What does job separation mean on NYS Department of Labor unemployment application?
I'm filling out my unemployment application and there's a section asking about 'job separation' but I'm not sure what they're looking for exactly. I was laid off from my retail job last month due to store closure, but the form seems to want more details about the separation. Do I just put 'laid off' or is there something more specific they need? Also worried I might mess this up and delay my claim.

Job separation basically means how your employment ended. Since you were laid off due to store closure, that's exactly what you should put. The NYS Department of Labor needs to know if you were fired for misconduct, quit voluntarily, laid off, or terminated for other reasons. Your situation sounds like a standard layoff which should qualify you for benefits.

•Thanks! Should I mention the store closure specifically or just say laid off?

Be as specific as possible about the job separation. I put 'laid off due to business closure' when my company shut down and it helped my claim get processed faster. The more details you give upfront, the less likely they'll need to do adjudication later.

•This is good advice. I was vague about my separation and ended up in adjudication for weeks while they investigated.

•You can still potentially get benefits if you quit for good cause, but it's much harder to prove than a layoff. Things like unsafe working conditions or harassment might qualify.

I had trouble reaching anyone at NYS Department of Labor when my job separation was questioned during adjudication. Ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me through to a real person. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me weeks of trying to call myself.

•Did that actually work? I've been trying to get through for days about my separation issue.

•Yeah it really did! Got connected within a few hours instead of the endless busy signals.

job separation is just bureaucratic nonsense. they make everything so complicated when really they just want to know if you got fired or not
