PA UC saying "disqualified" after reporting new job - Will I still get my back payments?
Finally found work after 2 months of applying everywhere! I just reported my first week of work on my PA UC weekly claim and now my dashboard says "disqualified" for that week (obviously since I worked). But I've been waiting about 8 weeks now for an examiner to review my claim and I'm seriously worried about all those BACK payments I'm owed. Will I still get paid for those 8 weeks before I found work? The dashboard is confusing me because it's showing "disqualified" but that's just for the new week, right? Not retroactive? I'm getting really stressed thinking they might deny everything because I found a job. Has anyone dealt with this before? I really need that back UC money for the bills I fell behind on while waiting!

the disqualified is just for current week. keep claiming til u get a letter sayin ur claim closed. back pay is still gonna process....eventually lol. took me almost 3 months to get mine after i started working

•Thank you!! That's such a relief to hear! Did your dashboard say disqualified too when you reported work? And did you have to do anything special to make sure they processed the back payments?

The "disqualified" status only applies to the specific week you reported employment. It doesn't affect your eligibility for previous weeks when you were unemployed. Your previous weeks should still be processed, but they're in the queue waiting for examiner review. Once an examiner reviews your claim, they'll determine eligibility for those previous weeks. The fact that you found employment doesn't negatively impact your eligibility for the weeks you were unemployed and actively seeking work. Continue filing your weekly certifications and accurately report your work and earnings. You might see "disqualified" for weeks where you earn above your partial benefit threshold, but this is normal and doesn't affect prior weeks.

•Thank you for explaining! I was getting really worried. Is there anything I can do to speed up the examiner review? 8 weeks seems like forever when you're behind on bills!

SAME THING happened to me back in January!!! I waited TEN WEEKS and then found a job and the system showed "disqualified" the minute I reported income. I freaked out thinking I'd never see that money!! BUT! I did eventually get ALL my back payments about 4 weeks after I started working. The system is just terrible at explaining things. The "disqualified" only applies to weeks where you make too much money. Your previous eligible weeks are still eligible! Just be 100% sure you keep filing your weekly claims even if you're working! You have to keep certifying until they officially close your claim or you won't get those back payments!!!

•That's EXACTLY what's happening to me! Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I'll definitely keep filing until they tell me to stop. Did they notify you when your claim was officially closed?

I went through this exact situation last year. The "disqualified" status confused me too, but it only applies to the week you reported work. Here's what you need to know: 1. Keep filing weekly claims even though you're working 2. Your previous weeks still need examiner review regardless of current employment 3. Back payments will eventually be processed for eligible weeks 4. The system will automatically calculate if you're eligible for partial benefits if you're not making much at the new job The frustrating part is waiting for an examiner. Have you tried reaching out to the UC service center? Getting through to them is nearly impossible though...

•I've tried calling so many times but always get the busy signal or the "call back later" message. It's beyond frustrating. Is there some secret to getting through to an actual person?

I just went through this nightmare! I found work after waiting 12 weeks for an examiner. I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to finally get through to an actual human at PA UC. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 The agent confirmed that my back payments were still being processed despite the "disqualified" status on recent weeks. She put notes in my file to expedite the examiner review since I had been waiting so long. Got my back pay about 10 days later! Definitely worth getting through to someone rather than just waiting and stressing.

you might still be eligible for partial benefits depending on how much u make at new job. if u make less than ur weekly benefit rate + 40% u can still get something each week. most ppl dont know this

•This is correct, but the system will still show "disqualified" if your earnings exceed your partial benefit threshold. For example, if your weekly benefit amount is $400, you can earn up to $560 (WBA + 40%) and still receive some partial benefits. Above that amount, the system shows "disqualified" but it doesn't affect previous weeks.

I'm confused why ur worried? Disqualified just means u made too much money that week. Has nothing to do with your backpay. They'll still process ur old weeks eventually lol PA UC is just super slow. My friend waited like 3 months for back pay

•I'm worried because the system isn't clear at all! When you see "disqualified" it makes you think everything is denied. Plus I really need that money soon, 8 weeks is already way too long to wait!

Just to clarify for everyone: When you report earnings equal to or greater than your weekly benefit amount plus 40%, your status for that week shows as "disqualified." This is normal and doesn't affect your eligibility for previous weeks. For example, if your weekly benefit amount is $500, you can earn up to $700 (WBA + 40%) and still receive partial benefits. If you earn $701 or more, you'll be disqualified for that specific week only. The system is confusing because it doesn't distinguish between "disqualified for this week due to earnings" versus "disqualified from the program entirely." They use the same term for both situations.

•THIS!!! The PA UC system uses the WORST possible terminology! They should say "ineligible due to earnings" or something instead of "disqualified" which sounds so permanent and scary! This confuses literally EVERYONE!

forgot to mention - make sure ur still doing those stupid work search activities even tho u found a job, til they officially close ur claim. they can deny ur backpay if they think u weren't looking for work during those weeks

•Oh wait seriously? I need to keep doing job search activities even though I already found a job? That seems so pointless!

To answer your follow-up question: No, once you've secured employment, you don't need to continue job search activities. However, you DO need to continue filing your weekly certifications accurately reporting your work and earnings until your claim is officially closed. The previous commenter is confusing two different requirements. Job search activities are only required for weeks you're claiming as fully unemployed. For weeks you're working but filing for possible partial benefits, the work search requirement is satisfied by your employment.

•Thank you for clarifying! That makes much more sense. I'll keep filing but won't worry about the job search activities now that I'm working.
