When can I start collecting unemployment benefits after losing my job?
Just got laid off yesterday and I'm trying to figure out the timeline for when I can actually start collecting unemployment benefits. I know I need to file a claim but I'm confused about when the payments would actually begin. Do I have to wait a certain period before I can start receiving benefits? Also wondering if there's a waiting week or something like that. Any advice would be helpful since I need to plan my finances.

You can file your Washington ESD claim immediately after losing your job, but there are some timing rules you need to know about. Benefits don't start until the Sunday of the week you file your initial claim, and you'll have a one-week waiting period before you receive your first payment.

•So if I file today, does that mean I won't get paid for this week at all?

•Correct - the first week is your waiting week. You'll file weekly claims but won't receive payment for that first week unless you have an overpayment situation later.

Make sure you file as soon as possible though! I waited like 2 weeks thinking I needed to get my paperwork together first and it just delayed everything. Washington ESD backdates your claim to when you file, not when you lost your job.

•Good to know! I was thinking I should wait until I had all my documents ready.

•Yeah definitely don't wait. You can always submit additional documents later if needed.

The whole process can be confusing to navigate, especially when you're trying to get through to Washington ESD on the phone to check your claim status. I had so much trouble reaching them until I found Claimyr at claimyr.com - they help you get through to an actual agent. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•How does that work exactly? Do they just call for you?

Gianna Scott
•They handle the calling process and get you connected to a Washington ESD representative. Saved me hours of busy signals and hold times.

Just to clarify the timeline - you file your initial claim, then you have to file weekly claims every week to certify you're still unemployed and looking for work. The first weekly claim you file will be your waiting week, so no payment. Second weekly claim should result in your first payment if everything's approved.

•How long does it usually take to get approved? I'm worried about paying rent next month.

•If it's straightforward it can be approved within a week or two. But if they need to verify anything or it goes to adjudication, it can take much longer.

ugh the whole system is so slow... took me 6 weeks to get my first payment because they had to verify my employment history

•Six weeks?! That's terrifying. What did you do for money during that time?

•had to borrow from family and use credit cards. it was awful

To answer your original question more directly - assuming you file today and everything goes smoothly: Week 1 (this week) = waiting week, no payment. Week 2 = first potential payment, usually processed by Wednesday and deposited by Friday if you're on direct deposit.

•That's actually not as bad as I thought. I was worried it would be a month before I saw anything.

•Just make sure you keep filing those weekly claims even during the waiting period!

One thing nobody mentions - make sure you start your job search activities right away too. Washington ESD requires you to be actively looking for work and they can ask for your job search log at any time.

•How many jobs do I need to apply to each week?

Alfredo Lugo
•It depends on your situation but generally 3 job search activities per week. Check the Washington ESD website for the specific requirements.

I remember being so confused about this same thing when I got laid off. The waiting week thing seems weird but it's just how the system works.

•Yeah it does seem like a strange rule. Why have a waiting week at all?

Kelsey Hawkins
•It's partly to reduce costs and partly to encourage people to find work quickly. Most states have some version of a waiting period.

Pro tip - set up direct deposit when you file your claim. Getting checks by mail adds extra time and they can get lost. Direct deposit is much faster.

•Good thinking, I'll make sure to do that when I file.

•Yes! Direct deposit made such a difference for me. Got paid every Friday like clockwork.

If you run into any issues with your claim or need to talk to someone at Washington ESD, definitely consider using Claimyr. I was stuck in adjudication for weeks and couldn't get through on the phone. They got me connected to an agent who cleared everything up in one call.

•Is there a cost for that service?

•There is a fee but it was worth it to avoid the endless calling and busy signals. Saved me so much stress.

Make sure you have all your employer info ready when you file - company name, address, dates of employment, reason for separation. It'll make the process smoother.

•I have my final pay stub, will that have most of that information?

Abigail Patel
•Pay stub helps but you'll also need the full company address and your supervisor's name if possible.

Don't forget you'll need to register with WorkSource too for the job search requirements. It's all connected to your unemployment claim.

•Is that something I do at the same time as filing for unemployment?

Kaitlyn Jenkins
•You can do it around the same time. The Washington ESD website will walk you through all the requirements.

I'm in the same boat, got laid off last week and just filed my claim. Still waiting to hear back but at least I got it submitted quickly.

•How long did it take you to complete the application?

Daniel White
•About 30 minutes once I had all my information together. The online system is pretty straightforward.

One more thing - if your employer contests your claim, that can delay things significantly. Hopefully that won't happen in your case since you mentioned it was a layoff.

Harper Collins
•Why would they contest it if it was a layoff? That seems unfair.
0 coins
Edwards Hugo
•Some employers contest every claim to try to keep their unemployment tax rates down. It's frustrating but legal.

The good news is once you get approved and start receiving benefits, the process becomes pretty routine. File your weekly claim, get paid, repeat.

Harper Collins
•That's reassuring. I was worried it would be complicated every week.

Nolan Carter
•Nah, the weekly claims are easy. Just a few questions about whether you worked and if you looked for jobs.

Been there, done that. The waiting week sucks but it goes by fast. Just focus on getting your claim filed and start looking for work right away.

•Thanks for the encouragement. This whole situation is pretty stressful.

•Totally understandable. Unemployment is tough but the benefits help bridge the gap while you find something new.

Just want to mention Claimyr one more time since phone access to Washington ESD can be so difficult. If you end up needing to speak with someone about your claim, it's a real lifesaver. The video demo I mentioned shows exactly how it works.

•I might need that if I run into problems. Good to know it's an option.

•Definitely keep it in mind. Much better than spending hours trying to get through on your own.

Bottom line - file now, don't wait. The sooner you file, the sooner you can start the process. Even with the waiting week, you'll be glad you got it started.

•Alright, I'm convinced. Going to file my claim right after I finish reading through all these responses.

•Smart move. And don't stress too much - thousands of people go through this process every week and it works out.
