ESD has been severely understaffed since the post-pandemic budget cuts in 2024. Their phone system is designed to manage call volume by disconnecting callers when all available agents are busy and queue times exceed 45 minutes. This is frustrating but actually more efficient than keeping people on hold for hours. Your best options are: 1. Call on Wednesday or Thursday between 8:00-8:30am or 3:30-4:00pm (avoid Mondays and Fridays completely) 2. Use the eServices message center for all issues that don't require immediate attention 3. Visit a WorkSource office in person if you have one nearby - they can sometimes help with basic claim issues or at least use their direct lines to connect you 4. Contact your state representative's office if your situation is dire (about to lose housing, utilities being cut off, etc.) - they have caseworkers who can escalate ESD issues ESD's current average response time for adjudication is 4-6 weeks, so unfortunately your 3-week wait is still within normal processing times.
Thank you for such detailed information. I didn't realize WorkSource offices could help with claims - there's one about 30 minutes from me that I could visit. I'll try calling during those specific times too. Really appreciate the help!
Yes! I eventually got through using a combination of approaches. I tried calling at 8:17am like someone suggested, but that didn't work. Then I visited the WorkSource office like another person recommended, and while they couldn't fix my specific issue, they gave me a direct number to call and a good time to try. I finally got through to someone yesterday and they resolved my adjudication issue in about 10 minutes. Turns out there was just a missing document they needed. Benefits should be coming this week - such a relief!
I just wanna say congrats on the new job!! 🎉 That's awesome and must be such a relief after being on unemployment.
Thank you! It really is a huge relief. The job search was way more stressful than I expected.
One more thing to be aware of: if you earned more than your weekly benefit amount in that final week, you won't receive payment, but it's still important to file and report. It properly closes out your claim cycle and prevents any issues down the road. Good luck with the new position!
Thanks for the extra info and well wishes! I'll definitely file and report everything accurately.
Update on my situation: I finally got my benefits released yesterday after 9 weeks of waiting! What finally worked was getting my state senator's office involved (thanks to whoever suggested that). Their constituent services staff contacted ESD directly and suddenly my claim was "prioritized." Seems wrong that it takes political connections to get what you're legally entitled to, but at this point I'm just relieved to have rent money. For those still waiting - don't give up, and definitely try the state representative/senator route!
Congrats! That gives me some hope. I just emailed my representative this morning with all my claim details. Did they tell you what the actual holdup was with your claim? Was it really the "able and available" issue or something else?
@OP - Yes, it was indeed the able and available issue. Apparently the system had flagged me because I mentioned in one weekly claim that I had attended a family event out of state (was only gone for a weekend). That triggered the A&A review because they thought I might not be available for work. The ridiculous part is that once someone actually looked at my claim, it took them less than 10 minutes to resolve it. It just sat in a queue for 9 weeks with nobody looking at it!
One more important detail - when your staff applies, they need to indicate they're requesting standby status and provide the specific return-to-work date after each period off. So for your March 31 week, they would enter the date they're returning to work in April. For scattered weeks, this gets updated with each period of unemployment. Also, everyone should set up their ESD account and claims BEFORE the first day off work. The system can be glitchy, and you don't want authentication issues delaying benefits.
Also be prepared for SOME of your staff to have their claims go into adjudication for no apparent reason! ESD randomly flags some claims and then it can take WEEKS to resolve!!! Make sure everyone has some savings just in case because there's no predicting who might get stuck waiting!!

Update: I filed the police report this morning and contacted my state representative's office. The police were actually pretty helpful - they took all the information about my car and belongings and said they would send an officer to the property. The state rep's office took all my claim info and said they'd submit an inquiry to their ESD liaison today. Still haven't been able to reach Northwest Justice Project (their line is busy), but I'll keep trying. I'm still sleeping in my car but at least feel like I'm taking steps forward. Thanks everyone for the guidance - will update when I hear anything.

•You're doing everything right. One additional suggestion: many counties have emergency housing assistance programs specifically for people who have experienced illegal evictions. Contact your county's Department of Human Services today and ask about emergency housing vouchers for illegal eviction situations. They may be able to place you in temporary housing while your ESD claim and legal matters are being resolved.

•Fortunately I had my wallet and important docs in my work bag when this happened, so I do have ID and SS card. I've been avoiding shelters because I have my dog with me in the car and most don't allow pets, but at this point I might need to find someone to foster her temporarily. This whole situation is just overwhelming.
