PA UC appeal 'decision being written' status - do I still need to attend referee hearing?
I filed an appeal for my denied PA unemployment claim about 5 weeks ago. When I check my dashboard now, it says 'decision being written' under the appeal status. Does this mean I don't have to attend a referee hearing anymore? I was expecting to get a hearing notice with a date and time, but now I'm confused about what this status means. Has anyone seen this before? I'm worried I might have missed something important or that they made a decision without letting me present my case.

If your appeal status shows 'decision being written,' it typically means the referee has already made a determination and is now preparing the written decision. This usually happens AFTER a hearing has taken place. Double-check your mail and email - you may have missed the hearing notice. You might want to call the UC service center ASAP to clarify what's happening with your case.

•Oh no! I never received any notice about a hearing date. Does this mean they made a decision without me? I've been checking my mail religiously and there was nothing about a hearing date. Will they rule against me automatically since I wasn't there to present my side?

THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME!!! They never sent me any hearing notice and suddenly it said decision being written!!! I called for THREE DAYS straight before getting through and found out they scheduled my hearing but sent the notice to my old address even though I updated my info online. They told me I could request a new hearing because of the notification error but it was a HUGE PAIN!!! The system is completely broken!!!!

•That's exactly what I'm afraid of! Did you end up getting a new hearing? How long did that process take?

There are a few possibilities here: 1. You may have had a hearing scheduled that you weren't notified about (happens sometimes due to mail issues) 2. Your appeal might have been decided on the record without a hearing (rare but possible in certain cases) 3. There could be a system error showing the wrong status You need to contact the UC Service Center immediately to clarify your situation. If you missed a hearing due to lack of notice, you can request a new hearing by showing you never received proper notification.

•My cousin works for the UC office and she says they're super behind on everything right now. Could just be that the system updated wrong. Definitely call though cuz better safe than sorry!

After struggling with busy signals for days trying to reach PA unemployment, I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to a rep in about 20 minutes. They confirmed I had missed my hearing due to a notification error and helped me file for a new hearing on the spot. They have a demo video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 - honestly saved me weeks of stress and uncertainty. The agent I spoke with was actually helpful once I finally got through.

•Thank you for the suggestion! I'm going to try this right away. I've been calling constantly with no luck getting through. Did they give you any trouble about requesting a new hearing?

hey so if ur seeing 'decision being written' its probably too late for a hearing cuz that means they already heard the case but u should definetly call to make sure. sometimes they do 'paper hearings' where they just review the documents if its a simple case. had that happen to my gf last year.

•This is incorrect information. PA UC doesn't automatically do 'paper hearings' without informing claimants. Every appellant has the right to present their case. If the decision is being written without a hearing being held, it's almost certainly an error or notification issue.

I went through the appeal process last month. You should have received a hearing notice at least 10 days before the scheduled date. Mine came both in the mail and in my UC dashboard messages. Check your dashboard messages section too! If you truly didn't receive notification, call immediately and explain - they are required to give you an opportunity to present your case before making a decision.

•I just checked all my dashboard messages again and there's nothing about a hearing date. I'm definitely calling first thing tomorrow. I'm just worried they'll say it's too late to do anything since the decision is already being written.

Just to update you on timing expectations - if you do need to request a new hearing due to lack of notice, the process typically takes 2-3 weeks for them to review your request and potentially reschedule. Make sure to emphasize that you never received ANY notification (mail, email, or dashboard message) about the original hearing. Document the date and time of your call and the name of the representative you speak with. If they deny your request for a new hearing, you can appeal that denial as well.

•Thank you, this is really helpful. I'm going to document everything and call tomorrow. Will update here with what happens in case it helps someone else in the future.

After using Claimyr to reach a UC representative yesterday, I found out what happened. They had sent a hearing notice scheduling a phone hearing, but it was sent to my old address despite my updated contact information being in the system. The representative helped me file for a new hearing based on lack of proper notification. The decision status has been reset to 'pending' now, and I should receive proper notification for the rescheduled hearing within 2 weeks. Thank you everyone for your help and suggestions!

Wait, I'm confused - I think there might be some mixed up information here. The update about using Claimyr and getting the hearing rescheduled was posted by Hiroshi Nakamura, but the original post asking for help was from GamerGirl99. Did GamerGirl99 get her issue resolved too, or is this someone else's experience? Just want to make sure we're tracking the right person's situation since this is such an important issue!

•Good catch! I noticed that mix-up too. It looks like Hiroshi was sharing his own similar experience to help GamerGirl99, but it's confusing because he posted it as if it was an update to her situation. @GamerGirl99 - are you still waiting to call about your case, or did you also get through and get it resolved? Would be helpful to know if you're still needing to make that call or if you've had any updates on your end!
