Just a heads up, when I set up direct deposit, it took about 2-3 months for it to actually kick in. Don't panic if you don't see the change right away!
lol good luck dealing with the SSA. I swear they make everything 10x more complicated than it needs to be. π
C'mon guys, they're not that bad. Sure, it can be frustrating, but the people I've dealt with have always been pretty helpful.
I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/g7EAnpuazcI
I get the skepticism, but it's legit. They're not affiliated with SSA, just a service that does the waiting for you. Totally optional, but it saved me a ton of time and stress
Anyone know if the LA office is still requiring masks? I lost mine and don't wanna get turned away after waiting in line forever.
Good question, I hadn't even thought about that. I'll make sure to bring one just in case.
Most government offices still require masks due to the high volume of visitors, especially during flu season.
Whatever you decide, make sure you understand how working affects your benefits if you're under full retirement age. They can reduce your benefit if you earn too much.
Am I the only one who thinks its ridiculous that we have to jump through all these hoops just to access OUR OWN MONEY that we've been paying into for decades? The whole system needs an overhaul smh
It's not actually "your" money though. Current workers pay for current retirees. That's how the system works.

Just a heads up, the SSA office in my area has been doing appointments by phone only due to COVID. Might want to check if that's the case for your local office too.

β’Good point! Their website should have the most up-to-date info on how they're handling appointments.

I filed for Medicare Part A last year and it was actually pretty painless. The key is being prepared. Write down all your questions beforehand so you don't forget anything important during the call.

β’That's a great idea! I tend to get flustered on important calls. I'll definitely make a list. Any specific questions you recommend asking?

β’Ask about the effective date, any potential gaps in coverage, and how it'll work with any existing insurance you have. Oh, and don't forget to ask about Part B if you need it!
