How long before I can collect unemployment benefits in Washington?
Just got laid off yesterday from my warehouse job after 2 years. I know I need to file for unemployment but I'm confused about the timing. How long before I can actually start collecting benefits? Do I need to wait a week or something? And when should I file - immediately or should I wait? Really need to know because rent is due in 3 weeks and I'm already stressed about money.

You should file your claim ASAP! There's a one week waiting period in Washington before you can collect your first payment, but that week starts counting from when you file, not when you got laid off. The sooner you file, the sooner that waiting week is over.

•Thanks! So I can file today even though I just got laid off yesterday? I thought there might be some kind of delay requirement.

•Yep, file today if possible. The waiting week is built into the system automatically - you don't need to create your own delay.

File immediately on the Washington ESD website. The waiting week is unpaid but you still need to file your weekly claim for that week to keep everything moving. After that first week, if you're approved, you'll start getting payments.

•Got it, so I file weekly claims even during the waiting week? That makes sense I guess.

•Wait, I thought you had to be unemployed for a full week before you could even apply? That's what my friend told me.

•No, that's old information or maybe from another state. In Washington you can file the day after your last day of work.

The key thing to understand is that there are actually two different waiting periods. The one week waiting period everyone mentioned, plus the time it takes Washington ESD to process and approve your claim. If everything goes smoothly and there are no adjudication issues, you might see your first payment 2-3 weeks after filing.

•2-3 weeks total? That's cutting it close for my rent situation. Is there any way to speed this up?

•Unfortunately the waiting week is mandatory and processing times vary. Make sure you file accurately to avoid delays from adjudication issues.

•If you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about your timeline, I've had good luck using Claimyr to get through their phone lines. It's at claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

Don't wait! File today! I made the mistake of waiting a few days thinking I needed to 'process' being laid off first and it just delayed everything unnecessarily. Every day you wait is another day before you can start collecting.

•Yeah I'm definitely filing today after reading all this. Just need to gather my employment info first.

•Make sure you have your last employer's info handy - you'll need their address and your dates of employment.

I'm so confused by the Washington ESD website. It keeps asking me about my 'benefit year' but I've never filed before. What does that even mean?

Connor O'Brien
•For a new claim, they'll establish your benefit year when you file. Don't worry about that part - just focus on getting your initial application submitted.

•Ok good, I was worried I was missing something important. This whole system is so confusing when you're new to it.

The Washington ESD system has gotten better but it's still not great. Just be prepared for potential glitches when you're filing. I had to try three times last month because the site kept timing out.

•Great, another thing to worry about. Should I try filing at a specific time of day?

•Early morning or late evening seem to work better - less traffic on the site.

•I always file my weekly claims on Sunday mornings and rarely have issues with the site then.

Quick question - do you have to do the work search requirements during that first waiting week? Or does that start after you're approved?

Paolo Rizzo
•Work search requirements start immediately when you file your claim, even during the waiting week. You need to be actively looking for work and keep records.

•Thanks, good to know. Better start applying places right away then.

One thing nobody mentioned - make sure you understand how your benefit amount is calculated. It's based on your earnings in your 'base period' which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you filed.

StarSailor
•That sounds complicated. Is there a way to estimate what I might get before I file?

Emma Davis
•Washington ESD has a benefit calculator on their website that can give you a rough estimate if you know your quarterly earnings.

UGH the whole system is such a mess. I filed 6 months ago and it took FOREVER to get approved because they kept asking for more documentation. Just be prepared for potential delays if they need to verify anything about your employment.

•What kind of documentation did they ask for? I want to be prepared.

•They wanted my pay stubs, separation notice from my employer, and then randomly asked for more info about a job I had 2 years ago. It was ridiculous.

•That sounds like your claim went into adjudication. If you have a straightforward layoff situation it should be much smoother.

Pro tip: when you file your weekly claims, do it the same day each week and keep track of everything. The system is picky about consistency and if you miss a week or file late it can cause issues.

•Good advice. I'll set a reminder on my phone for the same day each week.

•Sunday is usually the best day since that's when the new week opens up for filing.

Just want to add that if you run into issues or need to speak to someone at Washington ESD, don't just keep calling and getting busy signals. I found Claimyr really helpful for getting through to an actual person when I needed help with my claim status.

•Is that like a calling service? How does it work?

Freya Andersen
•Yeah, they handle the calling and waiting for you. Saved me hours of frustration trying to get through myself. Check out their demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ to see how it works.

The most important thing is just to file ASAP and be accurate with all your information. Don't overthink it - the system will guide you through the process and you can always call if you have questions later.

One more thing - if you're worried about money in the short term, look into local food banks and assistance programs while you're waiting for benefits to kick in. There's no shame in getting help when you need it.

Been through this process twice now and honestly the waiting is the worst part. Just stay on top of your weekly claims and job search requirements and try not to stress too much about things outside your control.

Just to clarify something I saw mentioned earlier - you don't need to wait to file your claim, but you do need to have actually been separated from your job. So if you got notice but are still working, wait until your last day.

•Good point. In my case I was laid off yesterday so I'm clear to file today.

•Perfect, then you're all set. File today and start that waiting week clock ticking!

If anyone's still having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone when they need help, I had success with that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. It's worth trying if you're stuck and need to talk to someone.

•How much does something like that cost? Is it worth it?

•For me it was worth it because I was spending hours trying to get through on my own. Saved me a lot of time and frustration when I needed answers about my claim.
