Final UI payment after getting a new job - report or just stop claiming?

I just got hired at a new company (started yesterday) after months of searching! I have potentially one more UI payment left if I'm eligible. For those who've been in this situation - if I file my weekly claim this Sunday and report that I'm now employed, will that trigger some complicated process or extra paperwork? Or is it simpler to just stop filing claims altogether and be done with it? I don't want to deal with a bunch of back-and-forth with ESD if I can avoid it, but also don't want to leave money on the table if I'm still eligible for partial payment.

Congrats on the new job! You should definitely file that final claim and report your work hours/earnings. This is a normal part of the UI process, and ESD actually expects this rather than people just disappearing. You may still be eligible for a partial payment depending on how many hours you worked and what you earned in that week. Just answer the questions honestly about your start date and earnings.

Thanks for the info! Do you know if I'll have to do anything special after this final claim? Or is this truly the last form I'll fill out?

always better to file and be honest!! my buddy just stopped when he got a job and ESD sent him a letter asking why he stopped filing and he had to fill out extra paperwork anyway lol

I went through this exact situation in January. File your final claim and report your new employment/earnings. You'll likely get a partial payment if you didn't work many hours that week. ESD actually prefers this over people just disappearing from the system because it gives them proper closure on your claim. Make sure you report ALL hours worked and earnings for that week accurately. The system will automatically calculate if you're eligible for a partial payment based on your reported earnings. If your earnings exceed your weekly benefit amount, you'll get $0, but your claim will be properly closed out without complications.

This is super helpful, thank you. So once I do this final claim with my work hours reported, I don't need to do anything else? The system will just know I'm employed now and close everything automatically?

Correct. When you report full-time employment, the system registers that you're no longer unemployed. You may see a message when you submit saying something like "You've reported full-time work, no further claims needed" - but if not, just stop filing. Your claim stays open technically for a year from when you first filed, but you don't need to do anything else unless you become unemployed again within that benefit year.

ALWAYS REPORT!! I didn't report my last week because I thought it wasn't worth it and ESD flagged my account for "failure to report earnings" which was a whole nightmare to fix. They wanted proof of my start date and I had to send in paystubs and everything. Not worth the hassle!!!

question - does anyone know if you have to report the job if you haven't actually gotten paid yet by the new company? like if you just started but first paycheck isnt for 2 weeks?

Yes, you still have to report the HOURS worked, even if you haven't been paid yet. ESD goes by when you performed the work, not when you received payment for it. Make sure to report all hours worked during the week the claim covers.

If you're having trouble getting through to ESD to ask these questions directly (which is pretty common), I'd recommend trying Claimyr. Used them last month when I was stuck in adjudication and couldn't get through on the regular line. They got me connected to an ESD agent in about 25 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 and the website is claimyr.com. Might be worth it just to get a clear answer directly from ESD about your specific situation.

Thanks for the suggestion. Based on everyone's advice, I think I'll go ahead and file that final claim and report my new job. Seems like the cleanest approach!

Thank you! It really is a huge relief. The job search was way more stressful than I expected.

One more thing to be aware of: if you earned more than your weekly benefit amount in that final week, you won't receive payment, but it's still important to file and report. It properly closes out your claim cycle and prevents any issues down the road. Good luck with the new position!
