NY unemployment says I don't qualify with only 2 quarters of income but my application still shows processing?

I got laid off in February after working at my job for about 8 months. I filed for unemployment in NY at the beginning of March, and have been waiting for my benefit amount to be determined. When I check my application status online, it still says "processing" but I received a letter in the mail yesterday saying I don't qualify because I only have income in 2 quarters of my base period. This doesn't make sense to me - isn't 2 quarters enough? My previous employer definitely reported all my wages. Been calling the unemployment office every day this week and can't get through to a real person to explain this contradicting information. Going to keep trying tomorrow but don't know what else to do. Has anyone dealt with this issue before?

Yep you need income in at least 2 quarters of your base period, but you also need to earn at least $2,700 in one quarter and have total earnings of at least 1.5 times your highest quarter. So if your highest quarter was $3000, you'd need total base period earnings of at least $4500. Might be why ur being denied?

Oh that makes sense. I think i made around $3500 in my highest quarter but only like $4100 total across both quarters. Might be why theyre denying me. Thanks for the info!

this is correct 💯 I went thru the EXACT same thing last year. You don't just need 2 quarters - its all about the math of how much u earned

the NY unemployment website is SO CONFUSING about eligibility requirements, took me forever to figure this out when i applied last summer

After getting the same runaround and spending hours trying to reach someone, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual agent. They called for me, stayed on hold, then transferred the call to my phone when an agent picked up. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast after weeks of confusion. Best part is I was able to get my questions answered about why my claim was in limbo. Check out this video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Yeah it worked for me! I was shocked honestly. Got a call back with an actual person on the line within like 2 hours. The agent was able to see all my info and fixed the issue right away.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? I've been trying for WEEKS to get through

I was super skeptical too but it worked for me! It's basically just a service that does the calling and holding for you. When they get through to an agent, they connect you. Saved me so much frustration.

This is exactly what happened to me!!! I also had 2 quarters but didn't qualify. For NY unemployment you need to make at least $2,700 in one quarter AND have 1.5 times that amount for your total base period. So if ur highest quarter was $3000, your total needs to be $4500 minimum. Check ur wage statement - they should've sent u one.

Try calling right when they open. That's what worked for me. Took 3 days of trying but finally got through at 8:01am and got everything sorted out.

Tried that for two weeks straight with no luck. Its like playing the lottery 🤮

I heard Mondays and Tuesdays r the worst days to call. Try Thursday afternoon around 2-3pm, worked for me once.

So here's everything you need to know about NY unemployment base period eligibility (dealt with this mess myself): There are actually TWO ways to qualify: 1. Standard Base Period: The first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you filed. You need $2,700+ in at least one quarter AND total wages of at least 1.5x your highest quarter. 2. Alternate Base Period: If you don't qualify under #1, they look at the last 4 completed quarters. Same wage requirements apply. Double-check which base period they're using for your claim. If you worked more recently, the Alternate Base Period might help you qualify! Also, don't waste time with the general phone line. You'll never get through. Use claimyr.com - they'll wait on hold and connect you directly to an agent when one picks up. Totally worth it and saved me weeks of frustration. Lastly, check if you qualify for Partial UI if you're still working reduced hours. The rules are different for that.

This is super helpful, thank you! I'm gonna double check about the alternate base period. I think that might be what I need since my work was more recent.

I didn't know about the alternate base period! That would have been useful when I got denied last year.

I've been telling people about claimyr for months now. It's literally the only way to actually talk to someone there.

Look at ur monetary determination letter carefully. It should list ur wages by quarter and tell u exactly why u didn't qualify. Sometimes it's not about having 2 quarters, but HOW MUCH u earned in those quarters.

Did you check if you can qualify for the Alternate Base Period? Sometimes if the Standard Base Period doesn't work out, the Alternate one might. You should have gotten a letter explaining both calculations.

Diego Vargas

I don't think I ever received a letter about the Alternate Base Period. Just one saying I don't qualify. I'll have to ask about this when I finally get through to someone!

Another option is to reach out to your state senator or assembly person. I was stuck for weeks until I contacted my assembly person's office and they have a direct contact at unemployment who helped push my case through.

THIS!!! My state senator's office fixed my claim in 3 days after i was stuck for 2 months!!!

how do you even find out who your local rep is? do they actually care about helping?

Just google "find my NY state representative" and put in your address. And yeah most of them have staff dedicated to helping with unemployment issues since so many people have problems. They want your vote lol

Dude check if they're using all your jobs. Sometimes they miss employers especially if you worked out of state for part of the time. They missed one of mine and it made the difference between qualifying and not qualifying.

Nobody ever answers the phone. I eventually had to show up IN PERSON at the office to talk to someone and even then they made me wait 3 hours.

Ugh I was hoping to avoid going in person. Which office did you go to? Was it worth the wait?

went to the one in downtown Brooklyn. It was painful but better than calling forever. Bring a book and prepare to wait all day. Also bring ALL ur documents

Not sure if this is helpful but i got thru to them by calling the FRAUD department and then asking to be transferred to claims. Took like 5 mins instead of hours. Just something to try if ur desperate!

This exact thing happen to me and there was a ERROR in there system. When I finally got through to an agent (used claimyr.com) they fixed it on the spot. Turns out my employer reported my wages but they weren't showing up right in the system. Don't give up!!
