This whole thread has been really helpful. I had no idea about the tax implications when I first filed for unemployment. Glad people are sharing their experiences here.
Just wanted to mention that if you're still looking for work, job search expenses can sometimes be deductible. Might help offset some of the tax burden from unemployment benefits.
Thanks everyone for all the helpful information! This thread has been really educational. I feel much more confident about navigating this situation now.
The key is not to panic. Yes it's stressful but there are options and resources available. You just need to research them and take action.
Final thought - document everything now while you still have benefits. Keep records of your job search, any training you complete, and all communications with Washington ESD. This will be helpful if you need to file a new claim or appeal any decisions later.
Congrats on the new job! The unemployment system can be confusing but it sounds like you're handling it the right way by asking questions first.
I work for a company that hires a lot of people coming off unemployment and we always tell them to make sure they handle their final claim properly. It's pretty standard stuff but important to get right.

One last thing - if you do get approved, make sure you understand how your disability payments might affect your weekly benefit amount. Washington ESD might reduce your unemployment based on what you're receiving from disability.

•Good point. I'll ask about that when I talk to them. Thanks!
