When do I file for unemployment benefits in Washington - confused about timing
I'm getting laid off next Friday and I'm not sure when exactly I should file for unemployment benefits. Do I file right away or wait until after my last day? I've heard different things from coworkers and I don't want to mess this up. Also, my employer is giving me two weeks of severance pay - does that affect when I can start collecting unemployment? I'm really stressed about this whole process and could use some guidance on the timing.

You should file your initial claim as soon as possible after your last day of work. Don't wait! The sooner you file, the sooner your claim can be processed. Your severance pay will likely delay when you can start receiving benefits though - Washington ESD considers severance as wages for the weeks it covers.

•So I should file immediately on Monday after my last day on Friday? And the severance will just push back when I actually get paid?

Demi Hall
•Exactly! File Monday if possible. The severance will be allocated across the weeks it covers, so you won't get UI benefits for those weeks, but your claim will be active and processing.

i made the mistake of waiting like 3 weeks to file thinking i needed to find a job first... big mistake. you lose out on benefits for those weeks you didn't file. file ASAP

•Oh no, I'm glad I asked! I was thinking I should wait until I knew for sure I couldn't find work right away.

•Yeah, this is super common. Washington ESD can't pay you for weeks before you filed, even if you were eligible. The system doesn't work backwards.

Here's what you need to know about timing: File your initial claim during the first week you're unemployed. You can file online at esd.wa.gov or by phone. Make sure you have your employer information, Social Security number, and details about your separation ready. The waiting week was eliminated in Washington, so you can potentially receive benefits for your first week of unemployment if you file promptly.

•Thank you! This is really helpful. I'll make sure to file that Monday morning with all my paperwork ready.

•Wait, I thought there was still a waiting week? When did that change?

•The waiting week was suspended during the pandemic and hasn't been reinstated. You can receive benefits for your first week of eligible unemployment as long as you file timely.

I've been trying to call Washington ESD for two weeks about my claim timing and can never get through. The phone lines are always busy or I get disconnected after waiting forever. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there?

•I had the same problem until I found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com. They basically call Washington ESD for you and get you connected to an agent. Saved me hours of calling and getting nowhere. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Try calling right at 8am when they open. That's the only time I've ever gotten through on my own.

Just to clarify about the severance - Washington ESD will ask you to report it when you file your weekly claims. They'll calculate how much it covers per week and deduct that from your benefits. Don't try to hide it because they'll find out anyway and you could face an overpayment.

•Good to know. I definitely want to be honest about everything. Better to delay benefits than have to pay money back later.

•yeah my friend got hit with an overpayment notice for not reporting severance. they wanted like $4000 back plus penalties

DONT WAIT! I cannot stress this enough. File immediately after your last day of work. I waited thinking I needed to job search first and lost out on 3 weeks of benefits. The system is not designed to help you if you don't follow their timeline exactly.

•This thread is really convincing me to file right away. I had no idea the timing was so critical.

•Same thing happened to me. Lost a month of benefits because I thought I had to wait. These systems are not user-friendly at all.

Also remember that you need to file weekly claims every week to keep your benefits active, even during weeks when you're not eligible due to severance. This keeps your claim current and ensures you don't miss any potential benefits.

•So I file weekly even if I know I won't get paid that week because of severance?
0 coins
Demi Hall
•Exactly. It's like checking in to keep your claim alive. You report the severance and they'll show $0 benefit for that week, but your claim stays active.

The whole unemployment system is such a mess. Why make it so confusing about when to file? They should just let people file whenever and figure it out.

•I think it's because they're trying to prevent fraud and make sure people only claim for weeks they're actually unemployed. But yeah, it's confusing.

•Still seems like they could make it more user-friendly. Most people have no idea about these timing rules.

Quick question - if I file on Monday but my last day was Friday, do I claim benefits for that Friday or wait until the following week?

Philip Cowan
•You would claim for the full week that includes your Friday. Unemployment weeks run Sunday to Saturday, so if Friday was your last day, you'd claim for the partial week that includes Friday through Saturday.

I used Claimyr too when I couldn't get through to Washington ESD about my filing date. Worth every penny to actually talk to someone who could answer my questions instead of guessing.

•How quickly did they get you connected?

•Took about 15 minutes. Way better than the 4 hours I spent on hold the day before with nothing to show for it.

Pro tip: have all your employer information ready before you file. Employer name, address, phone number, your employee ID, dates of employment, and reason for separation. Makes the process much smoother.

does anyone know if you can file on weekends or is it only business days?

•You can file online 24/7 at esd.wa.gov. The phone lines are only open during business hours, but the website works anytime.

I'm in a similar situation but my employer is giving me 4 weeks of severance. Should I still file right away even though I won't get benefits for a month?

Philip Cowan
•Yes, absolutely file right away. Your claim will be processed and ready to go when your severance period ends. If you wait, you'll have to start the whole process from scratch after your severance runs out.

•That makes sense. Better to have everything set up and ready to go.

The Washington ESD website actually has a pretty good timeline of when to file. Check the 'When to Apply' section. But basically, file as soon as you're unemployed or your hours are reduced below full-time.

•I'll check that out. Thanks for the specific page reference!

Remember that you also need to register with WorkSource Washington for job search requirements. Don't forget that step or it could delay your benefits.

Elliott luviBorBatman
•Oh I didn't know about that requirement. Is that something I do right away too?

Mason Lopez
•Yes, you need to register within a certain timeframe. The Washington ESD website will tell you exactly when based on your situation.

Just went through this whole process last month. File immediately, be honest about everything, and keep detailed records of all your job search activities. The system works if you follow all the rules exactly.

One more thing - make sure your employer doesn't contest your claim. If they do, it could delay your benefits while Washington ESD investigates. Most layoffs are straightforward but it's something to be aware of.

•It's a company-wide layoff due to budget cuts, so hopefully that won't be an issue. But good to know it could happen.
