Will PA UC pay my 8 weeks of benefits if I find a job? Still need to file weekly?
Hey everyone, I've been stuck in UC limbo for almost 8 weeks now with no payments. My claim shows 'eligible' but I still haven't seen a dime because of some unspecified 'open issue.' I've called literally 200+ times but can't get through to anyone. I finally have a job interview tomorrow that looks promising! My question is: If I get this job, will PA UC still pay me for these 8 weeks I've been waiting? Or do they just cancel everything once you're employed? And should I keep filing my weekly claims during this weird in-between period? If I start working, do I just report my income on those weekly certifications? Really stressed about potentially losing $4,200 that I've been counting on to catch up on bills that are now seriously overdue. Any advice appreciated!

Yes, you should absolutely keep filing your weekly claims and reporting any income you earn! PA unemployment is for weeks you were eligible, so finding a job now doesn't cancel your claim for previous weeks. The weekly claims create your record of eligibility for each week. Missing those filings can cause you to lose benefits that are rightfully yours.

•Thanks! So even after I start the new job, I should file for the weeks I was unemployed? Will they eventually pay me for all those weeks once the 'open issue' is resolved?

•That's a relief to hear! Did you have to do anything special to make sure they processed the back payments?

You NEED to keep filing your weekly claims no matter what! Even after you start working. PA UC will eventually pay you for any weeks you were eligible and properly filed for. When you file your weekly certification, you'll report any earnings for that week. Once you're earning more than your weekly benefit amount plus the partial benefit credit (about 30% on top of your weekly benefit), you won't receive benefits for that specific week, but you'll still get paid for previous eligible weeks once issues are resolved. Also important: Keep records of all your job search activities for each week. PA requires you to complete and document work search activities - at least 2 per week (applying for jobs, attending interviews, etc.).

•this isn't totally right... u only need to do those job searches if ur on regular UC. if ur on some other program like TRA the rules are different just fyi

Try using Claimyr to get through to an actual human at PA UC! I was in a similar situation - waited 7 weeks with zero payments because of some mysterious issue. I tried calling hundreds of times and always got the busy signal. Then I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to a UC rep in like 20 minutes. They have this video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2. The woman I spoke to was able to see my open issue was just a verification problem and fixed it on the spot. Got paid for all my back weeks 3 days later.

•I haven't heard of this before! I'll check it out because at this point I'm desperate to reach someone. Need to get this sorted before I potentially start this new job.

THE UC SYSTEM IS A COMPLETE DISASTER!!! I had an "open issue" for 11 WEEKS before I finally got my money. They don't care that people have bills to pay!!! I had to file a complaint with my state rep's office to get ANYONE to look at my claim. And YES - keep filing weekly!!! That's the only way to get your money eventually. Don't let them off the hook just because you find work!!

Make sure when u file the weekly claims after u start working that u put in the exact amount u earned for that week not what u expect to earn. i made that mistake and had to do an appeal cause they said i commited fraud but it was just me estimating. they want the actual pay for work done that week even if u havent been paid yet.

•Whoa, I definitely wouldn't have known that. So you report the wages you EARNED that week, not what was actually deposited in your bank account?

To clarify on reporting earnings: You need to report what you EARNED in a given week, not when you got paid. So if you work Monday-Friday but don't get paid until the following Friday, you still report those earnings for the week you actually performed the work. Also, when you report gross earnings (before taxes), if they exceed your weekly benefit amount plus the partial benefit credit (usually around 30% extra), you won't receive benefits for that specific week. But this doesn't affect your eligibility for previous weeks where you weren't working. And yes, once your open issue is resolved, they will pay all back weeks you were eligible for and properly filed your weekly certifications. The money doesn't disappear just because you found a job.

•Thank you for explaining this so clearly. I think I understand the system better now. I'm going to keep filing my weekly claims and hopefully resolve this open issue so I can get those back payments.

To summarize what everyone is saying: 1. KEEP filing your weekly claims even after you start working 2. Report your work and earnings accurately (what you EARNED that week, not what you got paid) 3. Continue filing until your issues are resolved and you get your back pay 4. Try to reach PA UC either through normal channels, Claimyr, or contacting your state representative if needed You're absolutely entitled to benefits for the weeks you were eligible and properly filed claims. Finding a job doesn't erase that eligibility. Good luck with your interview!

•Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice! I'll keep filing my weekly claims and make sure to report any income correctly. I'll try using Claimyr to talk to someone about my open issue too. Fingers crossed I get the job AND my back pay eventually!
