q1 2024 through Q4 2024. You need to have earned at least $1,320 in your base period with earnings in at least two quarters.

You'll need to file your claim online at esd.wa.gov. Make sure you have your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment information for the last 18 months. The process is pretty straightforward but can take some time to get through all the questions.

•Do I need pay stubs or will they verify my wages automatically?

Ava Martinez
•Washington ESD will verify your wages automatically through employer reports, but it's good to have your pay stubs just in case there are any discrepancies or if they need additional verification.

I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD when I needed to speak with someone about my claim. Their phone lines are always busy. If you run into issues and need to talk to an agent, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•How much does that cost? I'm already broke from being laid off.

•It's worth checking out their site for details. For me it was way better than spending hours trying to get through on my own.

•Thanks for the tip! Hopefully I won't need to call but good to know there's an option.

Just so you know, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to keep getting benefits. And you have to be actively looking for work and keep a log of your job search activities. Washington requires at least 3 job search activities per week.

•What counts as a job search activity? Just applying for jobs?

•Job applications, attending job fairs, networking events, interviewing, creating or updating your resume, and registering with WorkSourceWA all count. Keep detailed records of everything.

the restaurant industry is rough right now, same thing happened to my cousin. she got approved pretty quick since it was a clear layoff situation

•How long did it take for her to start receiving payments?

•i think it was like 2-3 weeks? she didn't have any issues with her claim though

Your weekly benefit amount will be calculated based on your highest earning quarter in your base period. For Washington, the maximum weekly benefit is $1,015 in 2025, but most people get much less. With your income level, you're probably looking at somewhere around $300-400 per week.

•That would actually help a lot with my rent and bills. How long can I collect benefits?

•Regular unemployment benefits last up to 26 weeks in Washington, but you have to keep meeting all the requirements and filing your weekly claims on time.

Make sure you apply ASAP! Benefits don't start until the week you file your claim, so don't wait around. I made that mistake and lost out on a week of benefits.

Sofia Torres
•Good point, I'll file today. Do I need to wait for anything from my employer first?

Yara Sayegh
•Nope, file right away. Washington ESD will contact your employer directly to verify the reason for separation.

The whole system is so confusing. I'm still trying to figure out what adjudication means and why my claim got stuck there for weeks.

Ava Martinez
•Adjudication happens when there's a question about your eligibility that needs to be reviewed. It can be about the reason you left your job, your availability for work, or other eligibility issues.

•Ugh, hopefully that doesn't happen to me. How do you even get help if you get stuck like that?

Miguel Ramos
•That's exactly when Claimyr helped me. I was stuck in adjudication for a month and couldn't get through to anyone at Washington ESD. They got me connected to an agent who explained what was happening.

Don't forget you might owe taxes on your unemployment benefits. They'll ask if you want taxes withheld when you file your claim.

Sofia Torres
•Oh I didn't think about that. Should I have them withhold taxes?

Keisha Johnson
•It's usually a good idea to avoid a surprise tax bill next April. They can withhold 10% for federal taxes.

The restaurant industry has been hit hard everywhere. At least Washington has decent unemployment benefits compared to some states. You should be able to get back on your feet.

•Yeah, I'm hoping to find something better than my last job anyway. Maybe this is a chance to get into a different field.

•That's a great attitude! WorkSourceWA also has free training programs if you want to learn new skills while you're collecting benefits.

I got denied the first time I applied because I made some mistakes on my application. Don't rush through it - read everything carefully and make sure your dates and wages are accurate.

•What kind of mistakes did you make?

•I put the wrong dates for when I worked at one job and mixed up my gross vs net pay. Had to appeal and it took forever to get it sorted out.

Also remember that you need to register with WorkSourceWA within 4 weeks of filing your claim. It's free and they have job search resources that can be really helpful.

•Yes, that's the site. They'll walk you through setting up your profile and you can search for jobs there too.

GOOD LUCK!!! The process can be frustrating but it's worth it. Having that weekly payment coming in really helps when you're between jobs.

One more thing - keep copies of everything you submit and take screenshots of your weekly claims. I had a technical glitch once and almost lost benefits because I couldn't prove I filed on time.

•Great tip! I'll make sure to document everything.

If you do run into problems, don't give up. I know someone who used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and it saved them weeks of frustration trying to reach Washington ESD.

The whole UI system in Washington is actually pretty decent once you get used to it. Just stay on top of your weekly claims and job search requirements.
