PA UC non-fault overpayment - Can I set up monthly repayment plan?

Just got hit with a $2,800 non-fault overpayment notice from PA unemployment. The letter says I didn't report some wages correctly, but honestly I thought I did everything right. Can't afford to pay this all at once - does anyone know if I can set up a monthly payment plan? How much do they usually let you pay per month? I'm working now but barely making ends meet after being laid off for so long. Really stressed about this unexpected bill!

Yes, you can absolutely set up a monthly payment plan for non-fault overpayments. Call the UC Service Center and ask specifically for the overpayment department. They'll work with you based on your current financial situation. I had a $1,600 overpayment last year and they let me pay $100/month. Just make sure you get everything in writing once you agree on an amount.

Thank you so much! Did they ask for any proof of income or expenses when setting up your payment plan? I'm wondering how much paperwork I need to gather before calling.

Oh god that sounds terrible. I definitely need to get on this right away. Did you manage to negotiate a lower amount?

Since it's a non-fault overpayment, you have several options: 1. Monthly payment plan - they'll typically work with what you can afford (usually $50-200/month depending on your situation) 2. Request a waiver if you can prove financial hardship 3. Appeal the overpayment if you believe it was incorrectly determined Make sure you respond to the notice within 15 days or they might start automatic collection processes. The most important thing is to communicate with them rather than ignore it.

Thank you for laying out all the options! I didn't know about the waiver possibility. The 15-day deadline is really helpful to know - my notice is dated last week so I need to act fast.

I had similar situation but mine was $3200. They let me do $75/month payments. Just be polite when you call and explain your situation. They're usually pretty reasonable with non-fault overpayments since they know you didn't try to cheat the system.

this is key - BE NICE when u call. if u go in angry they wont help u. i learned this hard way lol

Good luck ever reaching anyone at PA UC! I tried calling for THREE WEEKS about my overpayment and kept getting busy signals or disconnected. Complete nightmare. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to someone in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2. Seriously saved my sanity after days of trying to get through on my own.

Does this actually work? I've been trying to get through to UC for days about my payment plan and keep getting nowhere. I'm about to lose my mind with the constant busy signals.

Yeah it definitely worked for me! Got connected to an actual person who helped set up my payment plan. Worth it to not spend weeks trying to get through.

One more important tip - if you set up a payment plan, make sure you never miss a payment. If you do, they can cancel the whole arrangement and demand the full amount. If your situation changes and you can't make a payment, call them BEFORE the due date to adjust the plan.

That's really good to know. I'll make sure to set up automatic payments if possible so I don't accidentally miss any. Thanks for the warning!

Has anyone had success getting a waiver? My mom got a non-fault overpayment for $4100 and she's on fixed income (disability). Wondering if that qualifies for hardship waiver??

Fixed income situations like disability often do qualify for hardship waivers, especially for non-fault overpayments. She should definitely apply for the waiver and provide documentation of her disability income and monthly expenses. The form is available on the PA UC website under "Overpayment Information.

Update: I called today (after trying for 2 days straight) and finally got through! They approved me for a $90/month payment plan based on my current income. They didn't even ask for documentation, just asked about my monthly expenses and income. Thanks everyone for the advice - such a relief to have this figured out!

That's awesome news! So glad you got it sorted out. $90/month sounds very reasonable for a $2,800 overpayment. Did they give you any specific timeline for when the payments need to be completed, or is it just until it's paid off?

Congratulations on getting through and setting up the payment plan! That's a huge weight off your shoulders. Quick question - did they mention anything about interest or penalties on the monthly payments? I'm dealing with a similar situation and wondering if the balance grows while you're paying it off.

That's such great news! Really happy you got it resolved. For anyone else reading this - it sounds like persistence with calling really does pay off, even though it took a couple days to get through. $90/month seems very manageable for your situation. Did they give you any paperwork or confirmation number for the payment plan agreement?

That's fantastic news! So relieved to hear you got it worked out. Quick question - when you set up the payment plan, did they give you the option to pay online or do you have to mail checks each month? I'm hoping to avoid the hassle of remembering to mail payments if I end up in a similar situation.
