Why is my Washington ESD unemployment under fact finding - what does this mean?
My unemployment claim has been showing 'fact finding' status for over 2 weeks now and I have no idea what this means or how long it's supposed to take. I filed my initial claim about a month ago and everything seemed fine until this showed up. I haven't received any letters or notifications telling me what they need from me. Has anyone else dealt with this? I'm starting to panic because I need these benefits to pay rent.

Fact finding means Washington ESD is investigating something about your claim - could be employment separation, wages, or eligibility. They should have sent you a letter explaining what information they need. Check your SecureAccess Washington account for any pending issues.

•I've checked my SAW account multiple times and there's nothing there asking for additional info. Should I be worried they lost my paperwork or something?

•Not necessarily lost, but sometimes the system doesn't update right away. The fact finding process can take 3-6 weeks depending on complexity.

Same thing happened to me last year! Took almost a month before they told me they needed verification from my previous employer. The waiting is the worst part because you don't know what's going on.

•Did you ever figure out how to contact someone to find out what was happening? I keep trying to call but can never get through.

•I had this exact problem trying to reach Washington ESD during my fact finding period. Spent hours calling and getting nowhere. Then I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to an agent in like 10 minutes. They have this demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works - basically they handle all the calling and waiting for you.

fact finding usually means they're verifying your job separation or wages. did you quit or were you fired? that makes a difference in how long it takes

•I was laid off due to company downsizing, so it should be pretty straightforward. That's why I'm confused about why this is taking so long.

•even layoffs need verification sometimes. they probably contacted your employer and are waiting for a response

The fact finding process is RIDICULOUS. They leave you hanging with zero communication and expect you to just wait around indefinitely. I went through this nightmare last spring and it took 5 weeks before anyone bothered to tell me what they actually needed. The whole system is broken!

•I feel your frustration but getting angry doesn't help solve the problem. The system is overwhelmed but there are ways to get answers.

•Easy for you to say when you're not the one stressed about paying bills while waiting for Washington ESD to get their act together.

Check if there's a separation issue on your claim. Sometimes employers dispute the reason for separation and that triggers fact finding. You might need to provide documentation proving you were laid off.

•How would I check for a separation issue? I don't see anything obvious in my account.

•Look under 'Claim Status' or 'Issues' in your SAW account. If there's a separation issue it should show there, but sometimes it takes time to appear.

•Did they ever tell you what they were investigating or did it just randomly get approved?

•never found out exactly what they were checking but got approved eventually. keep filing your weekly claims though!

Make sure you're continuing to file your weekly claims even during fact finding. If you miss filing, it can cause additional delays when your claim gets approved. The weeks you don't file won't be paid retroactively.

•Yes I've been filing every week religiously. At least that part of the system seems to work properly.

•Good! That's the most important thing. I missed one week during my fact finding and it was a huge hassle to get that payment later.

Washington ESD fact finding can be triggered by several things: wage discrepancies, employment dates not matching, or if your employer reports different information than what you provided. They're basically double-checking everything before approving benefits.

•That makes sense. I guess I'll just have to be patient and keep waiting. Thanks for explaining what might be happening.

•Patience is hard when you need the money! I was in the same boat and ended up using Claimyr to finally talk to someone at Washington ESD. Worth every penny to get real answers instead of just guessing.

If it helps, most fact finding investigations do get resolved in favor of the claimant if you were legitimately laid off. The process is just slow because they have to verify everything with your employer.

•That's reassuring to hear. I'm definitely legitimate so hopefully it works out soon.

•Yeah most people do get approved eventually. It's just the waiting that kills you financially.

Keep an eye on your mail too. Sometimes Washington ESD sends paper letters about fact finding even if nothing shows up online. I almost missed an important request because I was only checking my online account.

•Good point! I'll make sure to check my mailbox carefully. Haven't gotten anything yet but maybe it's coming.

•Definitely check mail daily during fact finding. They use both online and paper notifications randomly.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but my fact finding took 8 weeks. Employer kept dragging their feet responding to Washington ESD's requests. Nothing you can do but wait unfortunately.

•Oh no, 8 weeks?? I really hope mine doesn't take that long. Did you get backpay for all those weeks once it was approved?

Liam Murphy
•Yes got backpay for every week I filed claims during the fact finding period. That was the silver lining I guess.

Try calling the Washington ESD customer service line early in the morning around 7:30 AM. Sometimes you can get through before the lines get too busy.

•I've tried calling at different times but always get the busy signal or get disconnected after waiting forever.

•The phone system is absolutely terrible. I had much better luck with that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. They actually got me through to a real person who could check my fact finding status.

My advice is don't stress too much about it. I know easier said than done when you need the money, but fact finding is pretty routine and most people get approved. Just keep filing your weekly claims and it'll work out.

•Thanks everyone for all the advice and reassurance. I feel a lot better knowing this is normal and that others have gone through the same thing successfully.

•You'll get through this! The waiting is the hardest part but Washington ESD does eventually get things sorted out.

I went through fact finding last year and it was nerve-wracking, but here's what I learned: the status usually means they're verifying information with your employer or checking wage records. The frustrating part is they don't always tell you upfront what they're investigating. In my case, it took about 4 weeks before I got a determination letter saying my benefits were approved. The key things are: keep filing your weekly claims (you'll get backpay if approved), check both your online account AND physical mail daily for any requests, and try not to panic - most legitimate claims do get approved eventually. I know the financial stress is real, but hang in there!
