When to apply for unemployment in Washington - timing questions
I got laid off yesterday from my warehouse job and I'm not sure about the timing for filing my unemployment claim. Should I apply right away or wait? I heard there's some rule about when you can start collecting benefits. Also, do I need to wait until I get my final paycheck or can I file now? Really confused about the whole process and don't want to mess anything up.

File as soon as possible! There's a one-week waiting period in Washington before you can receive benefits, so the sooner you apply the better. You don't need to wait for your final paycheck.

•Thanks! Should I apply today then or wait until Monday since it's Friday?

•You can apply any day online at esd.wa.gov. The system is available 24/7 so no need to wait for business hours.

definitely apply ASAP. I made the mistake of waiting two weeks after I got fired and basically lost out on benefits for those weeks. washington esd only pays from when you actually file your claim

•Wait, so if I was laid off 3 weeks ago but just found out about unemployment now, I can't get benefits for those 3 weeks?

•Correct - Washington ESD benefits start from your application date, not your separation date. You can't backdate claims except in very limited circumstances.

I tried calling Washington ESD to ask about timing but could never get through. Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Super frustrating when you need answers quickly.

•I had the same problem until I found Claimyr - it's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com and their demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Saved me so much time and stress.

•Never heard of that but willing to try anything at this point. The phone system is impossible.

Here's the key timing info: File your initial claim immediately after job separation. Benefits begin the Sunday of the week you file (not the week you were laid off). You'll have a one-week waiting period before receiving your first payment. Then file weekly claims every week you're unemployed.

•So if I file on Wednesday, my benefit week starts that Sunday? That's confusing.
0 coins
Cynthia Love
•Exactly. Washington ESD benefit weeks run Sunday through Saturday. Whatever week you file in, that's when your claim becomes effective.

•This is super helpful, thank you! I'll file today then.

make sure you have all your info ready before you start the application. you'll need your SSN, employment history for the last 18 months, reason for separation, etc. the application times out if you take too long

•Good point! What if I don't remember exact dates from previous jobs?

•do your best to estimate. you can always provide more accurate info later if needed. don't let missing a few dates stop you from filing

I'm so anxious about this whole thing. What if I file wrong? What if they think I quit instead of getting laid off? What if my employer fights it? I can't afford to mess this up.

•Take a deep breath! The application will ask for your separation reason and you can explain the layoff. If there are any issues, Washington ESD will investigate and you can provide documentation.

•But what if they don't believe me? I'm freaking out about this.

•If your employer contests your claim, you'll get a chance to present your side during the adjudication process. Have any layoff paperwork ready just in case.

The Washington ESD system is so broken. Takes forever to get approved, customer service is nonexistent, and don't even get me started on the website crashes. But yeah, file immediately because every day you wait is money lost.

•I feel your pain but the system has gotten better since the pandemic mess. Still not perfect but more stable now.

•Maybe slightly better but still a nightmare to deal with when you actually need help.

Pro tip: after you file your initial claim, set up a reminder to file your weekly claim every Sunday. Missing a week can really complicate things and you might lose benefits for that period.

•How do I file the weekly claims? Is it the same website?
0 coins
Philip Cowan
•Yes, same site. You'll log into your account and there will be a weekly claim option. Super easy once you do it the first time.

wait can I file if I'm getting severance pay? my company is giving me 2 weeks severance and I don't know if that affects unemployment
0 coins
Cynthia Love
•Severance can affect your benefits depending on how it's paid. If it's a lump sum for specific weeks, those weeks might not be payable. If it's just additional money, you report it on your weekly claims.

Caesar Grant
•it's a lump sum but not tied to specific weeks, just general severance. still report it?
0 coins
Cynthia Love
•Yes, report all income on your weekly claims. Washington ESD will determine how it affects your benefits.

I applied the day after I got laid off and I'm glad I did. My claim went through adjudication smoothly and I started getting benefits after the waiting week. Don't overthink it, just file.

Gemma Andrews
•How long did your adjudication take? Mine's been pending for 2 weeks now.

Lena Schultz
•About 10 days for me. If it's taking longer you might want to try calling to check on it.

The job search requirements start immediately too, right? Even during the waiting week?
0 coins
Cynthia Love
•Yes, you need to be actively seeking work from day one. Keep track of your job search activities for your weekly claims.

•Do I need to register with WorkSource too?

Cynthia Love
•You should register with WorkSourceWA within a reasonable time after filing. It's part of the work search requirements.

honestly the hardest part was just getting through on the phone when I had questions. the automated system is terrible and the wait times are insane. wish I had known about services to help with that

Beatrice Marshall
•There are services for that now! I used Claimyr when I needed to talk to someone about my claim status. Much easier than trying to call directly.

Mae Bennett
•Really? How does that work?

Beatrice Marshall
•They basically handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when they get an agent on the line. Found them at claimyr.com.

My brother waited a month before applying because he thought he might find a job quickly. Big mistake - lost out on like $1200 in benefits he could have gotten.

Rita Jacobs
•Yikes, that's exactly what I was worried about. Definitely filing today.

•Yeah don't make his mistake. You can always stop claiming if you find work right away.

Quick question - do I need to file during business hours or can I do it anytime? I work weird hours at my current part-time job.

Khalid Howes
•The online system is available 24/7. You can file your initial claim and weekly claims anytime that's convenient for you.

•Perfect, thanks! I'll do it tonight after work.

Make sure you understand the difference between filing your initial claim and filing weekly claims. The initial claim establishes your benefit amount, then you file weekly to actually receive payments.

Saanvi Krishnaswami
•So I have to file something every week? I thought it was just the one application.
0 coins
Reina Salazar
•Right, you file the initial claim once, then file a weekly claim every week you want benefits. Each weekly claim certifies that you're still unemployed and looking for work.

The whole system seems overwhelming but everyone's right about filing immediately. I waited 3 days and regretted it even though it was just a few days.

•This thread has convinced me. Filing right now before I lose any more time.

•Good choice! Better to have the claim started and deal with any issues as they come up rather than wait.

One more thing - if you have questions after filing, be prepared for long waits to reach customer service. That's where services like the one mentioned earlier can really help cut through the phone maze.

•Yeah I saw people mentioning Claimyr earlier. Might be worth checking out if I run into problems.

•Definitely keep it in mind. Sometimes having a real person to talk to about your claim makes all the difference.

Filed mine on a Friday afternoon and had no issues. The system worked fine and I got my determination letter within a week. Don't stress too much about the timing of when during the day you file.

Rita Jacobs
•That's reassuring! I was worried about filing on Friday thinking it might delay processing.

Brielle Johnson
•Nope, doesn't matter what day of the week. They process applications continuously.
