ESD reporting requirements after returning to work - do I need to keep filing weekly claims?
Just got the call I've been praying for after being on standby for what feels like forever (almost 3 months)! Starting work again next Monday and will finally have a paycheck coming in. I'm confused about the proper procedure with ESD though - do I need to formally notify them I'm employed again? Should I submit one final weekly claim reporting my new employment? Or do I just stop filing altogether? Don't want to mess anything up or get hit with an overpayment notice down the road for not following the right process. TIA for any advice!

Congrats on getting back to work! You should definitely file one more weekly claim and report that you've returned to work. There's a question that asks if you've returned to full-time work - mark YES on that. This properly closes out your claim in the system. If you just stop filing without telling them, it can cause problems later.

DONT JUST STOP FILING!! i made that mistake last year and got hit with an overpayment notice 6 months later because they thought i was still claiming benefits. definitely submit that final claim and check the box that says youve returned to work. also report ANY earnings from your first week back even if its partial

Just adding my experience - when I went back to work in March, I submitted my final claim indicating I had returned to full-time employment, and I also called ESD directly to make sure my claim was properly closed. I was on hold for almost 3 hours trying to reach someone! If you're having trouble getting through to ESD to confirm everything's properly closed out, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an agent in about 20 minutes. Here are the exact steps you need to follow: 1. File your weekly claim for the last week you were unemployed 2. Answer "Yes" to the question about returning to work 3. Report any earnings if you worked partial week 4. This will automatically stop your claim You don't need to do anything else - no calls or special notifications required. The system is designed to close claims automatically when you report returning to work. Just keep a copy of your final claim confirmation for your records in case there's ever a question later.

dumb question but what if your employer calls you back but then changes their mind after a couple days? do you have to restart your whole claim or can you just continue the old one? asking for a friend lol

•Not a dumb question! If it's within 4 weeks of your claim closing, you can reopen the same claim without starting over. Just go to your eServices account and look for the "Reopen Claim" option. Anything beyond 4 weeks typically requires a new application.

I went back to work in January after being on standby since October. Filed my last claim, marked that I returned to work, and thought everything was fine. Then in March I got a letter asking why I stopped filing! Had to call and explain I was working again. So weird. The ESD systems seem really inconsistent about how they process returns to work.

One more important tip - make sure you print or save digital copies of ALL your weekly claim confirmations, especially the final one. ESD only keeps records accessible to you online for a limited time, and if there's ever a question or audit later, you'll want proof that you properly reported everything. I learned this the hard way!
