Social Security W-2 missing for 2024 - where to get replacement before filing deadline?
Has anyone else not received their Social Security W-2 form yet? I usually get mine by mid-January but nothing's arrived and I need to file my taxes soon. My husband got his already from his employer, but I retired last May and started collecting SS benefits. Do they even send W-2s for Social Security benefits or is it a different form? This is my first year getting SS retirement so I'm confused about what to expect. Any help would be appreciated!

Social Security doesn't send W-2 forms - they send SSA-1099 forms for benefit payments. These should have been mailed by January 31st. If you haven't received yours, you can get a replacement by logging into your my Social Security account online at ssa.gov. Look under the "Replacement Documents" section and you can print a copy instantly.

•Thank you! I didn't realize it would be a different form. I'll check my account right now.

My mom had the same problem and she had to call them. The 1099 never came in the mail so they had to resend it. Total nightmare getting through on the phone though!!

•Oh no, I hope I don't have to call! My online account is giving me an error when I try to log in. Did your mom eventually get it resolved?

If you're having trouble with your online account, I had success using Claimyr to reach a live SSA agent without the horrible wait times. Just went to claimyr.com and they connected me directly to SSA. There's even a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU I needed my 1099 ASAP for a mortgage application and couldn't wait weeks for a mailed replacement. The agent was able to help me reset my online access and I printed my form right away.

•That sounds like exactly what I need! My online access isn't working and I'm getting anxious about filing my taxes on time. I'll check out that service, thanks for sharing!

•Thanks! That's good to know. The closest office is about 45 minutes away, so I'd prefer online if possible, but it's nice to have options.

Just adding some accurate information here: 1. Social Security benefits are reported on an SSA-1099 (not a W-2) 2. These should have been mailed by January 31st 3. You can get an instant replacement through your my Social Security account 4. If your online account isn't working, you can: - Call SSA directly at 1-800-772-1213 (be prepared for long wait times) - Visit a local Social Security office (appointments recommended) - Use a third-party service to help connect with an agent For future reference, if you have taxes withheld from your Social Security benefits, the SSA-1099 will show the total benefits and amount withheld in Box 3. You'll need this information for your tax return.

UPDATE: I was able to get my SSA-1099! The Claimyr service actually worked - got through to an agent in about 10 minutes. They confirmed my identity and helped me reset my online account access. I just printed my form and can now finish my taxes. Thanks everyone for the help!

•Great! Glad you got it resolved. For future reference, you can also set your preferences in your my Social Security account to receive electronic notifications, which might help avoid this issue next year.

Glad to see this got resolved! For anyone else reading this thread, just want to add that if you're having trouble accessing your my Social Security account, you can also request a new SSA-1099 by mail by calling the automated phone system at 1-800-772-1213 and following the prompts (no need to speak to an agent). It usually takes 7-10 business days to arrive, so plan accordingly if you're close to tax deadlines. The online method is definitely fastest when it works though!

•That's really helpful info about the automated phone system! I didn't know you could request it that way without waiting to talk to someone. Good to know for next time - 7-10 days is much better than the horror stories I've heard about trying to get through to a live agent.

This is such a helpful thread! I'm in a similar situation - just started receiving Social Security disability benefits last year and had no idea they send a different form than W-2s. I've been checking my mailbox every day wondering where my W-2 was! Going to log into my account right now to look for the SSA-1099. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences and solutions.

•Welcome to the club! It's definitely confusing the first time around. I was in the exact same boat - kept waiting for a W-2 that was never going to come. The SSA-1099 should be in your my Social Security account under "Replacement Documents" if you can access it online. If not, the automated phone line that @CosmicCaptain mentioned sounds like a good backup option. Hope you get it sorted out quickly!
