Medicare enrollment deadline approaching but never received SSA account instructions in mail
I'm panicking a little bit here. My wife and I updated the phone number on my SSA account about 3 weeks ago, and the representative told us we'd receive instructions in the mail within 10 days to complete the process. We still haven't received ANYTHING and I'm getting extremely worried because I need to sign up for Medicare soon (turning 65 next month). My online account access is currently suspended until I complete this verification process. Has anyone experienced delays with SSA mail recently? Should I just go to the local office in person? I've tried calling but keep getting disconnected after waiting 40+ minutes.

Omg the same thing happened to my mother!!! She waited like 3 weeks for some verification code and it never came. Finally she just went to the local SSA office and they helped her right there. Bring your ID and SS card if you go that route.

•Thank you! Did she need an appointment or was she able to just walk in? I'm worried about wasting a day sitting there if they can't help me without the mail they were supposed to send.

Don't wait for the mail!!! The SSA is notorious for saying they'll send something and then it either never arrives or comes months later. You only have a limited window to sign up for Medicare without penalties. Call them again or go in person ASAP.

•This! I waited 6 weeks for papers that never came. Ended up paying a Medicare late enrollment penalty that I'm STILL paying years later. Dont make my mistake!!!

Former SSA employee here. This happens frequently with account verification letters. There are a few options: 1. Visit your local SSA office in person (bring ID and your Social Security card) 2. Call the national number (1-800-772-1213) and specifically ask to have your case escalated to a supervisor 3. Request that they resend the instructions to your address and confirm they have the correct one For Medicare enrollment specifically, don't worry too much. If you're approaching 65, you're in your Initial Enrollment Period, which runs from 3 months before your birth month to 3 months after. Even if there's a slight delay, you can explain the situation and they can ensure you don't face penalties.

•Thank you for this detailed response. I'll try calling again tomorrow morning. Do you have any tips for getting through faster? I've been trying the 1-800 number but keep getting disconnected after waiting for 40+ minutes.

After dealing with this EXACT problem last month, I found a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to a real SSA agent without the endless waiting. I was super skeptical but it actually worked - you can see how it works in their video here: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU. Saved me from having to take a day off work to go to the office. The agent was able to verify my identity over the phone and restore my account access immediately.

•I've heard about this service! A friend used it to handle her disability application questions. Said it saved her hours of frustration.

•Just checked out the video - this looks promising! I'll try this tomorrow morning. At this point, I'm willing to try anything to get this Medicare enrollment sorted out. Thanks for sharing!

DID U CALL THE MEDICARE NUMBER OR SS NUMBER?? THEY ARE DIFFERENT!!! For Medicare issues u should call 1-800-MEDICARE not the regular SS number. But honestly the local office is FASTER I went last week and only waited 45 min with no appointment.

•I've been calling the Social Security number since that's who told us they'd send the instructions for account verification. I didn't realize they were separate. Maybe I should be calling Medicare directly about the enrollment part?

Let me clarify something important: You actually have two separate issues here that you need to address: 1. SSA Account access issue - This requires contacting Social Security directly 2. Medicare enrollment - You can actually complete this even without your SSA account access Your Medicare Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) begins 3 months before the month you turn 65 and lasts for 7 months total. You can enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B by: - Calling Medicare directly at 1-800-MEDICARE - Going to your local SSA office - Mailing in a signed CMS-40B form (Application for Enrollment in Medicare) Don't miss your enrollment period waiting for account verification. The Medicare enrollment is far more time-sensitive than the account phone number update.

•This is incredibly helpful. I didn't realize I could separate these two issues. I'll download that form right now and get it submitted while I continue working on the account access problem. Thank you!

•The website being down isn't the issue here - they can't log in at all because they're waiting for account verification instructions that were supposed to come in the mail.

UPDATE: I want to thank everyone for their help! I used the Claimyr service that someone recommended and got through to an agent in about 10 minutes. Turns out they had my mailing address slightly wrong (wrong apartment number), so the verification letter was probably returned to sender. The agent was able to verify my identity over the phone and restore my account access immediately. I also downloaded and submitted the Medicare enrollment form as a backup. Such a relief to have this handled before my birthday next month!

•So glad it worked out for you! Nothing worse than stressing about important benefits and not being able to reach anyone for help.

•Thanks for updating us! This is a common issue - mail getting returned because of small address errors. For anyone else reading this thread in the future: always confirm your full mailing address (including apartment numbers) when updating any information with SSA.
