NYDOL sent email about UI benefits I never applied for - identity theft concern?

I got an email saying I needed to finish filing my unemployment benefits, but I never applied for them. Then I got another email saying the first one was sent by mistake. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm worried about identity theft.

Yep, got the same thing. It's a mess-up by the Department of Labor. They sent out a mass email to the wrong list. Your identity is safe, just ignore the first email.

How can we be sure our identity is safe tho? šŸ¤” Government agencies aren't exactly known for their competence...

Fair point. But they explicitly stated in the follow-up that no identities were compromised. I think we're good.

lol government and competence in the same sentence 🤣

This is why I have trust issues with government agencies. How do they mess up something like this? šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø

I've been dealing with unemployment issues for months now, and let me tell you, this is just the tip of the iceberg. The whole system is a joke.

Exactly! And don't even get me started on their website. It's like it was designed in 1995 and never updated.

Hey guys, I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at the unemployment office. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

I know it sounds sketchy, but I swear it worked for me. Saved me hours of frustration.

$20 to talk to someone who should be available for free? This country is a joke 🤔

I get it, but when you're desperate and can't get through, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Here's what you need to know about this situation: • The New York State Department of Labor had a technical error on April 25 • They accidentally sent an email about unemployment insurance to the wrong mailing list • If you received this email and didn't apply for benefits, it was sent to you by mistake • Your identity has NOT been compromised • You can safely disregard the initial message • They've sent out a follow-up email explaining the error While it's concerning that such a mistake could happen, it's important to remember that errors can occur in any system. The quick follow-up and clear explanation from the Department of Labor is actually a good sign of their commitment to transparency. If you're still worried, you can always monitor your credit report for any suspicious activity, but in this case, it seems to be a simple (though widespread) clerical error.

Thanks for breaking it down like this. Really helpful! šŸ‘

Still doesn't excuse the fact that they messed up in the first place. What if this happens with our personal info next time?

That's a valid concern. It's always good to stay vigilant about our personal information, regardless of who's handling it.

Am I the only one who's more worried about how easy it seems to be to apply for unemployment in someone else's name? Like, what if someone actually did that to me?

Omg I didn't even think of that 😱 Now I'm paranoid

Chill, guys. There are verification processes in place. It's not that easy to commit fraud.
