When do you file unemployment claim with Washington ESD - timing questions
I got laid off yesterday and I'm not sure about the timing for filing my unemployment claim. Do I file right away or wait until next week? I heard there's some strategy about when to file but I'm getting conflicting info online. Also does it matter what day of the week I submit it? I want to make sure I don't mess up the timing and lose out on benefits I'm entitled to.

File as soon as possible! The general rule is to file your claim during the first week you're unemployed or have reduced hours. Your claim becomes effective the Sunday of the week you file, so don't wait. Delaying could cost you benefits you can't get back.

•Thanks! So if I file today (Wednesday) my claim starts from this past Sunday?

QuantumQuest
•Exactly right. Your benefit year starts the Sunday of the week you file your initial application with Washington ESD.

I made the mistake of waiting two weeks to file thinking I needed to wait for my final paycheck. Big mistake - lost those first two weeks of benefits completely. Washington ESD doesn't backdate claims so file immediately.

•Oh no! That's exactly what I was worried about. Filing today then.

•same thing happened to my brother, he waited thinking he had to get his severance first

One thing to keep in mind - you can file even if you're still receiving pay for unused vacation time or severance. Those payments might affect your weekly benefit amount but they don't prevent you from filing the initial claim. The key is getting your claim established.

•Good to know! I do have some accrued vacation pay coming. Should I report that when I file?

•Yes, always report all income when filing. Washington ESD will determine how it affects your benefits, but being honest upfront prevents overpayment issues later.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD to ask this same question but their phone lines are always busy. It's so frustrating when you just need a simple answer about timing and can't reach anyone.

•For basic filing questions like timing, the Washington ESD website has pretty clear guidance. But if you need to speak to someone about your specific situation, try calling right at 8am when they open.

•I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD when I couldn't reach them any other way. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Made it so much easier to get my questions answered.

•Never heard of that but I'm desperate at this point. Does it actually work?

The day of the week doesn't matter for your initial claim filing, but it matters for your weekly claims later. You'll need to file weekly claims every Sunday for the previous week. But for the initial application, just file as soon as you can.

Zoe Dimitriou
•That makes sense. So initial claim ASAP, then weekly claims every Sunday going forward.

NeonNomad
•Exactly. And make sure you file those weekly claims even if you're still in adjudication or waiting for your first payment.

ugh this system is so confusing, why cant they just make it simple and let you backdate if you file late

•I think the no-backdating rule is to prevent fraud and ensure people are actively looking for work from day one of unemployment. It does seem harsh though.

•Other states allow some backdating in certain circumstances but Washington is pretty strict about it.

Pro tip: Have all your employment information ready before you start the application. You'll need dates of employment, wages, and employer contact info for the last 18 months. Having it organized makes the process much smoother.

•Good advice! I'll gather all my W-2s and pay stubs before I start.

•Also have your SSN and ID ready. The system can time out if you take too long looking for documents.

I filed on a Friday afternoon and had no issues. The Washington ESD system is available 24/7 online so timing during the day doesn't really matter, just don't wait multiple days or weeks.

•Same here, filed late at night and it went through fine. The important thing is filing during the right week.

Make sure you file in Washington state if that's where you worked, even if you've moved. The state where you earned wages is usually where you file, not where you currently live.

•I worked and live in Washington so I'm good there. But good point for people who might have moved.

•Yeah, interstate claims can get complicated. Always file where you earned the wages first.

When I couldn't get through to Washington ESD by phone to confirm my filing timing, I ended up using Claimyr to connect. They were able to get me through to an actual person who confirmed I had filed correctly. Really saved me a lot of anxiety about whether I'd done it right.

•How does Claimyr work exactly? Do they just call for you or what?

•They handle the calling and waiting on hold, then connect you when they get through to an agent. Saved me hours of trying to call myself.

The waiting period after filing can be nerve-wracking but don't panic if you don't hear back immediately. Washington ESD has to process your claim and verify your employment history, which takes time.

•How long does the initial processing usually take?

Yara Khoury
•Typically 2-3 weeks for straightforward claims, longer if there are issues that need adjudication.

Remember you have to be able and available for work when you file. If you're planning surgery or a vacation right after getting laid off, that could affect your eligibility for those weeks.

•Good point. I'm definitely available and actively looking for work.

File online at secure.esd.wa.gov if possible. It's faster than calling and you get confirmation that your application was submitted. Plus you can check your claim status online afterwards.

•That's what I was planning to do. Thanks for confirming that's the best way.

I was scared I filed too early because I got laid off on a Thursday but didn't file until the following Tuesday. Turns out that was fine - still counted as filing in the first week of unemployment.

•That's reassuring! I was worried about the exact timing too.

Just wanted to add - if you're filing due to reduced hours instead of complete job loss, you can still file. Partial unemployment benefits are available if your hours were cut significantly.

•This is important! A lot of people don't realize you can file for partial benefits.

The most important thing is not overthinking it. File as soon as you're unemployed or have reduced hours. Washington ESD will sort out the details and contact you if they need more information.

•You're right, I was definitely overthinking it. Going to file right now. Thanks everyone for the helpful advice!

Quick reminder - even if you're not sure about eligibility, it's better to file and let Washington ESD make the determination rather than assume you don't qualify and miss out.

•Great point. Better to try and be told no than not try at all.

When I had questions about my claim status after filing, I couldn't get through by calling Washington ESD directly. Someone suggested Claimyr and it worked great - they got me connected to an agent who could check on my application status. Worth considering if you run into phone issues later.

•I might need that if I have trouble reaching them. The phone system seems pretty overwhelmed most of the time.

One last tip - keep records of when you filed and any confirmation numbers you get. Having that documentation can be helpful if there are any issues with your claim later.

Just to echo what everyone else is saying - file immediately! I made the same mistake as Jamal and waited thinking I needed to get all my paperwork in order first. Lost out on two weeks of benefits that I could never get back. Washington ESD is pretty strict about their no-backdating policy. The online system at secure.esd.wa.gov is really straightforward and you can always update information later if needed. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good - get that claim filed today!

•Absolutely agree with filing immediately! I was in a similar situation last year and almost made the same mistake of waiting. The "no-backdating" rule really caught me off guard - seems like such a harsh policy when you're already dealing with job loss stress. But you're right that the online system is pretty user-friendly once you get started. @95f40cf0903a hope you got your claim filed successfully!
