Identity theft alert: PA UC benefits being claimed under husband's union carpenter account - what to do?

Just discovered something really alarming - my husband's PA unemployment account shows weekly claims filed throughout the entire summer, but he's been working this whole time! He's in the carpenters union and hasn't been laid off since March 2025 (his last unemployment period). Someone has clearly hacked his account and has been filing false claims for months. The payment history shows several weekly payments already processed! Has anyone else in the trades (especially union workers) experienced this kind of unemployment fraud? What's the fastest way to report this? I tried calling but can't get through to a real person. Do we need to file a police report? So stressed about potential repercussions if we don't handle this correctly!

Definetly call the PA UC fraud hotline ASAP at 1-800-692-7292. This happend to my brother last spring, also union worker. They might be targeting trade workers who go on/off UC regularly. His account got hacked and someone filed for like 8 weeks! The UC system is so messed up they just keep paying without checking if the person is actually unemployed!!

Thanks for responding so quickly. Did your brother have any issues with the IRS or tax problems because of this? That's what I'm really worried about - that my husband will get a 1099 for benefits he never received and we'll be stuck with that tax mess.

This is definitely identity theft and unemployment fraud. You need to take several steps immediately: 1. Report the fraud to PA UC through their online portal AND by calling the fraud hotline 2. Change all account passwords and PINs 3. Place a freeze on your husband's credit reports with all three bureaus 4. File an identity theft report with the FTC at identitytheft.gov 5. File a police report with your local department 6. Contact your husband's employer and union to document that he's been employed Keep detailed records of all communications and report numbers. The UC office will investigate and eventually clear your husband's record, but it can take several months.

I've been through this nightmare!!! My account was hacked last year and they filed for 14 WEEKS before I found out. The UC system is COMPLETELY BROKEN and doesn't verify employment status AT ALL!!!! Had to fight for 6 months to clear my name, meanwhile they froze MY REAL BENEFITS when I actually got laid off during all this. The system is designed to FAIL HONEST PEOPLE!!!!!

Oh no, that sounds horrible! Did you eventually get everything sorted out? We're worried this might affect future claims if/when my husband actually needs unemployment benefits during the slow season.

Had this same thing happen to me (electrician's union) back in February. What worked for me was using Claimyr to get through to a real PA UC agent instead of waiting weeks for them to respond to messages. You can see how it works in their video: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 The key is reporting it fast and getting an actual fraud case opened. The agent I spoke with flagged my account immediately to prevent further fraudulent claims and helped me start the resolution process. Without getting someone on the phone, this would have dragged on much longer.

does this claimyr thing actully work? ive been trying to call unemployment for 3 weeks about a completley different issue and cant get anyone

Yes, it worked for me. Got through in about 30 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. For fraud cases especially, you really need to talk to someone directly rather than waiting for email responses that take forever.

I work for a credit union and we're seeing a huge spike in UC fraud cases targeting trade union members specifically. They seem to know which unions have regular layoff patterns and target those accounts. Definitely follow the steps mentioned above, but also notify your husband's union - several unions are starting to track these cases and work with state agencies to improve security.

That's really helpful information. I'll definitely have him talk to his union rep tomorrow. It makes sense they'd target trades with regular unemployment patterns. Makes me wonder if there's a data breach somewhere in the system.

dont forget to check ur email filters too! sometimes the hackers set up filters to hide the uc notifications so u dont see the weekly claim confirmations. my cousin had this happen and the emails were all going to spam for months before he noticed

This is excellent advice that often gets overlooked. The fraudsters often set up email rules or filters to hide UC notifications. Check all email folders and review account settings for any unauthorized changes.

hey i had something sorta simular happen but it was my ex who knew my ssn filing on my account. do u think it could be someone who knows ur husband? just a thought bc they would need his ssn and probly his PIN too

I hadn't considered that angle... I don't think it's someone we know personally, but you're right that they'd need his personal info. I'm wondering if there was a data breach somewhere. He did have to submit some documents to the union hall recently for certification renewal.

Just to update everyone on the latest fraud prevention measures: PA UC has recently implemented enhanced ID verification through ID.me for suspected fraud cases. If your husband contacts them about this issue, they will likely require him to verify his identity through this system before proceeding with the fraud investigation. This is actually helpful in these cases since it establishes a secure identity verification. Also, request that they issue you a fraud investigation case number - this will be crucial for following up and for tax purposes if you receive an incorrect 1099-G.

Thank you so much for this information! We'll definitely ask for a case number when we report it. Is the ID.me verification something we can do proactively or do we need to wait for them to request it?

You can actually set up the ID.me verification proactively through the PA UC portal. Look for the identity verification section. Having this already completed will speed up the process when you speak with a representative.

ALSO dont forget that they might have changed the banking info for the direct deposits!!! You need to specifically ask the UC office WHERE the fraudulent payments were sent so you can include that in your police report!!!

That's a really good point! I'll definitely ask about that. I hadn't even thought to check if the payment information was changed.

Any update?? Did you get through to someone? My brothers case took almost 2 months to resolve but at least they stopped the payments right away when he reported it

We used that Claimyr service someone mentioned above and actually got through yesterday! They've flagged the account for fraud investigation and locked it from further claims. Now we're gathering all the employment documentation to prove he was working during those weeks. They said it could take 6-8 weeks to fully resolve but at least the bleeding has stopped. Thanks everyone for all your help!
