EAD received but no SSN yet - how to check SSA status?

Hey everyone, I just got my EAD card but I'm still waiting on my SSN. I applied for it during my I-765 application. Anyone know if there's a way to check if a number has been assigned to me yet? My lawyer suggested making an in-person appointment to request the SSN if I haven't received it. What should I do?

Congrats on getting your EAD! πŸŽ‰ I was in the same boat a few months ago. Here's what I learned: β€’ SSA usually takes 2-4 weeks to process SSN requests after EAD approval β€’ You can call the SSA office to check if a number has been assigned β€’ If it's been over a month, definitely make an in-person appointment β€’ Bring your EAD card and passport to the appointment β€’ Some offices allow walk-ins, but appointments are safer Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks so much for the detailed response! It's been about 3 weeks since I got my EAD. I'll give them a call tomorrow to check. Fingers crossed! 🀞

This is great advice! I wish I'd known this when I was waiting for mine. Took me forever to figure out what to do 😩

Quick question - do you know if the SSA office calls or emails when the SSN is ready? Or do they just mail it?

0 coins

Brady Clean

β€’

@profile 3 They usually just mail it. No calls or emails in my experience. Keep an eye on your mailbox!

Pro tip: If you need to talk to someone at SSA, use this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool. It dials the phone menu, stays on hold, and connects you when an agent picks up. Costs $20 but saved me hours of frustration. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU

Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

0 coins

I'm skeptical. How does it know when a real person answers?

0 coins

Leo McDonald

β€’

I get the skepticism, but it really works. They use some AI thing to detect when a human answers. Saved me like 3 hours of hold time last week.

$20 seems steep for a phone call...

β€’

@profile 9 Yeah, it's not cheap, but think about how much your time is worth. For me, not being stuck on hold for hours was totally worth it.

Anyone else notice that the SSA website is always "under maintenance" when you need it most? πŸ™„

I had a similar issue last year. Ended up going to the office in person and got it sorted in like 30 minutes. Sometimes old school is the way to go!

Just went through this exact same process! A few things that helped me: 1. You can actually check your SSN status online at ssa.gov/myaccount if you create an account (though it's sometimes finicky) 2. The 1-800-SSA number (1-800-772-1213) has a "check application status" option - best to call early morning 3. If you're in a rush, some local SSA offices do same-day processing for urgent cases (like job start dates) The waiting is definitely frustrating but 3 weeks is still within normal timeframe. Good luck! πŸ€

Just wanted to add my experience for anyone else going through this! I got my EAD in March and was in the same boat - no SSN after 3 weeks. Called the SSA number (1-800-772-1213) and they confirmed my application was still processing. What worked for me: I made an appointment at my local SSA office after 4 weeks of waiting. Brought my EAD card, passport, and I-94. The whole process took about 45 minutes and I had my SSN card in the mail within a week! Pro tip: When you call, have your A-number ready from your EAD card - it speeds up the process. Don't stress too much @1c02b0eafc8b, 3 weeks is still normal timing. But definitely call tomorrow to check status and consider scheduling an appointment if you're getting close to needing it for work or other applications. Hope this helps! The waiting game is tough but you're almost there! πŸ’ͺ

This is super helpful! I'm in a similar situation - got my EAD last week and already getting anxious about the SSN timeline. The A-number tip is gold, I wouldn't have thought to have that ready when calling. Did you find the online account creation at ssa.gov actually worked for you? I've heard mixed things about whether it works for new SSN applications vs existing cardholders.

β€’

@071e26d3777c Great question! I actually tried the online account creation but ran into issues since I didn't have an existing SSN yet. The system seemed designed more for people who already have numbers and want to check their records. I think it's hit or miss for new applicants - some people say it works, others get stuck at the verification step. The phone call route was much more reliable for me to at least confirm they had my application on file. Hope that helps!

Thanks for sharing your experience! This is really reassuring to hear. I'm actually in week 2 of waiting for my SSN after getting my EAD, so it's good to know that 4 weeks is when you decided to make the appointment. I'll definitely have my A-number ready when I call. Did you find that the in-person appointment was much faster than waiting for it to come through the mail system? I'm starting a new job next month so trying to plan accordingly.

Ravi Patel

β€’

@4df4be235465 Yes, the in-person appointment was definitely faster! Once I got to the office, they were able to process everything on the spot and I got my card within a week versus potentially waiting weeks longer through the regular mail process. Since you have a job starting next month, I'd definitely recommend calling them around the 3-4 week mark to check status and schedule an appointment if needed. Better to be proactive, especially with a firm deadline. Most offices are pretty understanding about work start dates and can sometimes expedite if you bring a job offer letter. Good luck with the new position! πŸŽ‰

Just wanted to chime in as someone who went through this process recently! I received my EAD in January and was anxiously waiting for my SSN too. Here's what I learned from my experience: β€’ The SSA processing times have been really inconsistent lately - I've seen people get theirs in 2 weeks, others waiting 6+ weeks β€’ Definitely call the 1-800-772-1213 number to check status after 3 weeks (sounds like you're right at that point!) β€’ When you call, press 1 for English, then 2 for "if you applied for a Social Security card" - this gets you to the right department faster β€’ If you do need to go in person, try to schedule for early morning appointments - less crowded and staff is usually more helpful The uncertainty is definitely stressful, but hang in there! Most people I know eventually got their cards within 4-6 weeks of getting their EAD. Fingers crossed yours comes through soon! 🀞 Also, make sure your address is exactly the same on all your documents - any discrepancies can cause delays in processing/mailing.

This is such helpful advice! The phone menu navigation tip is great - I always get lost in those automated systems. I'm curious about the address discrepancy issue you mentioned. My EAD has my current address but I moved recently and I'm wondering if that could cause problems. Did you have to update your address with SSA separately, or does it automatically sync with USCIS records?

I just went through this exact situation a couple months ago! Got my EAD in February and was sweating bullets waiting for the SSN. Here's what worked for me: Called the SSA hotline at exactly 8am (they open early and you'll get through faster). Had my A-number from my EAD card ready which really sped things up. They told me my application was "in processing" at the 3-week mark. Made an in-person appointment for week 4 just to be safe. Brought my EAD, passport, I-94, and a copy of my I-765 approval notice. The whole thing took maybe 40 minutes and I had my SSN card in hand within 10 days. One thing nobody told me - if you're planning to start work soon, mention that during your appointment. They can sometimes expedite processing for employment purposes. Don't stress too much about the 3-week timeline - that's actually pretty normal right now. The system is just slow but it does work eventually! Keep us posted on how it goes! πŸ‘

This is really encouraging to hear! I'm actually in a similar timeline - just got my EAD last week and already getting nervous about the SSN wait. The 8am calling tip is brilliant, I never would have thought about timing it that early. Quick question - when you mentioned bringing a copy of your I-765 approval notice to the appointment, was that the original paper notice or just the electronic version printed out? I want to make sure I have all the right documents ready just in case I need to go the in-person route too.

0 coins

Aaron Boston

β€’

@1acc35497938 I just printed out the electronic version and that worked fine! The SSA agent didn't seem to care that it wasn't the original paper copy - they just wanted to verify the approval date and details matched what was in their system. I'd recommend printing it out clearly though, sometimes those PDFs can be a bit blurry. You sound like you're being super prepared which is smart! The whole process is way less scary than it seems once you actually get there.

I'm in the exact same situation right now! Just got my EAD last week and the waiting for the SSN is driving me crazy. Reading through everyone's experiences here is really helpful though - sounds like 3-4 weeks is pretty normal timing. Quick question for anyone who's been through this: did you get any kind of confirmation when you first applied for the SSN during your I-765 process? I feel like I'm just sitting here hoping they actually received my request, but I don't have any tracking number or confirmation that it's in their system. Also seeing some people mention calling with your A-number ready - is that the number that starts with "A" on the front of the EAD card? Want to make sure I have the right info when I call next week. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences! This community is a lifesaver for navigating all this stuff πŸ™

Hey Jacob! I'm actually going through the same thing right now - got my EAD about 2 weeks ago and the SSN wait is nerve-wracking! To answer your questions: unfortunately there's no confirmation when you apply for SSN through the I-765 process, which is super frustrating. You basically just have to trust the system worked. And yes, the A-number is exactly that - the number starting with "A" on your EAD card front. I called yesterday and having that ready definitely helped speed things up. They were able to confirm my SSN application was in their system, which was a huge relief! Hang in there - sounds like we're both right on track with the normal timeline. I'll update here when I get mine! 🀞

I went through this exact same process about 6 months ago and totally understand the anxiety! Here's my timeline and what helped: β€’ Got EAD in September, called SSA at the 3-week mark β€’ They confirmed my application was processing (have your A-number ready when you call!) β€’ Made an in-person appointment at week 4 just to be proactive β€’ Brought EAD, passport, I-94, and printed I-765 approval notice β€’ Got my SSN card in the mail exactly 8 days after the appointment The key thing that helped me was calling early in the morning (around 8:15am) to avoid long hold times. Also, don't panic if the online account creation doesn't work - it's hit or miss for new SSN applicants. Since you're at 3 weeks, I'd definitely call tomorrow to check status. If they say it's still processing, you could schedule an appointment for next week just to have a backup plan. Most offices are understanding about employment needs too if you mention you need it for work purposes. The waiting is torture but you're right on track with normal timing! Keep us posted on how the call goes tomorrow 🀞

This timeline is super reassuring! I'm actually at day 20 since getting my EAD and starting to get nervous about the wait. The early morning calling tip seems to be a theme here - I'll definitely try calling around 8:15am tomorrow. One question: when you went to your in-person appointment, did they process everything on the spot or was it more like they just verified your documents and then you still had to wait for it to arrive by mail? I'm trying to figure out if the in-person route actually speeds up the final delivery or just gives you peace of mind that everything is moving forward. Thanks for sharing such a detailed timeline! πŸ™

@a83f67b67a75 Great question! When I went to my in-person appointment, they essentially re-processed my application on the spot. The agent pulled up my file, verified all my documents matched what they had, and then issued a new SSN request directly from their system. So it wasn't just verification - it was like starting fresh with a "priority" flag. That's why I got my card so quickly afterward (8 days vs potentially weeks more of waiting). The in-person route definitely speeds up the actual delivery time, not just peace of mind. If you're at day 20, I'd say you're still within normal range, but scheduling that appointment as a backup plan is smart! Good luck with your call tomorrow! πŸ‘

Just wanted to add my experience to this helpful thread! I went through the exact same situation last year - got my EAD in October and was anxiously waiting for my SSN. Here's what worked for me: Called the SSA number (1-800-772-1213) at exactly 8:00am on a Tuesday (seems like early mornings really are the key!). Had my A-number from my EAD card ready and they were able to confirm my application was in their system and "actively processing." At the 4-week mark, I scheduled an in-person appointment at my local SSA office. Brought my EAD, passport, I-94, and a printed copy of my I-765 approval notice. The whole process took about 50 minutes - they basically re-submitted my application with priority processing right there on the spot. Got my SSN card in the mail exactly 6 days later! For anyone currently waiting: don't stress if you're still within the 3-4 week window, that's completely normal. But definitely call to check status and consider scheduling an appointment as a backup plan if you're approaching a month. The waiting is nerve-wracking but the system does work! Hang in there @1c02b0eafc8b - you're right on track! πŸ€

This is such a comprehensive overview, thank you! I'm actually in week 2 of waiting after getting my EAD and reading everyone's experiences here is incredibly helpful. The consistency in everyone's advice about calling early morning and having the A-number ready is really reassuring - sounds like there's a tried and true approach that actually works. I'm curious about the "priority processing" you mentioned when you went in person. Did they explain what that means exactly, or is it just that they flag it to move faster through their system? I'm trying to decide if I should wait the full 4 weeks or be more proactive and schedule an appointment around week 3. Thanks for adding such detailed timing to this thread! πŸ™

I'm going through this exact same situation right now! Got my EAD two weeks ago and the SSN waiting game is real. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been super helpful - it's reassuring to know that 3-4 weeks is normal timing and there are concrete steps I can take. The early morning calling strategy seems to be the golden tip here. I'm definitely going to try calling at 8am sharp with my A-number ready. It's also good to know that the in-person appointment route can actually speed things up with priority processing, not just provide peace of mind. One thing I'm wondering - for those who went the in-person route, how far out were you able to schedule appointments? I'm thinking I should probably call to check status around week 3 and potentially schedule an appointment as a backup plan, but I want to make sure I can actually get an appointment within a reasonable timeframe if needed. Thanks to everyone sharing their timelines and tips! This community is amazing for navigating all these processes πŸ™

Hey Max! I'm actually in a very similar boat - just got my EAD about 10 days ago and already feeling anxious about the SSN timeline. Reading through all these experiences has been so helpful! To answer your question about appointment scheduling - from what I've seen others mention, most SSA offices can usually get you an appointment within 1-2 weeks of calling, but it varies by location. Some of the busier offices might push it out further. I'd definitely recommend calling to check your status around week 3 like you're planning, and if they say it's still processing, ask about appointment availability right then while you're on the phone. The consistency in everyone's advice here is really reassuring - the early morning calling strategy and having that A-number ready seems to be the key. I'm planning to call next week myself and will definitely update this thread with how it goes. We're all in this waiting game together! πŸ˜… Good luck and hopefully we both get our cards soon! 🀞
