Washington ESD - when can i apply for unemployment after getting laid off?

Got laid off from my warehouse job yesterday due to company downsizing. I've never filed for unemployment before and I'm not sure when I'm supposed to apply. Should I wait a certain amount of time or can I file right away? Also do I need to wait until I get my final paycheck or can I start the process now? Really stressed about paying rent next month so any guidance would be appreciated.

You can file your Washington ESD claim right away! Don't wait - there's usually a one week waiting period anyway so the sooner you file the better. You don't need to wait for your final paycheck.

Thanks! Should I file online or call them? I heard their phone lines are crazy busy.

0 coins

Definitely file online at esd.wa.gov - much faster than trying to call. The phone lines are a nightmare right now.

File immediately but make sure you have all your employment information ready. You'll need your employer's name, address, your dates of employment, and reason for separation. The Washington ESD system will ask for this during the initial claim filing.

0 coins

Do I need my pay stubs or just the general employment info?

0 coins

Just the general info for the initial filing. They might ask for pay stubs later if your claim goes into adjudication for verification.

0 coins

What's adjudication mean? Sounds scary lol

I was in the same situation last year - got laid off on a Friday and filed my claim that same day online. The key thing is don't delay because your benefit year starts from when you file, not when you lost your job. Washington ESD processes claims pretty efficiently if everything is straightforward.

How long did it take to get your first payment?

0 coins

About 3 weeks total including the waiting week. But I had to call them once to check on my claim status because I wasn't getting updates.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone to check on your claim, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually gets you connected to an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

0 coins

Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach anyone at Washington ESD.

0 coins

I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Got connected to an agent in about 20 minutes to resolve an issue with my weekly claim filing.

0 coins

Never heard of this but honestly anything is better than calling 200 times and never getting through

0 coins

MAKE SURE you file your weekly claims every week even if your initial claim is still processing!!! I made this mistake and it delayed everything. You have to certify that you're looking for work and available to work each week.

0 coins

When do I start filing weekly claims? Right after I submit the initial application?

0 coins

Yes! Washington ESD will tell you when your first weekly claim is due after you file the initial claim. Usually it's the following Sunday.

0 coins

Just want to add that if you're laid off due to no fault of your own (like downsizing), you should qualify for benefits as long as you meet the work history requirements. Washington ESD looks at your earnings in the base period which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters.

0 coins

I've been working there for 2 years full time so I should be good on that front.

0 coins

Yeah you'll definitely meet the requirements then. Just be honest about everything in your application.

0 coins

does anyone know if getting severance pay affects when you can file? my company is giving me 2 weeks severance

0 coins

Severance might delay when your benefits start but you should still file your claim right away. Washington ESD will factor in the severance when calculating your benefit start date.

0 coins

ok good to know, I was worried I had to wait until after the severance period ended

0 coins

The Washington ESD website has a pretty good checklist of what you need before filing. I'd recommend looking at that first so you don't have to stop in the middle of your application to find documents.

0 coins

Good point, I'll check that out before I start the application process.

0 coins

One more thing - make sure you understand the job search requirements. Washington ESD requires you to make a certain number of job contacts each week and keep a log. The requirements vary depending on your situation but it's usually 3 job contacts per week.

0 coins

Do I need to start job searching immediately or do I get some time to file paperwork and stuff first?

0 coins

You need to be available and looking for work starting with your first weekly claim. So basically right away, but they understand you need a few days to get organized.

0 coins

The job search log is really important - Washington ESD can audit you and if you don't have proper documentation they can disqualify you.

0 coins

If your claim ends up in adjudication for any reason and you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD to resolve it, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier is honestly a lifesaver. Saved me weeks of trying to get through on my own.

0 coins

How much does something like that cost? I'm already strapped for cash.

0 coins

I'd rather not get into pricing details here but for me it was worth it to avoid the stress and delays of trying to reach Washington ESD the traditional way.

0 coins

Also make sure your employer reports your separation correctly to Washington ESD. Sometimes there are delays or issues if the employer doesn't submit the separation information properly or if there's a dispute about the reason for termination.

0 coins

My employer said they'd handle all the paperwork on their end. Should I follow up with them?

0 coins

It doesn't hurt to ask HR when they plan to submit the separation notice to Washington ESD, just so you know what to expect.

0 coins

this whole unemployment system seems so complicated for something that should be straightforward. why can't they just make it simple?

0 coins

Tell me about it. The whole system needs an overhaul but we're stuck with what we have.

0 coins

It's complicated because they have to prevent fraud while also making sure people who deserve benefits get them. But yeah, the process could definitely be more user-friendly.

0 coins

One thing that helped me was setting up text notifications in my Washington ESD account so I'd get alerts about important updates or if they needed additional information from me.

0 coins

That's a good tip! I'll make sure to do that when I set up my account.

0 coins

Quick reminder - when you file your initial claim, you'll get a determination letter in your online account within a few days. Make sure to read it carefully because it will tell you your weekly benefit amount and any potential issues with your claim.

0 coins

Should I be worried if it takes longer than a few days to get that letter?

0 coins

Not necessarily, sometimes it takes up to a week. But if it's been longer than that, you might want to call and check on the status.

0 coins

Or use Claimyr to get through to someone quickly if the regular phone lines aren't working for you.

0 coins

DON'T forget to report any part-time work or odd jobs while you're receiving benefits! Even small amounts can affect your weekly benefit calculation and Washington ESD will find out eventually.

0 coins

Good to know. I was thinking about doing some gig work while looking for a new job.

0 coins

You can definitely do gig work, just make sure to report all earnings when you file your weekly claims. They'll deduct from your benefits but you can often still come out ahead.

0 coins

My advice is just get the claim filed ASAP and then worry about the details later. The longer you wait, the longer it takes to get benefits flowing.

0 coins

Yeah that makes sense. I'm going to file online tonight after I gather all my employment info.

0 coins

Smart move. Having everything ready beforehand makes the online application go much smoother.

0 coins

Last thing - keep copies of everything you submit to Washington ESD and screenshots of your weekly claim confirmations. If there are ever any issues or disputes, having that documentation can save you a lot of headaches.

0 coins

Thanks everyone for all the help! This has been super informative and way less scary than I thought it would be.

0 coins

Good luck with your claim! It sounds like you have a straightforward situation so everything should go smoothly.

0 coins

hope everything works out for you OP. being laid off sucks but at least Washington ESD benefits can help bridge the gap while you find something new

0 coins

Appreciate the support! Definitely feeling more confident about the process now.

0 coins

Just to close this out with one final piece of advice - once you do get your first benefit payment, consider setting up direct deposit if you haven't already. Much faster than waiting for a debit card or check to arrive in the mail.

0 coins

Perfect timing on that tip - I'll set that up when I complete my application tonight. Thanks again everyone!
