How long after leaving a job can you file for unemployment with Washington ESD?
I just got laid off from my warehouse job yesterday and I'm wondering how soon I can file for unemployment benefits. Is there a waiting period or can I apply right away? I've never filed for UI before and I'm not sure about the timing. Also worried about whether I'll qualify since I was only at this job for 8 months. Any advice would be appreciated!

You can file your initial claim immediately - there's no waiting period to apply. Washington ESD actually recommends filing as soon as possible after your last day of work because benefits are backdated to when you first became unemployed, not when you file. The sooner you get your claim in, the sooner you can start the process.

•That's good to know! Should I wait until I get my final paycheck or can I file before that?

•You can file before getting your final paycheck. Just make sure to report any final wages when you do your weekly claims.

8 months should be enough time to qualify. Washington ESD looks at your earnings over the past 18 months to determine eligibility. As long as you earned at least $1,900 in your highest quarter, you should be good.

•I was making $18/hour full time so I should be well above that threshold. Thanks for the info!

Just a heads up - even though you can file right away, it might take a while to actually get through to someone at Washington ESD if you need to call them. I've been trying to reach them for weeks about my claim status and can never get through. The phone lines are always busy.

•Same here! I've been calling the main number every day and either get a busy signal or get disconnected after waiting on hold for an hour.

•Have you guys tried using Claimyr? It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. I used it last month when I was stuck in adjudication and it actually worked. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they even have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Never heard of that before. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•It's legit. They basically call Washington ESD repeatedly until they get through, then connect you to an actual agent. Saved me weeks of frustration trying to get my claim sorted out.

Make sure you have all your info ready when you file - SSN, employer details, dates of employment, etc. The online application is pretty straightforward but you don't want to have to start over because you're missing something.

•Good point. I should probably gather all that stuff before I start the application.

i filed like 3 days after getting fired and it was fine. just go on the washington esd website and fill out the application. takes maybe 20 minutes if you have all your info

•nah it was pretty easy. just make sure you do the weekly claims every week or you'll miss out on payments

The key thing is don't wait. I made the mistake of waiting two weeks after my layoff because I thought I needed to cool off or something. Big mistake - I lost two weeks of potential benefits even though they backdated it. File ASAP!

•Oh wow, I'm glad I asked then. I was thinking about waiting until next week.

•Actually, if you file within the first few days they should still backdate to your actual last day of work. The system is designed to cover that gap.

One thing to keep in mind - if you were laid off vs fired, make sure that's clear on your application. Being laid off due to lack of work makes you eligible immediately, but if there were performance issues it might trigger an adjudication review.

•It was definitely a layoff - they eliminated my whole department due to budget cuts. Should I get that in writing from HR?

Ethan Brown
•That would be helpful to have just in case, but if it was a clear layoff situation you should be fine.

Don't stress too much about the timing - Washington ESD is pretty good about backdating benefits to when you actually became unemployed. Just get your claim filed this week and you'll be in good shape.

•Thanks everyone for all the advice! I'm going to file today.

Also remember you'll need to start doing job searches right away and log them in WorkSourceWA. Don't wait until after your claim is approved - start documenting your job search efforts immediately.

•How many job searches do I need to do per week?

Carmen Ruiz
•It's usually 3 job search activities per week, but check your specific requirements when you file your weekly claim.

THE SYSTEM IS SO BROKEN! I filed immediately and it still took 6 weeks to get my first payment because they put me in adjudication for NO REASON. Good luck getting anyone on the phone to explain what's happening!

•That's exactly why I ended up using that Claimyr service someone mentioned. I was in the same boat - stuck in adjudication with no explanation and couldn't reach anyone at Washington ESD.

•Did it actually help? I'm so frustrated at this point I'll try anything.

•Yeah, they got me connected to an agent within a few hours and we cleared up the adjudication issue the same day. Worth it just for the peace of mind.

Just wanted to chime in - I filed for unemployment three times over the years and each time I filed within 1-2 days of my last day of work. Never had any issues with timing or backdating. The Washington ESD system handles it automatically.

•That's reassuring to hear from someone with experience. Thanks!

Make sure you know exactly what your last day of work was. If you had any vacation or sick leave paid out, that might affect when your benefits start. But you should still file right away regardless.

•I did get paid for unused vacation days. Does that count as wages?

Jamal Anderson
•Yes, you'll need to report that when you do your weekly claims. It might delay your first payment by a week or two depending on the amount.

honestly the whole process is pretty straightforward once you get started. i was overthinking it too but it's just filling out forms online. the hard part is getting through to them if something goes wrong

•Yeah, sounds like calling them is the real challenge if issues come up.

Random question but related - does anyone know if the one week waiting period is still a thing? I thought they got rid of that during COVID but I'm not sure if it came back.

•The waiting week was eliminated permanently in 2021. You get paid for your first week of unemployment now.

I was in a similar situation last year - laid off after 7 months at a job. Filed the next day and everything went smoothly. The key is just getting it done quickly and not overthinking it.

•Good to hear from someone in a similar situation. How long did it take to get your first payment?

Amara Eze
•About 2 weeks from when I filed to when I got my first payment. Pretty standard timeline.

One last tip - take screenshots of everything when you file your claim and save all the confirmation numbers. If something goes wrong later you'll want to have that documentation.

•Great advice! I'll make sure to document everything.

Also remember to set up your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account if you don't already have one. That's how you'll access your unemployment account and file weekly claims.

•I think I have one from when I renewed my driver's license online. Should be the same account, right?

•Yep, same account! Just make sure you can log in before you need to file your weekly claims.
