How to set up PA UC overpayment payment plan online instead of mailing checks?
I just got hit with a $4,200 overpayment notice from PA Unemployment for benefits I received back in 2023. They're saying I didn't report some income correctly, which is frustrating but whatever. The thing is, they want me to either pay it all at once (impossible!) or mail in monthly payments with those paper vouchers. I absolutely do not trust sending checks through mail these days - my neighbor had her mail stolen twice last month. Plus I do everything else online, so why can't I set up a payment plan through the PA UC portal? I haven't been on regular UC for over a year, so they can't just take it from my weekly benefits. Is there any way to set up automatic payments or at least pay online? The notice mentions something about a "repayment portal" but I can't find it anywhere on the website. Any help appreciated!

I dealt with this same situation last winter. You CAN set up online payments, but it's weirdly hidden in the system. Log into your PA UC account, then go to 'Overpayment' under the Services menu. There should be a 'Repayment Options' button on the lower right side of that page. From there, you can set up either a payment plan or make one-time payments through the Treasury Direct Pay system. They accept debit cards and bank accounts, no credit cards though.

•Thanks! I looked everywhere but didn't see that option. I'll check when I get home tonight. Did you have to call and talk to someone first or was it all automated online?

•That's actually terrible advice. Ignoring overpayment notices doesn't make them go away. The state can and will garnish wages, intercept tax refunds, place liens on property, and even file civil judgments against you that follow you across state lines. Plus, they add interest and penalties the longer you wait.

I had LITERALLY the EXACT SAME PROBLEM last month!! The PA UC system is GARBAGE when it comes to overpayments!! I spent TWO HOURS clicking through every stupid link on their stupid website and NEVER found any online payment option!! Called the number and got disconnected FOUR TIMES!!! This system is DESIGNED to make us fail so they can charge more penalties!!!!

•I feel your pain! When I got my overpayment notice, I was so overwhelmed I just broke down crying. It's so scary to owe money you don't have and not know how to fix it. Did you ever get it resolved?

To clarify some confusion here - there are actually two different payment systems depending on what type of overpayment you have. 1. For regular UC overpayments: You use the Treasury Direct Pay system through your dashboard. 2. For pandemic program overpayments (like PUA): Those are handled through a separate portal at www.dlipuaportal.pa.gov where you can set up payment plans. Look at your overpayment notice - it should specifically say which type you have and direct you to the correct system. If it just says "UC overpayment" without mentioning PUA, then you'll use the regular system.

•This makes so much sense! My notice does mention it was from the pandemic period but doesn't specifically say PUA. I'll check both portals. Really appreciate the detailed explanation.

I had to deal with this last year and ended up just mailing the payments because the online system kept giving me errors. Make sure if you mail payments you get delivery confirmation and take pictures of the checks before sending them. I had one payment "lost" and they tried to charge me a late fee even though I had proof I sent it.

•OMG this is EXACTLY what I'm afraid of!!! They'll "lose" the payment and then charge more fees and interest!! The whole system is rigged against us!!!

I went through this nightmare last month trying to set up payments for a $5,200 overpayment. After getting nowhere with the website, I tried calling the UC service center for days and couldn't get through - constant busy signals or disconnects. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to a live person at PA UC. They have this system where they keep calling for you and get you in line with a rep. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 The UC rep walked me through the whole process and even helped me negotiate a lower monthly payment than what was initially required. Totally worth it after wasting a week trying to do it myself.

I'm dealing with the same thing right now! I'm so worried because I literally cannot afford to pay back $3,000 all at once. Does anyone know if they'll accept a payment plan of just $50 a month? That's honestly all I can afford right now with rent and groceries going up so much. Will they deny a payment plan if the monthly amount is too low??

•They will work with you on the payment amount. The standard minimum is $100/month, but if you can document financial hardship, they can go as low as $25/month. You'll need to submit their Financial Statement form (UC-1766) showing your income and expenses. Submit it with your initial payment plan request.

Update: I finally figured it out! For anyone else dealing with this - the problem was I was trying to access the payment system through my regular UC portal, but since my overpayment was from the pandemic period, I needed to use the separate PUA portal like @helpful_person mentioned. The direct link is www.dlipuaportal.pa.gov and you need your PUA claim number (different from regular UC number). Once in there, go to Overpayments then Payment Plans. It lets you set up automatic monthly payments from a bank account. Such a relief to have this sorted! Thanks everyone for your help.

•Great to hear you got it sorted out! Make sure you keep confirmation emails of all your payments in case there are any disputes later. Screenshots of payment confirmations have saved me more than once.
