PA UC weekly claim timing - when to start after initial filing?
I just filed my initial unemployment claim yesterday after getting laid off from my warehouse job. The online system was pretty confusing and now I'm not sure when I'm supposed to start filing my weekly claims? Do I wait until they approve my initial claim first or should I start filing weekly claims right away? The pamphlet they gave me wasn't clear and I'm worried about messing something up. Anyone know the proper timing for this?

•Really? Even if my initial claim still says 'pending'? I don't want to cause some kind of error in the system...

The person above is correct - you should begin filing your weekly certifications immediately after submitting your initial claim. Don't wait for approval. PA UC processes the initial application first, then considers each week you've certified for separately. If your initial claim is approved, they'll pay all properly filed weekly claims retroactively. You can file weekly claims every Sunday through Friday for the previous week. Make sure you report any earnings accurately and complete the work search activities (you need to do at least two per week).

•Thank you! That makes sense. I'll start my weekly claim this Sunday then. For the work search activities, does applying to jobs online count? Or do I need to do something specific?

THIS SYSTEM IS A JOKE!! I filed weekly claims for 6 WEEKS before they even looked at my initial claim, then they DENIED me saying I didn't provide proper income verification even though I UPLOADED EVERYTHING!!! Now I'm in appeals hell waiting for a hearing date. Don't expect anything to make sense with PA UC!!!

•Sorry that happened to you. Did you try calling them? Sometimes talking to a real person helps clear things up faster than waiting for the system.

I went through this last month! Definitely file weekly claims starting immediately (first Sunday-Friday after your initial claim). The system is designed to work that way. One thing to remember - when you do your weekly claim, you'll be certifying for the PREVIOUS week, not the current week. That tripped me up at first. Also make sure you're doing and documenting your work search activities each week (minimum 2). They can audit you later and if you haven't done them, you could have to pay back benefits.

•Thanks for the tip about certifying for the previous week - that would have confused me too! Do you know if they send an email when the initial claim is approved? I'm anxious about checking constantly.

I tried calling PA UC for weeks with no luck getting through when my claim had issues. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to an agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 - saved me so much frustration! Agent told me weekly claims should start right away, regardless of initial claim status.

•Does this actually work? I've been calling for 3 days straight and keep getting busy signals or disconnected.

To answer your question about work search activities: Yes, online job applications absolutely count. You need to do at least two per week, which can include: 1. Applying for jobs (online or in person) 2. Creating a profile on PA CareerLink 3. Posting your resume on job sites 4. Attending job fairs 5. Taking a civil service test 6. Having job interviews Just make sure you keep good records of everything - date, employer name, position, how you applied, contact info, etc. They can request this information later.

•This is super helpful, thank you! I'll definitely keep detailed records of my applications. Do they provide a form somewhere to track this, or should I just make my own spreadsheet?

They don't send an email when approved in my experience. You just have to keep checking your dashboard on the UC portal. Mine took about 3 weeks to change from pending to approved, then the money showed up on my Money Network card a few days later. Keep filing those weekly claims in the meantime!

•3 weeks?? I was hoping it would be faster than that. Guess I need to be patient. Thanks for letting me know what to expect.

My cousin works at the grocery store and they're hiring like crazy right now if you need something while waiting for UC to come through. The UC system is backed up for months sometimes and even when you get approved the payments can be delayed. Not trying to be negative just saying have a backup plan!

•Thanks for the heads up. I am applying to a few places but was hoping the UC would help in the meantime. Didn't realize it could take that long.

There's a work search record form you can download from the PA UC website under the 'Forms' section. But any tracking method works as long as you have all the required details. And while approval times vary, most initial claims are processed within 2-4 weeks if there are no issues requiring investigation. Continue filing weekly claims during this time.

•Perfect, I'll look for that form. Really appreciate everyone's help here - feeling much less confused now!

Just wanted to add - when you file your weekly claims, make sure you're being completely honest about any work you do or money you earn, even if it's just a few hours or small amounts. PA UC has ways to cross-check this information and getting caught being dishonest can result in penalties, overpayment demands, and even fraud charges. It's better to report everything accurately and let them calculate how it affects your benefits. Also, keep all your documentation organized from day one - pay stubs, job applications, correspondence with employers, etc. You never know when you might need to provide additional proof of something.

•This is really good advice about being honest on the weekly claims. I was wondering about that - like if I pick up a one-day gig or something, do I need to report even small amounts? Sounds like the answer is yes. Better safe than sorry with government stuff I guess.
