Can I draw social security and unemployment at the same time in Washington?
I'm 63 and recently got laid off from my job at Boeing. I've been collecting Social Security benefits for a few months now but I'm wondering if I can also file for unemployment through Washington ESD? I'm still able and willing to work, just can't find anything in my field yet. Has anyone been in this situation before? Will Washington ESD approve my claim if I'm already getting SS benefits?

Yes, you can collect both Social Security and unemployment benefits in Washington state. They're separate programs with different eligibility requirements. As long as you meet the work search requirements and are able and available for work, Washington ESD shouldn't deny your claim just because you receive Social Security.

•That's a relief! Do I need to report my Social Security income when I file my weekly claims?

•You should report all income when filing weekly claims, but Social Security retirement benefits typically don't reduce your unemployment benefits in Washington.

I've been in the exact same boat. Filed for unemployment last year while collecting SS. Washington ESD approved my claim without any issues. Just make sure you're genuinely looking for work and documenting your job search activities.

•How long did it take for your claim to get approved? I'm worried about adjudication delays.

•Mine took about 2 weeks, but that was before all the recent staffing issues at Washington ESD.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD to ask questions about your specific situation, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach anyone at Washington ESD these days.

•I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Got connected to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending my whole day calling.

wait so social security doesnt count as income that reduces your unemployment benefits? that doesnt sound right to me

•Social Security retirement benefits are specifically excluded from the income that reduces unemployment benefits in Washington. It's different from wages or pension income.

•Yeah this is correct. I work at a senior center and we get this question a lot. SS retirement and unemployment can be collected together.

Be careful about the job search requirements though. At 63, Washington ESD still expects you to be actively seeking work. You can't just go through the motions - they do audit job search logs and you could face disqualification if you're not genuinely available for work.

•What exactly do they look for in the job search logs? I've been applying but haven't gotten any responses.

•They want to see genuine job search activities - applications, networking, attending job fairs, etc. Document everything with dates and details.

I'm confused about this whole thing. My dad is on disability and they told him he can't get unemployment. How is Social Security different?

Oliver Schulz
•Social Security Disability (SSDI) is different from Social Security retirement benefits. If you're on disability, you're considered unable to work, which conflicts with unemployment requirements.

•Oh that makes sense. So retirement benefits don't mean you're unable to work, just that you're old enough to collect.

Boeing layoffs have been brutal. I got caught in the same wave last month. Filed for unemployment right away and they approved it even though I'm also collecting my pension. Different income sources have different rules.

•How's the job market looking for us older workers? I'm getting worried about ageism.

•Not gonna lie, it's tough. But there are companies that value experience. Don't give up.

Just to add - make sure you understand the WorkSourceWA requirements too. You might need to register there and complete certain activities depending on your claim type.

•I registered but haven't done much else. What kind of activities are required?

•Usually workshops, career counseling, or skills assessments. Check with your local WorkSource office for specifics.

The Washington ESD website has a whole section about this under 'Working While Claiming Benefits' - it covers all the different income types and how they affect your weekly benefit amount.

•I looked at that page but it's confusing as hell. Half the links don't work and the information seems outdated.

•Yeah their website is pretty bad. That's why calling is usually better if you can get through.

Does anyone know if there's an age limit for unemployment benefits? I'm 65 and wondering if I should even bother applying.

Oliver Schulz
•No age limit in Washington. As long as you meet the other eligibility requirements, age alone won't disqualify you.

•Good to know! I was worried they'd automatically deny older applicants.

I tried calling Washington ESD for weeks about this same question before someone told me about Claimyr. Finally got my answer about Social Security and unemployment - you can definitely collect both. The service was worth it just to avoid the phone tree hell.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already strapped for cash.

•It's reasonable considering the time and frustration it saves. Check out their site for current info - claimyr.com

Just went through this whole process myself. Filed my unemployment claim online and it got approved within a week. The key is being honest about all your income sources and making sure you're really available for work.

Amina Diallo
•That's encouraging! Did they ask for any special documentation about your Social Security benefits?
0 coins
Sean Doyle
•Nope, they just want to know about it when you report income on your weekly claims.

Washington state is pretty generous with unemployment compared to other places. I moved here from Texas and the difference is night and day.

•What's different about it? Just the benefit amounts or the rules too?

Zara Rashid
•Both. Higher benefits and more reasonable eligibility requirements. Plus they don't penalize you for things like Social Security.

One thing to watch out for - if you have any pension income on top of Social Security, that MIGHT affect your unemployment benefits. Pension rules are different from Social Security rules.

•I don't have a pension, just Social Security. Sounds like I should be fine then.

•Yeah, you should be good to go. Social Security retirement is treated differently than most other income sources.

The hardest part isn't the income rules, it's proving you're genuinely looking for work at our age. Washington ESD takes that seriously and will audit your job search if they suspect you're not really trying.

•Any tips for making the job search look legitimate? I am trying but it's discouraging.

•Keep detailed records, apply to realistic positions, and don't just spam applications. Quality over quantity.

I was denied unemployment initially because I checked the wrong box about being available for work. Had to appeal and it took months to get resolved. Make sure you read everything carefully when filing.

•What box did you check wrong? I want to make sure I don't make the same mistake.

•There's a question about limitations on your availability. I said yes thinking about my age, but that's not what they meant.

For what it's worth, I used Claimyr twice - once to ask about Social Security and unemployment, and again when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Both times they got me through to helpful agents who resolved my issues quickly.

•Did you have to wait long to get connected through their service?

•First time was about 15 minutes, second time took maybe 30 minutes. Way better than the hours I spent trying to call directly.

Bottom line - yes you can collect both, but make sure you're meeting all the unemployment requirements. Age discrimination is real but don't let that stop you from claiming benefits you've earned.

•Thanks everyone! I feel much more confident about filing now. Going to submit my application this weekend.

•Good luck! The worst they can do is say no, but based on what you've described, you should be approved.
