Does NYS Department of Labor unemployment send a W2 for tax filing?
I received unemployment benefits for about 6 months last year and now I'm trying to file my taxes. I'm looking everywhere for a W2 from NYS Department of Labor but can't find one. Do they send W2s for unemployment payments or is there a different form I should be looking for? I'm getting confused because my regular job sent me a W2 but nothing from unemployment yet.

NYS Department of Labor doesn't send W2s for unemployment benefits. You'll receive a 1099-G form instead, which shows the total amount of unemployment compensation you received during the tax year. This should have been mailed to you by January 31st. You can also access it online through your my.ny.gov account.

•Oh thank you! I was looking for the wrong form completely. Let me check my my.ny.gov account right now.

•How did you check if the amount was correct? I want to make sure mine matches what I actually received.

If you haven't received your 1099-G yet, you can request a duplicate through the NYS Department of Labor website. Sometimes they get lost in the mail or sent to an old address. The form will show your total benefits and any federal taxes that were withheld if you chose to have taxes taken out.

•I did have taxes withheld! So that should show up on the 1099-G too? That's really helpful to know.

I'm in the same boat - been waiting for my 1099-G and getting really anxious about filing my taxes on time. Does anyone know if there's a phone number to call about missing tax forms? The regular NYS Department of Labor number is always busy and I can never get through to talk to anyone about this.

•I had the same problem last month trying to reach someone at NYS Department of Labor about my claim status. Couldn't get through for weeks. A friend told me about this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get connected to unemployment agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. I used it and actually got through to someone who helped me with my 1099-G issue the same day.

Just wanted to add that unemployment benefits ARE taxable income, so make sure you report the full amount from your 1099-G on your tax return. A lot of people don't realize this and get surprised later.
