When does NYS Department of Labor send out W2 forms for unemployment benefits?
I received unemployment benefits for about 6 months last year and I'm trying to file my taxes but haven't gotten my W2 from NYS Department of Labor yet. When do they usually mail these out? I know I need the 1099-G form but I thought there was also a W2. Should I be worried that I haven't received anything yet? My regular job W2 came weeks ago.

Actually unemployment benefits don't come with a W2 - you'll get a 1099-G form instead. NYS Department of Labor usually sends these out by the end of January. The 1099-G shows how much you received in unemployment compensation for the tax year. You can also download it from your my.ny.gov account if you don't want to wait for the mail.

•Oh wow I had no idea! So there's no W2 at all for unemployment? I was really confused about that. Thanks for clearing it up!

The 1099-G is what you need for your tax return. It will show the total unemployment compensation you received and any federal taxes that were withheld if you chose to have them taken out. If you can't find it or it gets lost in the mail, you can always log into your my.ny.gov account and download a copy from the NYS Department of Labor portal.

•This is really helpful! I didn't know you could download it online. I've been waiting for mine in the mail but maybe I should just check my account instead.

If you're having trouble accessing your online account or getting through to NYS Department of Labor by phone, I actually used a service called Claimyr that helped me get connected to an agent really quickly. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Really saved me from sitting on hold forever when I needed to sort out my 1099-G issue last year.

•interesting, never heard of that service before. might be worth checking out if the phone lines are still as crazy as they were during the pandemic

just wanted to add that unemployment benefits ARE taxable income so make sure you report everything on your 1099-G when you file. i made the mistake of thinking it wasn't taxable my first time and had to file an amended return
