How soon can you file for unemployment after losing your job in Washington?
Just got laid off from my warehouse job yesterday and I'm wondering how quickly I can get my unemployment claim started. My supervisor said I should file right away but I'm not sure if there's a waiting period or anything. Do I need to wait until after my last paycheck clears or can I start the process immediately? Also worried about whether being laid off vs fired makes a difference for timing. Has anyone filed right after losing their job?

You can file your initial claim the same day you lose your job or become unemployed. There's no waiting period to start the application process. The key is to file as soon as possible because your benefit year starts the week you file, not when you lost your job.

•Thanks! So I don't have to wait for my final paycheck to come through or anything like that?

•Nope, you can file immediately. Just make sure you report any final wages when you do your weekly claims later.

I filed the day after I got terminated and it was fine. The Washington ESD system will ask you about your last day of work and you just put that date in. Being laid off vs fired doesn't change when you can file, but it might affect whether you qualify.

•Good to know! I was laid off due to company downsizing so hopefully that helps my case.

•Layoffs are usually straightforward for qualification. Just make sure you have all your employer info ready when you file.

File ASAP! I made the mistake of waiting two weeks thinking I needed to wait and I basically lost two weeks of potential benefits. The sooner you file, the sooner your claim gets processed and you can start receiving payments.

•Oh wow, I had no idea you could lose weeks like that. Definitely filing today then!

•Yeah the benefit year starts when you file, not when you lost your job. Don't wait!

Just a heads up - even though you can file right away, it might take several weeks for your claim to get approved and for you to receive your first payment. Don't expect money immediately. But definitely start the process now.

•How long did it take for you to get approved? I'm trying to plan my budget.

•Mine took about 3 weeks, but that was pretty typical. Some take longer if there are issues with your claim.

been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about my claim status and its impossible. if you need to talk to someone about your filing I found this service called claimyr.com that actually got me through to an agent. they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. saved me hours of calling

•Is that legit? I've never heard of using a service to call for unemployment stuff.

•Yeah it's real, they just help you get through the phone system. I was skeptical too but it actually worked.

•I used them too when I couldn't reach anyone about my adjudication. Worth it if you're stuck.

Make sure you have your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment information for the past 18 months ready before you start filing. The process goes much faster if you have everything organized.

•What kind of employment info do they need exactly?

•Employer names, addresses, dates worked, and reason for separation for each job. Also your wages if you have pay stubs.

Filed mine three days after getting let go and had no problems. The online system is pretty straightforward. Just answer all the questions honestly and completely.

•Did you file online or over the phone?

Nolan Carter
•Online is way easier. The phone lines are always busy anyway.

don't wait!! I waited like a week because I thought I needed to get my final check first and it was a mistake. you lose that week of benefits permanently

•That's what I keep hearing. Definitely not waiting then!

Alfredo Lugo
•Exactly right. The waiting week was eliminated in Washington but you still lose time if you delay filing.

One thing to keep in mind - even though you can file immediately, your first payable week is typically the week after you file. So if you file mid-week, that partial week usually isn't payable. But still file as soon as possible.

Gianna Scott
•So if I file today (Thursday), this week won't count for benefits?
0 coins
Danielle Campbell
•Correct, but next week will be your first payable week. That's why filing early in the week is slightly better timing-wise.

I was laid off on a Friday and filed that same day. Had my first weekly claim ready to file the following Sunday. The key is just getting that initial claim in the system ASAP.

•How long after filing your initial claim could you do your first weekly claim?

Tasia Synder
•You can usually file your first weekly claim the Sunday after your benefit week starts. The system will tell you when it's available.

Washington ESD is pretty good about processing claims quickly if there are no issues. Being laid off instead of fired should help avoid complications. Just make sure all your info is accurate when you file.

•What happens if there are issues with the claim?
0 coins
Selena Bautista
•It goes into adjudication which can add several weeks to the process. That's why accuracy is so important upfront.

Pro tip: have your bank account info ready too if you want direct deposit. It's much faster than waiting for a debit card or check in the mail.

Gianna Scott
•Good point! I'll have my banking details ready when I file.

Ellie Perry
•Yeah the debit card took forever to arrive when I filed. Direct deposit is definitely the way to go.

Just remember you'll need to file weekly claims every week to keep getting benefits. Don't just file the initial claim and forget about it. Set a reminder for every Sunday.

•When do the weekly claims usually open up?

Landon Morgan
•Usually Sunday morning around 6 AM. You have until the following Saturday to file each weekly claim.

honestly the whole system is confusing but filing right away is definitely the right move. I waited almost a week and regretted it. Even if you're not sure about something, file first and ask questions later

Gianna Scott
•That seems to be the consensus - file immediately no matter what.

Lourdes Fox
•Yep, you can always correct info later if needed, but you can't go back and claim earlier weeks.

If you run into any problems reaching Washington ESD by phone during the process, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier really does work. I was stuck in adjudication hell and couldn't get through to anyone for weeks. They got me connected to an actual person who cleared up my issue.

•How much does something like that cost?

•I'd rather pay a little to actually talk to someone than spend hours calling and getting nowhere. Check their site for current pricing.

The bottom line is file TODAY. Don't overthink it, don't wait for anything. The sooner you get your claim in the system, the sooner you can start the whole process. You've got nothing to lose by filing immediately.

•Alright, I'm convinced! Filing my claim right now. Thanks everyone for the advice!

•Smart choice. The earlier you file, the earlier you can potentially receive benefits.

Also worth mentioning - if you do temp or part-time work while collecting unemployment, you can still potentially get benefits. Just make sure to report all wages on your weekly claims. Don't let that stop you from filing your initial claim.

Gianna Scott
•That's good to know. I might pick up some gig work while looking for a full-time job.

•Yeah, just be honest about all income. They'll calculate partial benefits if you're working reduced hours.

took me 6 weeks to get my first payment after filing but that was during covid when everything was backed up. should be faster now but still file immediately to start the clock ticking

Gianna Scott
•Wow 6 weeks seems like forever. Hopefully it's faster now like you said.

•yeah things are much better now. most people get processed in 3-4 weeks if there are no issues

One last thing - make sure you understand the job search requirements before you start receiving benefits. You'll need to log your job search activities every week. But don't worry about that for filing your initial claim.
0 coins
Gianna Scott
•How many jobs do you have to apply to each week?
0 coins
Alejandro Castro
•I think it's 3 job search activities per week, but check the Washington ESD website for current requirements.

Seriously just file now. I've seen too many people overthink this and lose weeks of potential benefits. The worst thing that happens is they ask for more information later. The best thing is you get your claim started immediately.
