When to file for ESD unemployment after working partial week? Just got fired Monday

I just got laid off on Monday after working that full day. My supervisor called me into his office at the end of my shift and told me the company was downsizing and I was being let go immediately. I've never filed for unemployment before and I'm confused about when I should apply. Should I wait until next week since I already worked Monday this week? Or should I file right away? Does it matter that I got my final paycheck with Monday's hours included? I'm worried about messing something up and delaying my benefits. Any advice would be really helpful!

File right away! Don't wait. You can apply for unemployment as soon as you've been let go. When you file, you'll report that you worked one day this week and the amount you earned. The system will calculate your benefit amount accordingly. The sooner you apply, the sooner your claim will begin processing. ESD has a waiting week anyway, so delaying would just push everything back.

Thank you! I was overthinking it. I'll file tonight then. Do I need my final paystub before applying or can I estimate what I earned on Monday?

This is correct advice but I want to clarify something important - the "waiting week" is actually the first week you're eligible for benefits, not a delay in processing your initial application. You won't receive payment for that first week, but you MUST still file a weekly claim for it or your subsequent benefits could be delayed. File your initial application immediately, then do your weekly claims on time every week after that, including reporting any hours/earnings accurately.

When I got laid off last year, I waited a full week to apply and that was a HUGE mistake! It basically cost me an extra week of benefits. File your initial application immediately, then you'll start filing weekly claims. During your first weekly claim, you'll report that you worked Monday and how much you earned. ESD will prorate your benefit for that week. Also, make sure you start doing your job search activities right away (you need 3 per week) and keep detailed records. They can audit you at any time and ask for proof.

Thank you for the warning! I didn't know about the job search activities starting right away. Is there a specific format I need to use to track those?

While I understand your frustration with the system, I want to clarify that it's not designed to confuse people intentionally. The ESD website has information explaining when to file (immediately after separation), and how to report partial weeks of work. But I do agree that the process can definitely be improved to make it more user-friendly. Filing immediately is absolutely the right advice.

I've been trying to call ESD for 3 weeks about my claim issues and can't get through. I finally found a service called Claimyr that got me connected to an ESD agent in about 30 minutes instead of spending days redialing. It's at claimyr.com and they have a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 Not saying you'll need this right away, but if you run into issues getting through on the phone after you file, it might save you a lot of headaches. Definitely file your initial claim immediately though!

Thanks for this! I've heard the phone lines are impossible. I'll keep this in mind if I run into problems.

To answer your follow-up question about the paystub - you can estimate your Monday earnings on the initial application. Just make sure to report the exact amount when you do your first weekly claim. ESD understands that sometimes you don't have final paystubs yet. They're more concerned that you report accurately on your weekly claims.

my brother just went thru this last month!! one thing nobody mentioned is that they look at your earnings from the previous 18 months not just ur current job so even if u were only at this job a short time u might still qualify

To summarize what everyone has said: 1. File your initial application immediately - today if possible 2. Report that you worked Monday and the amount earned when filing 3. Understand there's a waiting week (first eligible week) where no benefits are paid, but you must still file a weekly claim 4. Begin your three job search activities right away and document them carefully 5. Report your final pay accurately on your weekly claim For job search documentation, ESD provides a job search log on their website, but you can also create your own as long as it includes: date of activity, type of activity, employer/job contact information, position applied for, and results/follow-up. Keep these records for at least a year.

Thank you so much for this clear summary! I just submitted my initial application and I feel much better knowing I'm doing this correctly. I've already started looking for jobs and I'll make sure to track everything carefully.
