NY unemployment impact on 2020 recovery rebate credit from Social Security letter - confused!
Just got this weird letter from Social Security Administration about economic impact payments and refundable tax credits. The letter mentions 2020 recovery rebate credit and says if I filed a tax return for 2020, I don't need to do anything else. Does this mean I'm getting a check?? I'm confused because I was on NY unemployment for most of 2020 and already got stimulus payments back then. Is this related to my unemployment benefits somehow? Has anyone else gotten something like this? I'd call SSA but their wait times are ridiculous.

These letters are going out to clear up confusion from 2020. If you already received all your stimulus payments (the 1st was $1,200, 2nd was $600), then you won't get another check. The letter is just confirming you don't need to do anything else. It's not related to your NY unemployment benefits directly.

•Thanks for explaining! I did get those payments, so I guess nothing's coming. Just weird they're sending this out in 2025 for something from 2020? And why would Social Security be sending it instead of IRS?

•Your son is right. It's just documentation they're required to send. No new money coming from this letter.

This is a perfect example of government agencies not communicating with each other. The SSA is sending these out as part of an audit reconciliation process for their internal records. The IRS and SSA databases often don't match perfectly, and this is their attempt to clean things up. You won't get any additional payment if you already received your stimulus checks back in 2020-2021. The confusing part is that they're doing this cleanup so late! But government agencies work at their own pace...

•Classic government inefficiency! I've been fighting with NY unemployment for weeks trying to get someone on the phone about my claim issue. Every time I call I get disconnected or wait for hours. This stuff makes me so mad!!!

•For anyone struggling to reach a NY unemployment agent, I recently discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it was a game-changer. I was in the same boat - couldn't get through for 3 weeks about my backdated claim issue. Their service got me connected to an agent in under 30 minutes when I'd been trying for days. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - saved me so much frustration.

Don't trust these letters!!!!! The government is just trying to collect more data on people. I got a similar letter last month and when I called they asked for all kinds of personal info. My friend said it's part of a new data collection program they're doing. BE CAREFUL!

•This is incorrect information. The letter is legitimate and part of standard government accounting procedures. The SSA is not using this as a data collection scheme. They already have the information being referenced in the letter.

•This letter is specifically about the 2020 recovery rebate credits (stimulus payments) and has nothing to do with unemployment benefits directly. If you were on unemployment in 2021 but not 2020, this particular letter probably isn't relevant to you, but you might receive something similar for the 2021 tax year eventually.

Update: I finally got through to someone at the Social Security office. They said this letter is just a formality and I won't be getting any additional payment since I already received all my stimulus payments back in 2020/2021. They're just cleaning up their records. So false alarm! Thanks everyone for your help!

My sister got this too and she wasn't even on unemployment! So weird how they're sending these now. Totally unrelated but does anyone know if they're extending NY unemployment benefits again this year? My benefits are almost up and I'm getting nervous...

•That's a completely different topic that would need its own thread, but briefly: NY hasn't announced any benefit extensions for 2025 beyond the standard 26 weeks. You might want to check if you qualify for the Extended Benefits program if you've exhausted regular UI.
