Where to file weekly claim for unemployment with Washington ESD?
I just got approved for unemployment benefits last week and I'm supposed to file my first weekly claim but I have no idea where to do this. The approval letter mentions filing weekly claims but doesn't give clear instructions on where exactly to go. Is it through the same portal where I filed my initial claim? I'm worried about missing the deadline and losing my benefits.

You need to log into your account at secure.esd.wa.gov and look for the weekly claim filing section. It should be pretty obvious once you're logged in - there's usually a button or link that says something like 'File Weekly Claim

•Thanks! I'll check that out. Do you know what day of the week I'm supposed to file?

•You can file starting Sunday for the previous week. Most people file on Sunday or Monday but you have until Saturday to get it done.

omg I had the same problem when I first started! the washington esd website is so confusing. you go to the main page and then click on file a claim, then weekly claim. but honestly the whole site is a mess and half the time it doesn't work

•The website issues are the worst part. I've been trying to file my weekly claim for 3 hours this morning and keep getting error messages.

•If you're having trouble with the website, try using a different browser or clearing your cache. Sometimes that helps with the Washington ESD site glitches.

I've been filing weekly claims for 2 months now and I still get stressed about it every week. You file through your SecureAccess Washington account, same login you used for your initial application. Just make sure you answer all the questions honestly about any work you did that week.

•What kind of questions do they ask on the weekly claim?

•Basic stuff like did you work, how many hours, did you look for work, are you able and available to work. Nothing too complicated but be accurate with your answers.

Pro tip: if you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone to ask questions about filing, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach a real person. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

•Is that legit? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks about my weekly claim issues and can never get through.

•Yeah it's real. They basically call for you and get you connected to an actual Washington ESD agent. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked.

The weekly claim filing is pretty straightforward once you know where to go. The bigger issue is making sure you're meeting the job search requirements. You need to document your job search activities and be prepared to show proof if they ask.

•How many jobs do I need to apply for each week?

Brandon Parker
•It's usually 3 job search activities per week, but check your specific requirements in your account. Could be applications, networking, interviews, etc.

just go to the esd website and click around until you find it. took me like 20 minutes the first time but now I can do it in 2 minutes

•Not everyone has time to 'click around' - some people need actual directions

•fair enough, I was just saying it gets easier once you do it a few times

Washington ESD really needs to improve their user interface. I've been filing weekly claims for months and it's still not intuitive. The fact that new claimants can't easily find where to file is a major problem.

•Agreed. The whole system feels like it was designed in 1995 and never updated.

•At least it works better than it did during the pandemic when nobody could get through at all

Here's the step-by-step process: 1) Go to secure.esd.wa.gov 2) Log in with your SecureAccess Washington credentials 3) Click on 'Unemployment Services' 4) Look for 'File Weekly Claim' or 'Submit Weekly Claim' 5) Answer all the questions truthfully 6) Submit before the deadline (usually Saturday). Keep documentation of your job search activities handy in case they ask for details.

•This is exactly what I needed - thank you so much for the clear instructions!

•Saving this comment for future reference. The Washington ESD website should have instructions this clear.

I remember being so confused about this too. The approval letter they send doesn't really explain the process clearly. Once you file your first weekly claim it becomes routine, but that first time is definitely confusing.

•Yes! I thought I was missing something important because the instructions were so vague.

•Nope, you're not missing anything. Washington ESD just isn't great at explaining things clearly to new claimants.

Make sure you file every week even if you don't think you qualify for benefits that week. Missing a weekly claim can cause delays or issues with your benefits. I learned this the hard way when I skipped a week thinking I didn't need to file.

•What happened when you skipped? Did you lose benefits?

•I had to call Washington ESD to reopen my claim and explain why I missed a week. It took forever to get through and delayed my payments.

PSA: The weekly claim filing opens at 6 AM on Sunday and you have until midnight Saturday to file. Don't wait until the last minute because the website sometimes crashes on Saturdays when everyone is trying to file at once.

•Good to know! I was planning to file Saturday evenings but I'll switch to Sunday mornings instead.

•Sunday mornings are definitely the best time. The site is usually working properly and there's less traffic.

If you're still having trouble navigating the Washington ESD website, I had good luck using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. I needed to talk to someone about my weekly claim questions and they actually got me through to a real person at Washington ESD. Worth checking out if you need to speak with an agent.

•How much does that cost? I'm already struggling financially and don't want to pay extra fees.

•I don't remember the exact cost but it was worth it to me to avoid spending hours on hold. Check their website for current pricing.

Another tip: if you worked any hours during the week you're filing for, make sure you report them accurately. Washington ESD will find out anyway through their wage matching system, and if you don't report correctly it can cause overpayment issues later.

•What if I only worked a few hours? Do I still need to report that?

Taylor To
•Yes, report any work even if it's just one hour. They'll calculate how it affects your benefits, but not reporting it can get you in trouble.

The mobile version of the Washington ESD website is terrible for filing weekly claims. I always use a computer when possible because the mobile site glitches constantly and sometimes doesn't save your answers properly.

•Ugh yes, I tried filing on my phone once and it logged me out halfway through. Had to start over.

•Exactly! Stick to desktop/laptop for anything important on the Washington ESD site.

I've been filing weekly claims for 6 months now and here's what I wish someone had told me: keep a log of when you file each week and screenshot the confirmation page. Sometimes the system glitches and you need proof that you actually filed on time.

•Smart idea. I never thought about keeping screenshots but that makes total sense.

•I do this too after having an issue where Washington ESD claimed I didn't file one week even though I definitely did.

For anyone else reading this thread, the key thing is just to start filing as soon as you're approved. Don't overthink it - the questions are straightforward and you can always call if you make a mistake (though good luck getting through). The important thing is establishing the habit of filing every week.

One more Claimyr mention since people are asking about getting help - I used them when I had questions about reporting part-time work on my weekly claims. The Washington ESD agent they connected me with was really helpful and explained exactly how to report my hours. Definitely worth it if you need to talk to someone and can't get through the regular phone lines.

•Good to know they can help with specific questions like that. I might need to use them for my own part-time work situation.

•The regular Washington ESD phone system is basically useless, so services like this fill a real need.
