NYDOL Email About Unemployment I Didn't Apply For - Identity Theft?
Hey everyone, I just got this weird email saying I need to finish filing for unemployment benefits, but I never even applied for them in the first place. Has anyone else dealt with this? I tried calling the Department of Labor to sort it out, but couldn't get through. Any advice on what I should do?

Oof, that sounds like a potential identity theft situation. You should definitely try to contact the DoL asap and maybe check your credit report too. Have you tried their online portal?

•Thanks for the heads up! I didn't even think about identity theft 😱 I'll def check my credit report. I tried the online portal but it was super confusing... guess I'll have to keep trying to call

•Yeah, identity theft is no joke. Make sure you freeze your credit too, just to be safe. Better safe than sorry!

•This happened to my cousin last year. Turned out someone used his info to file for benefits. Took him months to sort out. Good luck, OP!

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Sounds sketchy af. You sure this isn't a scam?

•Nah, it's legit. I was skeptical too but it actually worked for me. Saved me hours of hold time.

•20 bucks tho? That's steep just to make a phone call 🙄

•I get it, but tbh it was worth it for me. Time is money, ya know? 🤷♂️

The DoL system is such a joke rn. I've been trying to get through for weeks about my own issue. Feels like shouting into the void 🗣️🕳️

Here's what you need to do: 1. Document everything. Save that email, take screenshots. 2. Keep calling DoL. Try early morning or late afternoon, sometimes easier to get through. 3. Check your credit report at annualcreditreport.com (it's free) 4. File a police report for potential identity theft 5. Contact the FTC at IdentityTheft.gov 6. Freeze your credit with all three bureaus 7. Change passwords on your important accounts 8. Keep an eye out for any other suspicious activity It's a pain, but you gotta protect yourself. The system is overwhelmed rn, so you might have to be persistent. Good luck!

•This is solid advice. I'd add: set up credit monitoring if you can. Some banks offer it for free.

•Faxing? What year is it? 😂 But for real, I might try that if I can figure out how to send a fax in 2023 lmao

ugh, the DoL is such a mess these days. I've been in the same boat, trying to get through about my claim for weeks. Solidarity, friend. 🤜🤛

Plot twist: what if you actually did apply and just forgot? 🤔 Jk jk, but for real, check your email history just in case. Brains be weird sometimes.

This happened to my neighbor and it turned out his ex-wife had applied using his info. Any chance someone who has your personal details might've done this?

Pro tip: Try calling your local state representative's office. Sometimes they can help push things through with the DoL faster. Worth a shot!

•This! 👆 My rep's office was super helpful when I had issues last year. They have direct lines to DoL.
