NY unemployment denied for only having 2 quarters of income - application still says processing
I'm confused about the quarter requirements for NY unemployment. They denied me saying I don't qualify because I only have income in 2 quarters, but my online application still shows 'processing' for my benefit amount. Does anyone know if 2 quarters is actually enough? The website is super confusing about this. I've been trying to call all day today to get this straightened out but can't get through to anyone. Will try again tmm but really need to know if I'm wasting my time or if there's still a chance I qualify.

In New York, you typically need wages in at least two quarters of your base period, but there are other requirements too. You need to have earned at least $2,900 in one quarter, and your total base period wages must be at least 1.5 times your high quarter wages. For example, if your highest quarter was $3,000, your total base period wages would need to be at least $4,500 to qualify. If your application says "processing," it might mean they're still calculating your benefit amount, or there could be a system lag in updating your status. Did you receive an official determination letter stating you were denied?

•Thanks for explaining! I got an email saying I don't qualify but nothing in the mail yet. My highest quarter was about $4,200 and my total for the two quarters was around $7,100 so I should meet that 1.5x requirement right? Maybe I should wait for the official letter before panicking?

The system is super confusing!! I had the EXACT same thing happen to me in January. Online said processing but I got denied. Spent DAYS trying to reach someone. After trying to call for literally a week straight with no luck, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Turns out there was a mistake with how my employer reported my wages. The unemployment agent was able to fix it right there on the phone and I was approved two days later. Definitely worth reaching a human to get a clear answer.

•Yes, it honestly did. I was skeptical at first but I was desperate after a week of trying. The agent I spoke with explained exactly why I was being denied and fixed the issue.

You DO need wages in at least 2 quarters but there's MORE to it than that!!! The system is RIGGED to make it confusing. They WANT to deny you. I was denied because of "insufficient wages" even though I worked the WHOLE YEAR. Found out they weren't counting my 1099 income, only my W2!!! The rules are different depending on what KIND of income you have. Do you have both types????

•No, I just had W2 income from one job for those 2 quarters. They laid us off when the company restructured. I'm thinking maybe they made a mistake when reviewing my application? I really hope I can get through to someone who can explain what's going on.

Based on what you shared, if you earned $4,200 in your high quarter and $7,100 total across two quarters, you should meet the monetary requirements for NY unemployment. The system might show processing while waiting for employer verification or there might be a non-monetary issue unrelated to your quarters of work. Specifically check if: 1. Your reason for separation qualifies (layoff does qualify) 2. You've completed all identity verification steps 3. There are no issues with your work authorization Definitely keep calling, and try right when they open at 8am. That's usually the best time to get through.

•Thank you so much for this detailed info! I'll check those things. My separation was definitely a layoff, and I uploaded my ID documents when I applied. I'll try calling at 8am tomorrow!

•Omg I'm not even sure which base period I selected! I just followed the online application steps. Could this be the problem? Did you have to call to fix it or could you do it online?

I'm having the exact same issue right now! Been trying to call since Monday. When I check my payment history it says $0 even though I've been certifying weekly. I'm so confused and worried about paying rent next month. Did anyone who had this problem eventually get approved? How long did it take? I keep stressing about this every night...

•The payment history will show $0 until your claim is fully processed and approved. If your monetary determination is still pending, that's normal. Make sure you keep certifying weekly even while waiting for a determination - you'll get retroactive payments for those weeks if approved. Don't stop certifying!

Update us when you get through to someone! The online system status and the actual determination sometimes contradict each other during processing. Also, check your spam/junk folders for any official communications that might have been filtered out. The official determination letter will explain exactly why you were denied if that's truly the case.

•Good idea about checking spam! I'll let you all know what happens. I'm going to try that 8am call trick tomorrow and if that doesn't work maybe try that service someone mentioned above. Just need to get this resolved before my bills come due next month.

Has anyone here ever successfully appealed a denial? I'm wondering if that's what I'll need to do next if I can't get through on the phone. Is there a specific form or process for that in NY?

•Yes, you can request a hearing to appeal a denial. You have 30 days from the date on your determination letter to request an appeal. The form is online in your NY.gov account under "Forms and Documents" or you can call and request one. Make sure to have documentation ready that supports your case - pay stubs, employment dates, etc. The hearing is usually done by phone with an administrative law judge.

UPDATE: Finally got through this morning! Called right at 8am and only waited about 25 minutes. The agent said they were using my wrong base period and that I DO qualify! She fixed it right there and said I should see my determination update in 2-3 business days. So relieved! Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions.

•That's great news! This is exactly why speaking to an actual person is so important with these issues. Glad you got it sorted out!
