EDD Disability Application Without Valid SSN - Any Options?

Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle here. I need to apply for EDD disability benefits, but I don't have a valid SSN. Is there any way to still apply or get around this? I'm really struggling and could use some help or advice. Has anyone been in a similar situation?

Sorry to hear about your situation, OP. Unfortunately, a valid SSN is pretty much required for EDD disability benefits. Without it, you're gonna have a tough time applying. Are you in the process of getting a valid SSN?

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I'm working on getting a valid SSN, but it's taking forever. Do you know if there's any way to apply within the time limit while I'm waiting for my SSN to come through?

Oof, that's a tough one. The time limit is there for a reason, and they're usually pretty strict about it. Your best bet might be to contact EDD directly and explain your situation. They might have some options or exceptions for cases like yours.

I was in a similar boat last year. Honestly, there's not much you can do without that SSN. The system is designed to prevent fraud, so they're super strict about it. Keep pushing to get your SSN sorted ASAP!

Man, the system is so broken 🤦‍♂️ People who need help can't get it because of stupid bureaucratic rules. Hope you figure something out, OP!

Have you considered reaching out to a local legal aid organization? They might be able to give you some advice or help you navigate the system. Sometimes they know about loopholes or exceptions that aren't widely advertised.

That's a great idea, I hadn't thought of that. Do you know how I can find a reputable legal aid org in my area?

Try googling 'legal aid [your city/county]' or check out LawHelp.org. They have a directory of free legal aid orgs across the US. Good luck!

I feel for you, OP. The EDD system can be a real nightmare to navigate, even when you have all the right documents. Here's what I know about applying for disability benefits: • A valid SSN is typically required for all EDD applications • There's usually a strict time limit for applying after becoming disabled • You need to have paid into State Disability Insurance (SDI) to be eligible • Medical documentation of your disability is crucial • You can apply online, by mail, or by phone Without a valid SSN, you're definitely facing an uphill battle. Your best options might be: 1. Expedite your SSN application if possible 2. Contact EDD directly to explain your situation 3. Seek help from a legal aid organization 4. Look into alternative assistance programs that might have less strict requirements Hang in there, and don't give up. The system sucks, but there are people and organizations out there who can help!

This is super helpful info! 👍 Do you know if the time limit for applying is strict, or if there's any flexibility?

The time limit is usually pretty strict - typically 49 days from the date you became disabled. But there are some exceptions for 'good cause'. Definitely worth asking EDD about your specific situation.

Thank you so much for this detailed response! It's really helpful to see all the info laid out like this. I'll definitely look into those options you mentioned.

Yo, has anyone tried using one of those paid services that call EDD for you? I heard they can get through faster than if you call yourself.

Yeah, I actually found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Wait, for real? That sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

I know it sounds sketchy, but I swear it's legit. Saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imo.

Idk man, paying to talk to a government agency feels wrong. Shouldn't this be free?

I get where you're coming from, but when you've been trying to get through for weeks and your bills are piling up, $20 starts to look pretty reasonable. It's not ideal, but it got the job done for me. 🤷‍♂️

OP, have you looked into any state or local programs that might be able to help while you're sorting out your SSN situation? Sometimes there are emergency assistance funds or non-profit orgs that can provide temporary support.

This whole system is a joke. They make it so hard for people who actually need help to get it. Meanwhile, I bet there are tons of people scamming the system successfully. SMH 🤦‍♀️

Preach! 🙌 It's like they want us to fail. The hoops we gotta jump through are ridiculous.

C'mon guys, it's not that bad. The rules are there to protect the system. Yeah, it sucks when you're caught in a tough spot, but overall it works for most people.
