PA UC appeal hearing timeline - will I wait months for a decision?

Filed an appeal for my PA unemployment denial last week and I'm freaking out about how long this might take. My benefits stopped completely and I'm already behind on rent. Has anyone gone through the appeal process recently? What's the typical timeline from filing to actually getting a hearing date? And then how long after the hearing until they make a decision? My rent is due again in 3 weeks and I'm seriously stressing about this delay.

it depends on ur reason for appeal tbh. mine took almost 7 weeks just to get a hearing date cuz they're backed up rn. but my cousin got his hearing in like 3 weeks for a different type of issue.

7 WEEKS?? Omg I can't wait that long! Did they tell you there was a backlog when you filed? I didn't get any info about expected wait times.

The appeal process typically takes 4-6 weeks to get a hearing scheduled, then another 1-2 weeks for a decision after the hearing. It varies based on how busy they are and the complexity of your case. Make sure you've gathered all your documentation now - pay stubs, termination notice, communications with your employer, etc. Being prepared speeds things up once you get to the hearing.

Thank you for the timeline. Do you know if there's any way to request an expedited hearing? My situation is getting desperate pretty quickly.

I went through an appeal last November. Here's what to expect: 1. You should receive an acknowledgment letter with your appeal number within 7-10 days 2. Hearing notice comes about 3-5 weeks after filing (but can be longer) 3. Hearings are usually scheduled 2-3 weeks after you get the notice 4. Decision comes 7-14 days after your hearing So total timeframe is usually 6-10 weeks from filing to decision. While waiting, connect with local assistance programs for rent help. Try 211 for resources.

This is good advice. Also worth noting that the first heating notice might come by regular mail, so check your mailbox daily! I missed mine and had to scramble to get it rescheduled which added another 3 weeks to my timeline ugh

THE APPEAL PROCESS IS DELIBERATELY SLOW TO FRUSTRATE CLAIMANTS!!!!! They WANT you to give up!!!! I waited 8 WEEKS for my hearing and another 3 for a decision. Then they STILL denied me even with ALL my evidence!!! The system is BROKEN!!!!

Same experience here. Everything takes forever and feels designed to wear you down. I just gave up after my first appeal denial and found odd jobs to get by.

Are you still able to file your weekly claims during the appeal process? You should continue doing so, even though you won't get paid right away. If you win your appeal, they'll pay you retroactively for all those weeks. But if you stop certifying, you won't get paid for those weeks even if you win.

I didn't know this! Thank you - I thought there was no point in filing weekly claims during the appeal. I'll make sure to keep doing that.

I tried calling PA UC everyday for 2 weeks about my appeal status and NEVER got through. Just busy signals or getting disconnected after waiting on hold forever. Then I found this service called Claimyr that got me connected to a rep in about 20 minutes. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 that shows how it works. The rep was able to tell me exactly where my appeal was in the process and gave me a better timeline. Worth checking out if you're desperate for answers.

is that service legit? seems sketchy that you gotta pay just to talk to unemployment...

It worked for me when I couldn't get through for weeks. I was desperate and it was worth it to finally get some answers about my claim. The rep told me my appeal had been assigned to a referee but wasn't scheduled yet, which at least gave me something to go on.

To answer your question about expedited hearings - yes, PA UC does have a process for financial hardship expedite requests, but you need to document your situation. Call and specifically ask for a "financial hardship expedite form" for your appeal. You'll need to provide proof of your urgent financial situation (eviction notice, utility shut-off notices, etc.). Not guaranteed, but worth trying.

That's really helpful info. I'll try to get one of those forms right away. My landlord just gave me a warning letter about the late rent so maybe I can use that.

my appeal only took like 3 weeks but that was back in february so maybe its worse now? good luck! the hearing itself was actually pretty quick, like 30 minutes on the phone with a referee person. make sure u have all ur stuff ready to explain!

I recommend preparing a one-page outline of your case with dates and key points. The referee will appreciate a clear timeline. Also, practice explaining your situation concisely. Focus on facts rather than emotions during the hearing. If your employer will be at the hearing (they're invited), be prepared to respond to their statements professionally. The more organized you are, the faster things tend to move.

This is excellent advice. I'll start putting together my timeline right away so I'm ready when the hearing gets scheduled. Thank you so much for the help!
