PA UC appeal hearing decision taking over a month - normal wait time?
I had my PA unemployment appeal hearing by phone about 4 weeks ago and still haven't received a decision. The referee said it would be mailed within 7-10 days, but it's been way longer than that. When I check my dashboard, the decision status still shows 'N/A'. This waiting is driving me crazy since I've got bills piling up. Anyone gone through an appeal process recently? How long did you have to wait for your decision letter after the hearing? I'm wondering if I should call or if this is just the normal timeline these days.

•Six weeks?? That's ridiculous. Did calling them actually help speed things up, or was it just a waste of time?

Unfortunately, the appeals process is experiencing significant delays in 2025. While the referee is correct that decisions are typically issued within 7-10 business days, the current backlog has extended wait times to 4-6 weeks in many cases. The most important thing is to keep filing your weekly claims during this time, even though you won't receive payments until (and unless) your appeal is approved. The dashboard won't update until the decision is finalized and entered into the system.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation. I've definitely been keeping up with my weekly claims, but it's tough going this long without any income. I guess I'll just have to be patient a bit longer.

This is EXACTLY why the PA UC system is a complete DISASTER!!! They expect us to wait MONTHS for decisions while our bills pile up and we can't pay rent!!! Then they wonder why people get evicted or have their utilities shut off. I had to wait 7 WEEKS for my appeal decision last year and nobody could tell me anything when I called. The system is BROKEN and nobody in Harrisburg cares!!!

•I get your frustration but my cousin works for UC and says they're really understaffed right now. Not saying its right but they're trying

when i had my appeal hearing the lady said something bout how the referee has to write up a full report with all the facts and reasoning which takes time... also said they have tons of backlog cases... mine took about 5 weeks but i won my appeal so worth the wait i guess

•That makes sense, I guess. Did you do anything while waiting, or just check the mail every day hoping for good news?

After my appeal hearing back in January, I waited nearly 5 weeks with no decision. I was getting desperate since I had rent coming due. I tried calling the regular UC number for days and couldn't get through. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to connect with an agent. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 The agent was able to see that my decision had actually been made but was sitting in the queue waiting to be mailed. They escalated it and I got my decision letter 3 days later (approved thankfully). Might be worth trying if you're getting close to some financial deadlines.

•I hadn't heard of that service before - thanks for the tip! If I don't hear anything by the end of next week I'll definitely check it out. Getting desperate at this point.

The current timeframe for appeal decisions is indeed longer than what's officially stated. Based on recent cases I've seen (I help people with UC issues), the average wait time is now 4-8 weeks for telephone hearings. This varies based on the complexity of your case and the referee's current caseload. A few important points to remember while waiting: 1. Continue filing your weekly claims without fail 2. Check both your online dashboard AND your postal mail (sometimes decisions arrive by mail before the system updates) 3. If you have an attorney or representative, they may be able to make inquiries on your behalf 4. If you're approaching 6+ weeks, you can request a status update through the messaging center in your dashboard The good news is that if your appeal is approved, you'll receive back payments for all eligible weeks you properly claimed during the waiting period.

•THIS is the problem right here! The "official" timeframe is a LIE and they KNOW IT! Why don't they just be HONEST about how long it really takes instead of telling people 7-10 days when it's REALLY 4-8 WEEKS?!? It's all about keeping people in the dark!

•Thanks for this detailed information. This is really helpful. I've been filing my weekly claims but was starting to wonder if I was doing something wrong or if my case had fallen through the cracks. I'll keep waiting for now, but it's good to know I can request a status update if it goes much longer.

UPDATE: Got my decision letter today - APPROVED! It took exactly 5 weeks and 2 days after my hearing. Thanks everyone for your advice and support during the wait. The letter says I should see payments within 7-10 business days for all my back weeks. Such a relief!

•Great news! Make sure to continue filing your weekly claims until the payments start arriving. Sometimes there can be a delay between approval and actual payment processing.
