When should you apply for unemployment benefits in Washington - timing question
I got laid off from my warehouse job yesterday and I'm not sure about the timing for filing my unemployment claim. Should I apply right away or wait? I heard from someone that you should wait a week but I'm seeing conflicting info online. My last day was actually Tuesday but they told us Wednesday morning. I'm worried about messing up the dates and causing problems with my claim. Has anyone dealt with this timing issue before?

Apply as soon as possible! There's a waiting week in Washington but that doesn't mean you should delay filing. You want to get your claim started immediately after your last day of work. The sooner you file, the sooner Washington ESD can process everything.

•Thanks! So I should use Tuesday as my last day of work then? That's when I actually worked last.

•Yes, use the actual last day you worked and earned wages. That's what Washington ESD needs for the claim start date.

I waited almost a week to apply and regretted it big time. You lose those days and can't get them back. File online at esd.wa.gov right now if you can.

•Same here, I thought I needed to wait and it just delayed everything unnecessarily.

•Oh no, I'm glad I asked then. Going to file today for sure.

The rule is to apply within the first week after your last day of work. Don't wait! Even if there's a waiting week, you want to get that clock started. I've been trying to call Washington ESD for two weeks about my claim status and can't get through to anyone.

•If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through. They have a system that calls for you and connects you when an agent picks up. Check out claimyr.com - there's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Interesting, I'll check that out. These phone lines are impossible otherwise.

•Three weeks?? Yeah I'm definitely filing today then.

The waiting week is built into the system automatically. When you file your first weekly claim, that becomes your waiting week. But you need to file the initial application as soon as possible after separation. Washington ESD processes claims based on when you file, not when you lost your job.

•This is correct. A lot of people get confused about the waiting week but it's not something you create by waiting to file.

•That makes sense, thanks for clarifying that.

I filed the day after I got laid off and everything went smoothly. Had my first payment about 2 weeks later after the waiting week. The key is getting all your employer info ready when you file.

•What employer info do I need? I have my final pay stub.

Lena Kowalski
•You'll need employer name, address, dates of employment, reason for separation, and your supervisor's name. The pay stub will help with wage info too.

Don't overthink it. File today, file tomorrow, just don't wait more than a few days. The longer you wait the more you're hurting yourself financially.

•Exactly. Time is money when it comes to unemployment benefits.

One thing to watch out for - make sure you're eligible before filing. If you quit voluntarily or got fired for misconduct, you might not qualify. But if you were laid off like you said, you should be fine.

•Yeah it was definitely a layoff, they eliminated about 15 positions including mine.

•Perfect, that's a clear-cut case for benefits then.

I had a similar situation last year and used Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD when I had questions about my claim timing. Really helped avoid the endless busy signals and hold times. Worth checking out if you run into any issues with your application.

•how much does that cost though?

•It's worth it when you need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD. Much better than spending hours on hold or getting hung up on.

Just to add - when you file, make sure you have your Social Security card and driver's license handy. The online application will ask for that info and it's easier to have it ready.

•Good tip, I'll gather all that before I start the application.

One more thing - after you file your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to get paid. Don't forget about that part. Set a reminder on your phone for the same day each week.

•How does the weekly filing work? Is it online too?
0 coins
Tyrone Hill
•Yes, you log into your Washington ESD account and file your weekly claim. It asks about work search activities and any work you did that week.

•And don't lie on those weekly claims! They audit them and you can get in serious trouble for false information.

The Washington ESD website has all this info but it's buried in there. Main thing is don't delay filing your initial claim. Every day you wait is money you can't get back.

•Yeah I looked at the website but it's pretty confusing. This thread has been way more helpful.

For what it's worth, I always tell people to file within 24-48 hours of job loss if possible. Gives Washington ESD time to process everything and you don't risk forgetting important details about your separation.

•That's a good point about forgetting details. I'm going to file this afternoon.

•Smart move. The details are fresh in your mind right now.

I waited almost two weeks because I was embarrassed about filing for unemployment. Wish I hadn't - there's no shame in using benefits you paid into through your taxes.

Anderson Prospero
•Yeah I feel a little weird about it but you're right, I paid into this system.

•Exactly! It's insurance that you paid for through your work. Use it when you need it.

Final advice - file today if you can. The application takes about 30-45 minutes online and then Washington ESD will mail you information about next steps. Don't let pride or confusion delay you getting the benefits you're entitled to.

•Thanks everyone! Really appreciate all the advice. Going to file my claim this afternoon.

One last thing - if you run into any issues with your claim or need to talk to Washington ESD about your application, remember that Claimyr service I mentioned. It really does help with getting through their phone system when you need actual human help.

•I'll keep that in mind if I run into problems. Hopefully the online filing goes smoothly though.

Filing unemployment was actually easier than I expected. The hardest part is just getting started. Once you file that first claim, the weekly ones are pretty straightforward.

Anderson Prospero
•That's reassuring! I've been putting it off because it seemed overwhelming.

•The Washington ESD online system walks you through everything step by step. Much easier than calling them!

Bottom line: apply immediately, don't wait, file online at esd.wa.gov. Everything else can be figured out later but you need to get that claim started ASAP.
