SSA website error when applying for spousal benefits online - any workarounds?

Hey everyone, I'm having trouble applying for spousal benefits online. When I try to submit my application on the SSA website, I keep getting an error message saying 'We cannot process your request at this time. Please try again later.' Has anyone else run into this issue? Any advice on how to get around it or should I just wait and try again later?

Ugh, I had the same problem last week! So frustrating. Have you tried clearing your browser cache or using a different browser? That worked for me after a couple of attempts.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll give that a shot and see if it helps.

Browser cache trick didnt work for me 😤 SSA website is such a mess!

Dang, sorry to hear that! Maybe try again during off-peak hours? Sometimes the site gets overloaded.

The SSA website has been having issues lately. I've heard from a few friends who've had similar problems. It might be worth calling their helpline if the problem persists.

I found a way to get someone on the phone fast! I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

Totally legit! I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imo.

How long did it take for them to get someone on the line?

It took about 45 minutes in my case, but I didn't have to sit there listening to hold music the whole time. They just called me when an agent was ready.

Have you tried applying by phone instead? Sometimes its easier than dealing with the website glitches.

I haven't tried that yet. Do you know if the wait times are bad?

Wait times can be pretty long, ngl. But at least you don't have to deal with website errors. 🤷‍♂️

Pro tip: Try applying super early in the morning or late at night. The website tends to work better when there's less traffic. I managed to submit my application at like 2 AM without any issues lol.

2 AM? Bruh, the things we gotta do to deal with government websites 😂

IKR? But hey, whatever works! 😅

Here's a detailed breakdown of what you can try: 1. Clear your browser cache and cookies 2. Try a different browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, etc.) 3. Use incognito/private browsing mode 4. Disable any ad-blockers or VPNs 5. Check your internet connection 6. Try accessing the site from a different device (phone, tablet, etc.) 7. Wait a few hours and try again (could be temporary server issues) 8. If all else fails, call the SSA directly or visit a local office Hope this helps! Let us know if you manage to get through.

Wow, thanks for the comprehensive list! I'll work my way through these options.

This should be pinned tbh. So many ppl having issues w/ the site lately.

Am I the only one who thinks its ridiculous that we have to jump through all these hoops just to apply for benefits we're entitled to? 🤦‍♂️

Preach! 🙌 The whole system needs an overhaul.

For real. My grandma could design a better website, and she still uses AOL 😂

I had this exact same issue a few months ago! What finally worked for me was switching to a completely different device - I was trying on my laptop and it kept failing, but when I used my phone it went through no problem. Also make sure you're not using any browser extensions that might interfere. If you're still stuck, you can also try going to your local SSA office - they can help you submit the application in person and sometimes that's actually faster than dealing with the website headaches.

That's really helpful advice! I hadn't thought about trying a different device. It's so weird how these government websites can be so finicky - sometimes what works on one device completely fails on another. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I work in IT and see this kind of issue a lot with government sites. One thing that might help is checking if JavaScript is enabled in your browser - some SSA forms won't submit properly without it. Also, if you're using a VPN, try disconnecting it temporarily as government sites sometimes block VPN traffic. Another trick is to fill out the form completely but don't submit it right away - let it sit for a minute or two, then try submitting. Sometimes the session needs time to fully establish. Good luck!
