What does fact-finding mean on NYS Department of Labor unemployment claim?
My claim status just changed to 'fact-finding' and I have no idea what this means. I've been getting my weekly payments for about 6 weeks and everything seemed fine. Now when I log into my.ny.gov it shows this status and I'm freaking out. Did I do something wrong? Will my payments stop? The website doesn't explain what fact-finding actually means or how long it takes.

Fact-finding is when NYS Department of Labor needs to investigate something about your claim before they can continue processing payments. It's not necessarily bad - they might just need to verify your work history, wages, or circumstances around your job separation. Common triggers include employer protests, wage discrepancies, or if you reported work during a week.

•Oh no, my employer might have protested? They weren't happy when I left but I thought everything was settled. How long does this usually take?

I went through fact-finding last year when my old job claimed I quit instead of being laid off. They sent me forms to fill out explaining my side of the story. The whole process took about 3 weeks but I eventually got all my back payments once they determined I was eligible. Check your messages on the portal - they probably sent you paperwork to complete.

•I'll check my messages right now. I hope it's something simple like wage verification and not a big dispute.

If you're having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor about your fact-finding case, I used claimyr.com to get through to an actual person. They have this system that calls the unemployment office for you and gets you connected to an agent. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. I was able to get updates on my case status that way when the online portal wasn't showing details.

•That sounds too good to be true. How much does something like that cost?

•I was skeptical too but it actually worked. The main thing is it saves you from spending hours trying to get through the busy phone lines. Worth checking out if you're stuck.

FACT FINDING = GUILTY UNTIL PROVEN INNOCENT. They'll find any excuse to deny your claim and make you jump through hoops. I've been waiting 2 months for them to resolve mine and still nothing. The whole system is designed to discourage people from claiming benefits they're entitled to!!!

•That's not entirely accurate. While fact-finding can be stressful, it's a normal part of the process when there are questions about eligibility. Most cases are resolved in favor of the claimant if they provide the requested documentation promptly.

same thing happened to me but it was just because I had two part time jobs and they needed to verify which one I lost benefits for. filled out the forms and was back to normal in like 10 days

Don't panic yet! Fact-finding just means they need more information. The key is to respond to any requests for documentation as quickly as possible. Keep copies of everything you submit and check your account daily for updates. Most fact-finding investigations are routine verification processes, not fraud investigations.
