PA UC vacation reporting dilemma - how to file when on vacation next week?
So I'm currently collecting unemployment in PA and I've got a week-long vacation planned next week. I'm really confused about how to handle this with my weekly claim. Should I just file normally and answer truthfully that I wasn't available to work that week? I know I won't get benefits for that week, but I'm worried about triggering some kind of investigation or messing up my claim if I don't report it correctly. Also, this current week I only had one day where I could work (got 5 hours at my part-time gig). How do I report this accurately without causing problems? Anyone dealt with this vacation situation before? The UC website isn't very clear about this...

You're right to be concerned about reporting correctly. For your vacation week, you should absolutely file your weekly claim and honestly report that you were not able and available to work. When prompted about whether you were able and available each day, mark 'no' for the days you were on vacation. You won't receive benefits for that week, but your claim stays active. For this current week with the 5 hours of work, report the earnings as required, and you may receive partial benefits depending on how much you earned compared to your weekly benefit amount. Remember, failing to file for any week creates more complications than filing truthfully, even if it means no payment for that week.

•Thanks for the explanation. Just to be clear - filing and saying I wasn't available won't flag my account or create problems when I try to claim again after my vacation? That's what I'm most worried about.

•Actually, skipping weeks isn't recommended. It can sometimes trigger a need to reopen your claim, which creates unnecessary delays. Always file and just report accurately - that's the safest approach with PA UC.

BE CAREFUL!!! I made the mistake of not filing one week when I was away and when I came back I had to REOPEN my entire claim which took FOREVER to process!!! The system locked me out and I couldn't get ANYONE on the phone for weeks. The UC system is designed to trip you up and make you lose benefits. ALWAYS file your weekly claim even if you know you won't get paid - just mark that you weren't available those days. Trust me, you don't want the HEADACHE I went through!!!

•Oh wow, that sounds like a nightmare. I definitely don't want to deal with reopening my claim. I'll make sure to file and just be honest about not being available.

Congrats on getting a vacation! Hope you enjoy it. I think as long as you're honest you'll be fine. That's what I would do anyway.

I had this exact situation in January. Here's what you need to do: 1. For your current week with 5 hours of work: Report those earnings as normal. Answer YES that you were able and available to work (assuming you were available the other days). 2. For your vacation week: File your claim as usual, but answer NO to the question about being able and available to work for each day you're on vacation. You'll get $0 for that week. 3. For the week after vacation: Resume filing normally. The key is to never skip filing, even for weeks you know you won't be paid. This keeps your claim active and prevents system flags. For your partial work week, remember to report gross earnings (before taxes) on the week you WORKED, not when you get paid. I promise this won't trigger an investigation as long as you're truthful - the system is designed to handle vacation weeks.

Has anyone had luck actually reaching someone at the UC office to ask these kinds of questions? I've been trying to get through for 2 weeks about my own issue and it's always busy or disconnects me. So frustrating!

•I was in the same boat last month - couldn't get through for days. I ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to a PA UC rep in about 20 minutes after trying for almost two weeks on my own. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2. Totally worth it when you have an urgent question or issue that needs resolving and can't waste days redialing.

i think u can still get paid if u were available for part of the week? not sure tho

•That's not quite how PA UC works. You need to be able and available for work each day of the week to receive benefits for that week. If you mark even one day as not available, you won't receive benefits for the entire week. The only exception is if you have a medical limitation that's already been approved by UC.

ANOTHER THING - make sure when you come back from vacation you keep up with your WORK SEARCH REQUIREMENTS that week!!! You still need to do your work search activities even in the week after vacation or they can disqualify you!!! PA UC is looking for ANY reason to deny benefits!!!

•Good reminder about the work search activities! I'll make sure to do those as soon as I get back.

I took a vacation last summer while on UC and everything went fine. Just be honest on your claim form.

I went through this same situation a few months ago and can confirm what others have said - definitely file your weekly claim even for the vacation week. I was nervous about it too, but marking "no" for being able and available during vacation days didn't cause any issues at all. The system is set up to handle this. Just make sure you have your work search activities ready to go when you get back from vacation, and you should be all set. Enjoy your trip!

I'm dealing with a similar situation right now and this thread has been super helpful! Just wanted to add that I called the PA UC office yesterday (took about 45 minutes of redialing) and the rep confirmed what everyone here is saying - always file your weekly claim even if you won't get paid. She also mentioned that if you're going on vacation, you can actually file your claim early (up to 4 days before the week ends) so you don't have to worry about internet access while you're away. This might be useful for your vacation week! Also, for reporting your part-time work, make sure you report the gross amount you earned during the week you actually worked, not when you get the paycheck.

•That's really helpful about being able to file early! I had no idea you could file up to 4 days before the week ends. That would definitely make things easier since I won't have to worry about finding good internet while I'm away. Thanks for taking the time to call and confirm all this - it's reassuring to hear it straight from a UC rep too.

Just wanted to share my experience from last year - I was in almost the exact same situation and was super anxious about it too. I ended up following the advice to file my weekly claim during vacation and honestly reported that I wasn't available to work those days. Zero issues whatsoever! The system handled it perfectly - no payment for that week, but my claim stayed active and I resumed normal filing the following week. One tip that really helped me: I actually printed out screenshots of my completed vacation week filing before I left, just in case there were any questions later (there weren't, but it gave me peace of mind). The PA UC system might be confusing, but it's definitely designed to handle vacation situations as long as you're truthful about your availability. Have a great vacation and don't stress about it - you're doing everything right by being honest and continuing to file!

•This is exactly the kind of reassurance I needed to hear! Thank you for sharing your experience and the tip about taking screenshots - that's actually really smart for peace of mind. It's so helpful to know that others have been through this exact situation without any problems. I feel much more confident now about filing honestly during my vacation week. Really appreciate everyone in this thread taking the time to help out!

I've been on UC for about 6 months now and went through this vacation situation twice - once in November and again in February. Both times I filed my weekly claim and honestly marked that I wasn't available to work during my vacation days. Got $0 for those weeks as expected, but absolutely no problems with my claim continuing afterward. One thing I learned that might help you: when you're filling out the availability questions for your vacation week, PA UC asks about each individual day. So if you're leaving Wednesday and coming back the following Tuesday, you'd mark Tuesday as available and Wed-Mon as not available. The system will still give you $0 for the week, but this level of detail shows you're being completely honest. Also, don't forget that you still need to do your work search requirements for the week you return! I made that mistake my first vacation and had to scramble to complete them retroactively. The UC office was understanding since I called right away, but it's easier to just stay on top of it. Your approach of filing truthfully is 100% correct - skipping weeks causes way more headaches than just getting a $0 payment. Enjoy your vacation!

•This is incredibly helpful - thank you for breaking down the day-by-day reporting! I hadn't thought about how to handle the specific days when I'm leaving mid-week and returning. Your explanation about marking Tuesday as available and Wed-Mon as not available makes perfect sense and shows exactly how detailed I need to be. I really appreciate you sharing your experience with two different vacation situations - it gives me confidence that this is a normal process that the system handles regularly. And good catch on the work search requirements for the return week! I'll make sure to have those ready to go. Thanks again for taking the time to share all these details!

I went through this exact situation about 8 months ago and was just as worried as you are! Here's what worked for me: I filed my weekly claim during vacation and honestly answered "no" to being available for work those days. Got $0 that week as expected, but my claim stayed perfectly active. The key thing that helped me was logging into the system the day before I left to file early (you can file up to 4 days before the week ends) so I didn't have to worry about internet access while away. When I got back, I just resumed normal filing and everything went smoothly. The PA UC system actually handles vacation weeks really well as long as you're truthful. Don't stress about it - you're doing everything right by planning to file honestly rather than skipping the week entirely!

•Thanks for sharing your experience! It's really reassuring to hear from someone who went through the same situation. Filing early before leaving sounds like a great strategy - I didn't even know that was possible until someone mentioned it earlier in this thread. It's amazing how much anxiety this whole process creates when you're new to it, but hearing from people who've actually done it successfully makes such a difference. I'm definitely going to file early and just be completely honest about my availability. Really appreciate you taking the time to share what worked for you!

I went through this same situation last fall and completely understand your anxiety! Here's what I learned: definitely file your weekly claim during vacation and honestly report that you weren't available to work those days. You'll get $0 for that week, but your claim stays active without any issues. For your current week with 5 hours of work, report those gross earnings normally - you may still get partial benefits depending on your weekly benefit amount. The most important thing is to never skip filing a week, even if you know you won't get paid. I made the mistake of not filing during a long weekend trip and it created a huge mess with my claim that took weeks to sort out. The PA UC system is actually designed to handle vacation situations smoothly as long as you're honest about your availability. Also, remember you can file up to 4 days early, so you might want to file before you leave to avoid any internet connectivity issues while you're away. Enjoy your vacation and don't stress - you're handling this exactly the right way!

•Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It's really helpful to hear from someone who went through both scenarios - the correct way of filing during vacation and the problems that come from skipping weeks. Your story about the long weekend trip creating weeks of mess is exactly what I was worried about. I'm definitely going to file early before I leave and be completely honest about my availability. It's such a relief to know that so many people have successfully navigated this situation by just being truthful with the system. I really appreciate everyone in this thread taking the time to share their experiences - it's made me feel so much more confident about handling this properly!

I went through this exact same situation about 3 months ago and was just as stressed about it! Here's what I did and it worked perfectly: I filed my weekly claim during vacation and honestly marked that I wasn't available to work those days. Got $0 for that week as expected, but my claim stayed completely active with zero issues. The key thing that really helped me was calling the UC office beforehand (it took forever to get through, but I eventually did) and they confirmed that filing truthfully during vacation is exactly what you're supposed to do - they actually said it's better to get a $0 payment than to skip filing entirely. For your 5-hour work week, just report those gross earnings normally when you file. One tip that saved me stress: I took screenshots of my vacation week filing confirmation just for my own records. The PA UC system handles vacation situations really well when you're honest about availability. Don't overthink it - you're doing everything right by planning to file truthfully!

•Thank you for sharing your experience and for actually calling to confirm with the UC office! It's really reassuring to hear directly from someone who got official confirmation that filing truthfully during vacation is the right approach. Taking screenshots of the filing confirmation is such a smart idea - I'm definitely going to do that too for my own peace of mind. It's amazing how much anxiety this process creates when you're new to it, but hearing from everyone who's successfully navigated this exact situation makes me feel so much more confident. I really appreciate you taking the time to share what worked for you!

Reading through everyone's experiences has been such a relief. It's clear that the key is to always file your weekly claim and just be completely honest about your availability, even if it means getting $0 for that week. When I first started reading through all the responses, I was honestly surprised by how consistent everyone's advice was - it really shows that filing truthfully during vacation is the standard approach that works. The tip about filing early has been mentioned by several people and I think that's going to be a game-changer for avoiding any stress about internet access while away. It's such a relief to know that the PA UC system is actually designed to handle these vacation situations smoothly when you're honest about it. I'm new to this community but have been following this thread closely as someone who's currently on PA UC and has been really anxious about these kinds of situations. This discussion has been incredibly reassuring! I love how everyone has shared their real experiences and given such consistent advice. It's clear that the golden rule is to always file your weekly claim and be completely honest about your availability, even if it means getting $0 for that week. The tips about filing early (up to 4 days before the week ends) and taking screenshots for peace of mind are brilliant. What really stands out to me is how many people have successfully handled vacation weeks without any issues by simply being truthful with the system. It seems like PA UC is actually designed to handle these situations smoothly - the problems only arise when people try to skip filing entirely. Thanks to everyone who took the time to share their experiences here. This kind of real-world advice is so much more helpful than trying to decipher the confusing UC website!

•Welcome to the community! I'm really glad this thread has been helpful for you too. It's been such a relief to see how consistent everyone's advice has been - it really shows that there's a clear, established way to handle vacation situations that actually works. What struck me most was how many people mentioned that the problems only come from trying to skip filing, never from filing truthfully and getting $0. That completely changed my perspective on this whole situation. The early filing tip has been mentioned by so many people now that I'm definitely planning to use it - such a smart way to avoid any technical stress while you're supposed to be relaxing! It's amazing how much anxiety these UC procedures can create when you're new to them, but having a community where people share real experiences makes such a huge difference. Hope your UC journey goes smoothly!

This thread has been such a lifesaver! I'm dealing with almost the exact same situation - I have a family wedding out of state next week and have been so stressed about how to handle my UC filing. Reading through everyone's experiences has completely put my mind at ease. It's incredible how consistent the advice is: always file your weekly claim and just be honest about not being available during vacation days. The fact that so many people have done this successfully without any issues really shows that the PA UC system is designed to handle these situations when you're truthful about it. I'm definitely going to use the early filing option (filing up to 4 days before the week ends) so I don't have to worry about finding good internet while I'm traveling. Thank you to everyone who shared their real experiences - this kind of practical advice is worth its weight in gold when you're navigating UC for the first time!
