Social Security login verification code texts not coming through - anyone else having this issue?

For the past two days I've been trying to log into my Social Security account online and I'm not receiving the verification text with the code. I've triple-checked that my phone number is correct in the system, tried multiple times throughout the day, and even had my daughter try to help me with it. The system says it's sending the code but NOTHING ever comes through to my phone. My carrier is Verizon if that matters. Is the SSA system having problems right now? Is anyone else experiencing this issue with their verification texts? Getting really frustrated since I need to print my benefit verification letter for my mortgage refinance next week!

At least I'm not the only one! Have you found any workaround? I'm wondering if I should try the email verification option instead.

This happens periodically with the SSA verification system. There are a few things you can try: 1. Use the email verification option instead of text 2. Make sure your phone isn't blocking short code messages (check your spam settings) 3. Try using a different browser or clearing your cache 4. If you have access to a different phone, you can temporarily update your contact information to that number SSA has been having some technical issues this month with their authentication system. They're supposedly working on it, but no official timeline for a fix.

Thank you! I'll try the email option next. Didn't even think about the short code blocking - I'll check my settings too. Really appreciate the help!

I had the same problem last month!!! So frustrating. Turned out my phone was blocking the texts because I had some spam filter turned on. Check your message settings, sometimes carrier blocks these short codes thinking they're spam.

That's correct. Many carriers have increased their spam filtering recently, which sometimes affects legitimate verification texts from government agencies. You can contact your carrier to whitelist short codes from SSA, though the specific process varies by provider. For Verizon, you'll need to check your Message+ app settings or call customer service.

I was having this EXACT issue for days and it was driving me CRAZY!!! Tried the email verification instead and that worked fine. Something is definitely wrong with their text system right now. The email code comes through instantly.

This is a widespread issue right now with Social Security's authentication system. I spoke with an agent yesterday after struggling with the same problem. They confirmed they're having technical difficulties with the text verification system specifically. The agent recommended using the email option for now. If you need to speak with someone at SSA directly about this or other account issues, I'd recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com). Saved me hours of waiting on hold and got me through to an agent in about 15 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU

Thanks for confirming it's a system-wide issue! I'll definitely try the email verification method. And thanks for the Claimyr tip - might use that if I can't get in soon. I've wasted so much time trying to get through to someone at SSA.

When did you last update your contact information with SSA? Sometimes this happens if your phone number was recently changed or ported to a different carrier. Also, some carriers (especially prepaid plans) have issues with government verification codes. For your benefit verification letter specifically, you can try calling your local office directly at 7am when they open - sometimes you can get through faster that way. Otherwise the national number early in the morning (first thing at 8am EST) might work.

I haven't changed my number in years, and it's the same one they've been using for verification texts before. Definitely not a prepaid plan either. Based on what others are saying, it sounds like it might be a system issue on their end.

Just tried your method and it worked! The email code came through right away. Thanks so much for the tip! Now I can print my benefit verification letter.

For anyone else finding this thread, SSA just posted a technical update on their website acknowledging issues with their text verification system. They recommend using email verification temporarily. They expect to have the text system fixed by the end of the week according to the notice.
