TWC benefits after short-term job ended - reapply or continue existing claim?

Hey everyone, I'm super confused about what to do with my TWC claim right now. I got approved for unemployment about a month ago. Then I found this temp position that lasted exactly 2 weeks (it was supposed to be longer but they cut the project short). They just let me go today with zero notice. Do I need to start a whole new unemployment application from scratch, or can I just keep requesting payments on my existing claim? The TWC website is so confusing and I'm worried about messing something up. I really need the money to come through without delays since I've got rent due next week. Anyone dealt with something similar?

Thanks! Do I need to report the 2 weeks I worked somewhere on the payment request? And should I call TWC to let them know my situation changed?

You don't need to file a new claim. Your original benefit year lasts for 52 weeks from when you first applied, even if you worked briefly. Just start requesting payments again and make sure you report the wages earned during those two weeks when you submit your payment request. The system will ask if you worked during the period and for your gross earnings - be accurate with those numbers. If your benefit year has expired (which it hasn't based on your timeline), THEN you would need a new application. But in your case, just resume your regular payment requests through the portal or Tele-Serv.

Thank you so much for explaining! That makes sense. I'll make sure to report those earnings accurately. I'm just worried about messing something up and then having my payments delayed.

Omg that would be terrible. I'll definitely report every penny I earned. Do you know if I should report the wages for the week I worked or the week I got paid? My last day was today but I won't get the final paycheck until next Friday.

You report wages for the week you EARNED them, not when you get paid. So if you worked Monday-Friday this week, you report those earnings on this week's payment request even if the check comes later. Also, when you request payment, TWC will ask if you're still unemployed through no fault of your own - the answer is still yes since you were laid off from the temp job. Make sure you're also keeping up with your work search requirements (minimum 3 activities per week). A short job doesn't reset your benefit year or work search obligations.

This happened to me during Christmas. Got a seasonal job that ended early. I just kept filing my regular payment requests and made sure to enter the earnings for each week. It went smoothly. Don't worry!

I was in EXACTLY your situation last month! Trying to call TWC to confirm what to do was a nightmare - busy signals for DAYS. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to a TWC agent in about 20 minutes. They confirmed I should just continue my existing claim and report the temporary work income. Saved me so much stress! They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh

is that service legit?? seems sketchy to me. how does it even work??

Yeah it's totally legit - they basically keep dialing for you and then call you when they get through to TWC. Saved me hours of frustration. The TWC agent I spoke with was super helpful and confirmed exactly what to do in my situation.

The whole TWC system is DESIGNED to confuse people and make them give up!!! I bet they HOPE you file a new claim so they can deny you and save money!!! This happened to me and they "lost" my work search records and then tried to make me pay back THREE MONTHS of benefits!!! The system is RIGGED against workers!!!

While there can definitely be frustrations with the system, in this case the process is pretty straightforward. Continue with the existing claim, accurately report wages for the weeks worked at the temp job, and maintain work search activities. The TWC system actually handles short-term employment during benefit periods quite efficiently once you understand how to report it correctly.

Thank you everyone for the advice! I just submitted my payment request and made sure to report the exact wages I earned during the 2 weeks I worked. I also documented my 3 work search activities per week as required. The TWC website shows my payment is now pending, so hopefully it goes through without issues. Really appreciate all the help!

Great job handling everything correctly! Your payment should process normally since you reported the wages properly. Keep up with those work search activities and document everything. Good luck with your job search!
