NYDOL: What docs needed to finish unemployment claim over the phone?
Hey everyone, I just applied for unemployment and they told me to call the DOL to finish up. Has anyone gone through this process recently? What kind of documents do they usually ask for? I'm a bit nervous about the call and want to make sure I have everything ready.

Yeah, I went through this last month. They typically ask for your ID, recent pay stubs, and any paperwork about why you lost your job (like a layoff letter). Make sure you have those handy when you call!

ā¢This is super helpful, thanks! Do you remember how long the call took? I'm trying to plan my day around it.

ā¢No prob! My call took about 45 minutes, but I've heard it can vary. Better to set aside an hour or two just in case.

ā¢Have you guys tried calling right when they open? I heard that's the best time to get through.

Hey, I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

ā¢I get the skepticism, but it seriously worked for me. After days of trying, I was desperate. The $20 was worth it to finally get my claim sorted.

Pro tip: Write down all your employment info before you call. Dates, employer names, addresses, everything. They'll ask for it all and it's a pain if you're scrambling to find it during the call.

Anyone know if they're still doing those extra federal benefits? I heard those might be ending soon.

ā¢I think it depends on your state. Some have already cut them off, others are keeping them going. Check your state's DOL website for the most up-to-date info.

Here's a comprehensive list of what you'll likely need for your unemployment claim: ā¢ Government-issued ID (driver's license or passport) ā¢ Social Security card ā¢ Recent pay stubs (last 3 months if possible) ā¢ Employment termination letter or layoff notice ā¢ Bank account info for direct deposit ā¢ Work history for the last 18 months (employer names, addresses, dates of employment) ā¢ Reason for unemployment (be prepared to explain this) ā¢ If applicable: military discharge papers (DD-214) Also, make sure you have a pen and paper ready to jot down any case numbers or follow-up instructions they give you. And don't forget, be patient with the rep - they're dealing with a lot right now. Good luck with your claim!

ā¢This should be pinned at the top of the sub tbh. So many people asking the same questions over and over.

ā¢Quick question - what if you don't have a termination letter? My company just stopped scheduling me...

ā¢@profile16 In that case, bring any communication you have with your employer about reduced hours or lack of work. Even emails or texts can help. If you have nothing, just be prepared to explain the situation in detail.

ā¢Totally agree. It's almost like they hope people will just give up and not claim what they're entitled to.
