How long until TWC gives appeal hearing decision? Just finished my phone hearing
I just had my TWC appeal hearing over the phone today and I'm honestly freaking out a little. The hearing officer asked me a bunch of questions about why I left my warehouse job (they're saying I quit without good cause, but my supervisor was creating an unsafe work environment). After like 45 minutes of back and forth, she just ended by saying if I disagree with her determination once it's issued, I'd have 14 days to appeal THAT decision too. But she never said how long it would take to get the determination! Will it show up on my TWC account online? Do they mail it? Email? And how long does it usually take after the hearing? I really need this resolved since I've been without benefits for almost 2 months now and my savings are practically gone.

They usually mail the decision within 7-10 business days after your hearing. It will also show up on your online TWC account under the "Determination Letters" section, typically a day or two before you get the physical mail. Don't stress too much - the fact that she mentioned you can appeal her decision doesn't necessarily mean she's going to rule against you. That's just standard procedure they have to tell everyone.

•Thank you! That makes me feel a bit better. Do you know if I should keep requesting payment while I wait for the decision? I don't want to mess anything up.

I went through this EXACT same thing in January!! The waiting is seriously the WORST part. Mine took 12 days before I got anything online or in the mail. But here's what's crazy - when it finally showed up, the determination was actually dated 3 days after my hearing!! So they made the decision pretty quick but took forever to actually send it. The system is SO frustrating!!!!

•Ugh that is frustrating! Did yours show up online first or in the mail first? I check my TWC account like 10 times a day right now.

•Online first! It showed up in my correspondence inbox on a Tuesday evening and then I got the actual letter in the mail on Thursday. And I was EXACTLY like you - checking constantly all day every day, lol. The anxiety is real!!

To directly answer your question - by law, TWC is supposed to issue appeal determination decisions within 14 days of the hearing. In practice, they're generally pretty good about staying within 7-10 business days. Yes, the decision will appear on your online account under "Determination Letters" AND they mail a physical copy. Make sure your mailing address is current in the system. And very important: absolutely continue requesting payment every two weeks while waiting for the decision. If you win your appeal, they can only pay you for weeks you properly requested payment, even if you were eligible! Don't make that mistake.

•Thank you so much for the detailed info. I'll definitely keep requesting payments. I've been documenting all my work searches too just in case.

My cousin had an appeal hearing last year for something similar (hostile work environment). He said his hearing officer was super nice during the call but then denied him anyway. The crazy thing is he appealed THAT decision to the Commission Appeals level and actually won! So don't give up even if the first decision goes against you.

The real problem is that TWC is chronically understaffed and their systems are outdated. I've been trying to call them for 3 weeks about an overpayment issue and can't get through. Busy signals or disconnects every single time. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me through to an actual TWC rep in about 20 minutes. They have a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh Might be worth keeping in your back pocket if you need to follow up about your appeal decision and can't get through on the phones.

•It worked for me after I wasted days trying to get through on my own. Just be ready with all your claim info when they do connect you.

One more thing to keep in mind - if your appeal involves unsafe working conditions, the hearing officer might take a little longer to review any evidence you submitted. Did you provide any documentation like emails, witness statements, or reports about the safety issues? Those cases sometimes take an extra few days because they have to review everything thoroughly.

•I had emails from me reporting the issues to HR and a couple of texts from coworkers backing me up. The hearing officer seemed pretty interested in those, so maybe that's a good sign? I just hope they believe me over my supervisor.

•Yes!! Got the decision yesterday online - I WON!! They ruled that I did have good cause to leave due to the safety concerns! Still waiting to see when the payments will start flowing again but I'm so relieved. Thanks everyone for the support during the wait!

•Congratulations! Make sure you keep up with your payment requests and work search activities. Your back pay for the weeks during the appeal should come through within about 3-5 business days if you've been requesting payment properly all along.

That's AMAZING news!!! 🎉 I'm so happy for you! I remember being in that same anxious headspace waiting for my decision last year. It's such a huge relief when you finally get that validation that you were right to leave an unsafe situation. Your supervisor probably thought they could get away with creating those conditions, but TWC obviously saw right through it. Enjoy those back payments when they hit - you definitely earned them after all that stress!

•Thank you so much! It really is such a relief. I was starting to doubt myself and wondering if I made the right choice leaving that job, but seeing it in writing that TWC agreed with me feels incredible. You're absolutely right about the validation - it's not just about the money, it's about knowing that what I experienced was actually wrong and unsafe. I'm definitely going to treat myself to something nice once those back payments come through! 😊

Wow, what a rollercoaster! I've been following your story and I'm so thrilled you won your appeal! 🙌 It's incredible how much stress and anxiety these hearings cause, but you stuck to your guns about the unsafe conditions and it paid off. Stories like yours give me hope for others going through similar situations. Quick tip from someone who's been through this process - keep screenshots of your determination letter and any correspondence about your win, just in case there are any hiccups with the payment processing. TWC's systems can be glitchy sometimes and having that documentation saved you from potential headaches down the road. Congratulations again and thanks for sharing your journey with all of us!

•This is such great advice about keeping screenshots! I learned this the hard way during my own TWC ordeal last year when they had a "system glitch" that made my determination letter disappear from my online account for like 2 weeks. I was panicking thinking I'd have to start over, but luckily I had saved everything to my phone. TWC's tech issues are no joke - definitely better to be overprepared than scrambling later. @MoonlightSonata you've been through enough stress already, so protect yourself with good documentation habits going forward!
